Re: What were your TOP 5 MOVIES of 2013?

Just saw HER today as well.  It's a well-made unique piece of work, and like every other Jonze movie it left me feeling weird and sad.  Probably why I've never watched any Jonze movie more than once.

But if I were to make a Weirdest and Saddest of 2013 list, it'd be #1.  And #4.

I know several people who thought they had their best-of list all sorted out--and then they saw HER. I've seen it twice already. It's a good one, friends.

I wish I lived in or near one of the five cities in America that's playing it. It's not going into wide release until the 10th of January. So I can't really put it on my list after I see it, even though I think it would probably make it on there.

Re: What were your TOP 5 MOVIES of 2013?

Now that we've posted our top #5 of the year, where does 2013 itself rank? One year's top #5 could be another year's discount bin.

Will any of this year's best stand the test of time and have high re-watchability, like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, Matrix, Aliens, Lord of the Rings, Dark Knight, et al?

I'd argue that even Gravity, which looks jaw-droppingly awesome in IMAX 3D is not going to be re-watched much because it'll suffer on a smartphone, pad, laptop screen, or even a 55" home theatre system. The story is too weak on its own.

In other words, compared to previous years. 2013 has been a bit bland. And 2014 shapes up to be a repeat. 2015 shows promise.

I thought that 2013 was a fantastic year. Compared to last year, which was mostly lame, the past 12 months were jam-packed with fantastic movies.

Re: What were your TOP 5 MOVIES of 2013?

I thought it was pretty shit. Or at least, nearly all the blockbusters were either shit or disappointing. Up until November I'd have had a real tough time even coming up with 5 movies to fill out a top 5 list. There's been enough good stuff backloaded (and a few smaller gems earlier in the year) that it isn't a total wash, but I thought it was pretty poor on the whole.

I can name twenty FANTASTIC movies I saw this year, and less than ten truly awful ones. If you're only looking at blockbusters, then yeah, it wasn't a great year. But those are rarely the best movies of the year, and they're not going to 100% define 2013 when we look back on it.

I'm gonna have a hard time swallowing all those Bible adaptations coming our way in 2014. It'll be depressing if they become huge hits like Passion of the Christ - in which case, we'll get loads of them until they've exhausted every story. Or they could bomb bigtime, and return to their straight-to-video Christian TV niche market.
With Christianity on the wane in the west (even in the USA), it'll be interesting to see the domestic/foreign box-office comparisons.

Re: What were your TOP 5 MOVIES of 2013?

I am not looking forward to Noah or whatever other adaptations are coming out. I was disappointed with whatever Noah miniseries happened on ABC years ago and really don't see the need for Aronofsky (of all people!) to be doing this project.

And this is coming as someone who was impressed by Passion of the Christ and enjoys DeMille's "The Ten Commandments" at Easter time.

I see it as being a "Last Temptation of Christ" situation, where the Church will be split over it, and people will go seek because of the controversy. Lather, rinse repeat *sigh*

yeah, I'm with you on Noah fireproof.  That movie doesn't look interesting to me.  But I thought that that was the only biblical adaptation out in 2014...?

Re: What were your TOP 5 MOVIES of 2013?

Ridley Scott has Exodus, his Moses movie with Christian Bale that's filming right now.
I actually really like Prince of Egypt, so of the two, I'd probably be far more likely to enjoy Exodus.

Noah's ark has always been one of the dumbest stories in the bible, and I don't get why they keep trying to adapt it. That does not work in film form, I'm sorry.

6. Armed. Angels. Guys.

Seriously, 6 of em. You can't ignore that.

/Yeah, not really interested, I'll be really curious to see how he visualizes things (And from the looks of things so far, it's going to be a really pretty movie that way), but as a story/movie, not really interested.

And we gotta endure discussion of Mary Mother of Christ in 2014 as well as Exodus. Only a matter of time before Apostles versus Zombies gets greenlit.

Re: What were your TOP 5 MOVIES of 2013?

I always have two top five lists. The first one is my personal favorites, geeking out included, that I've spent the most time thinking about since viewing them. The second list are the actual best cinematic experiences of the year. These are the ones that get me excited as a filmmaker. That's still subjective, of course, but there's a little less 'omg Superman's so cool' involved in the decisions.

So, of what I saw this year, which is not nearly as much as I'd intended to, my personal faves:

5) Ender's Game
4) The Wolverine
3) Oblivion
2) Catching Fire
1) Man of Steel

I'm honestly not prepared to make the second list because I saw so few of the films I think would deserve to be on it. Gravity and Oblivion, for sure. Probably American Hustle, too. Side Effects.
Eh, that's almost five. I'd probably say The Great Gatsby if they'd cast anyone but Tobey Maguire. That just totally killed the mood for me, IIRC everything else was superb.

Eh. Saw a lot of movies this year. Didn't really love many. Had to look at the wiki for 2013 to remember 'em all.

Here, this is easier. This is all the movies I particularly liked this year, listed least to most. And it's exactly ten. I'm as surprised as you are.

Nebraska
White House Down
The World's End
Blackfish
This Is The End
Gravity
Monsters University
Captain Phillips
The Wolf of Wall Street
Sound City

Still haven't seen Her, though.

I've seen JESUS CHRIST VAMPIRE HUNTER. Doesn't quite breach the "so bad it's good" threshold. Pretty much just bad.

So Sound City takes it.

There's also SON OF GOD, coming to the big screen in February, produced by the people who did the Bible series on the History channel. It covers Jesus' life. Looks to be quite the cheesefest though, and Diogo Morgado as Jesus is looking even prettier than Jim Caviezel. Also the VFX look comparable to the ones I just saw in the LEGEND OF HERCULES trailer. It probably won't draw much interest outside the Christian community.

Oh come on now film-makers of Son Of God, nobody back then was that pretty, regardless of who their father is! big_smile
