Makes sense. If the show is good, and properly advertised, people are going to watch it no matter when it starts
Well, not necessarily. Just like with films, something can be great but just not what people want to watch at the moment. It's also much easier to not see any ads for a new show if it's not on a network you usually watch. I wish them well, but once Football season is over I won't be watching FOX until fall so doubt I'll catch any great shows they premier then

That's true. But pilot season is somewhat arbitrary, and it makes more sense to air a show when it's most likely that people will watch that show instead of lumping it in with dozens of other new shows and hoping people choose to watch it. A lot of the time, that might be pilot season. But it makes sense not to do that for all shows.
Meh. It seems to me that the pilot season gets a lot of free advertising. Cable shows don't benefit from that and so have to create their own buzz, which I suspect is pretty expensive.
But I fully agree that pilots shouldn't be rushed. That's just dumb.
I'm all for this. An early example of this (also pioneered by Fox) was Summer programming. While everyone else was in reruns, Fox was putting out new content during the Summer months (The OC, Glee). Not only did it bring strong ratings, it gave critics something to rave about because there was nothing else to watch or rave about, so no competition, at the time. I also liked it because the 3 months within Summer allowed for a straight run of all new episodes. This often worked well for mid-season replacements with 13-episode orders as well (Buffy the Vampire Slayer premiered in March, allowing for the first season to finish in May so the next batch would be ready to go in the Fall).
