I just watched this thing and loved it. I'd heard of it but thought it just showed landmarks around LA that appeared in movies. It does but is much more interesting than just that would've been. It's surprisingly long at 2hrs49min but it isn't too long.

It's almost all clips from movies. To me the narrator, who reads the filmmaker's words but is an actor, sounds a little like Mr Plinkett but i got used to it. The first hour is fast paced then later spends more time on aspects of certain movies. The tone is straightforward in the beginning, sometimes humourous in the middle (the Dragnet stuff is really funny) and serious at the end.

I read up a little and it turns out it was never released theatrically or on video because he couldn't get permission to use all the clips! It made me want to check out about 15 movies i've never seen.
