I'd just like to clarify a point in my own point of view. I don't believe religion is required to temper "baser instincts", or any other formalised structure for that matter. Empathy alone will pretty much do it.

Agreed.  I did not mean to imply that religion was required to temper baser instincts; obviously plenty of us are able to control ourselves perfectly well without it.  Besides we've developed ideas like ethics and we have a legal code these days.  Pretty much any religion though will have some form of guidelines to live by, including ones which govern how we should behave, with whom and why we can have sex, and what we can (or cannot) eat.

It's no different than laws we have in place today for such things, the only difference is that killing a guy not only gets you a prison sentence, but in trouble with your deity.

Imagine you're living in an age where there are no real societies, no government to keep the people in check.  They're running around killing, fucking and stealing from whomever they want.  Introduce the promise of salvation in the afterlife by following a moral code carved in stone and supposedly handed down from the deity offering said salvation, and eventually folks will start behaving themselves.

I'll admit I'm a little rusty on the story of the 10 Commandments, but I think that's the gist of it.

Re: Legion

The interesting thing is, the idea of an afterlife really came late. Originally, you worshiped gods so they wouldn't kill you. Add the fact the local King/Pharaoh said THEY were god, and you had a real, practical reason to sacrifice that goat that had nothing to do with imaginary friends.

Christopher Hitchens actually makes the opposite point when people claim humans need God's law to keep them in line: human civilization was around for thousands of years before the Ten Commandments were ever written down, do you really think it somehow survived all that time with everyone wildly killing, fucking, and robbing each other, and never thinking better of it until some Authority handed down a pithy set of rules?

We humans -- those of us without significant developmental disorders, at least -- do have an innate sense of correct behavior that doesn't have to be told to us. Cooperative behavior to some degree is hardwired into us by selective breeding, the same way that many breeds of dog are hardwired to be loyal and protective of humans. In our wild past, humans survived better in groups than alone. People who couldn't play nice in groups passed on fewer of their genes than those that could, and it's only very recently, all things considered, that we moved out of that environment. Not nearly long enough for behavioral evolution to have taken us noticeably in any other direction (American Conservatives to the contrary).

Over a period of about 150,000 years, without having any idea we were doing it, we basically domesticated ourselves.

Re: Legion

Let's not disparage the work of the Catholic church in civilizing Europe. Do you really think the Vikings or the Celts would ever have settled down and become peace/drink-loving Scandinavians and Irish if it weren't for Christianity?

The Irish would be painting themselves up and fighting naked TODAY if they didn't fear Old Scratch.

Re: Legion

Thanks for this one, I tried to watch this movie on the plane (I watch a lot of movies on long haul flights) and fell asleep.

From a casting perspective, I'm wondering if anyone here has watched Friday Night Lights?  Because Adrienne Palicki, who plays the pregnant whore in Legion, was awesome in that - and she played a lot of scenes opposite Taylor Kitsch and he was actually great in that too.

And the slack-jawed guy in Legion is Lucas Black, who started out as a kid actor in Sling Blade, and the TV series American Gothic, which was kind of an awesome show, and also starred Gary Cole and Sarah Paulson. (Which meant I was probably one of the few people who recognised her when she showed up in Serenity.)

Re: Legion

Just in case anyone missed this bit o' news, Legion has been adapted into a Syfy series called Dominion which premiered last night in the US.

Reviews have been mixed, but this thrashing from The Hollywood Reporter is pretty hilarious.
