Dang, I can't be there for Shaun of the Dead.
My favorite zombie movie.
EVAR
Shaun of the Dead should be good, I think it's pretty much a perfect movie, and Edgar Wright's best work (Hot Fuzz is all over the place, with a few brilliant moments, and DIF have already pointed out all the flaws with Scott Pilgrim).
Planet Terror I have no love for though. I kind of hate this entire wave of "fake" grindhouse movies, full of shitty green-screen and cgi bullshit and purposefully winking all over themselves.
I vastly prefer Death Proof, which while flawed, feels like an actual movie from the time period (bad pacing and all) and that has characters and a point. You can have a crazy movie that goes all over the place, but the characters have to feel like they believe in the universe they exist in (perfect example being Big Trouble in Little China), and not like actors having fun winking at the camera.
Honestly, I kind of feel like El Mariachi and Desperado were flukes, cause I've pretty much totally disliked everything Rodriguez has done since then (except for From Dusk Till Dawn, and Tarantino's half of that movie is vastly better than Rodriguez's). For a guy that's all about old school genre movies, he uses green-screens and CGI almost as much as George Lucas.
Ooh, a double bill of zombie movies just when I'm in a major zombie mood? Perfect!
Being a jet-set International Businessman, I regularly need to know what time it is around the world. It occurs to me that this might be useful to others in this forum for the purposes of joining the live sessions and so on.
It has 9 time zones (E Oz; Pacific, Mountain, Central, Eastern; UK and W Eu; India; Japan). And it has four pages: summer and winter in 12hr and 24hr clocks.

Shaun of the Dead and Planet Terror were fun. Thanks, panel, and thanks, chat room!
I can't believe I missed this, Shaun of the Dead is one of my favorite movies.
A bit wonky in places, but when the discussion would get back on point, it resulted in some fun, interesting conversation. Nice work, DiF and guest.
I wanted to bring that up, especially because of your comments in the chat, which didn't go unnoticed. (That all sounds more ominous than I mean, I'm just saying I wanted to hash that out with you because I was a seein' what you were a sayin.')
I might have the wrong brain in my head for what we should call a commentary, but they've never really been...commentary-commentaries, in my mind, they've never been truly meant to be listened along with the movie. At least not for a while, not since the early teen episodes, where we learned nobody actually did that. It's been conversation on a theme - the movie of the week - and usually tangents on that theme as well. So when we go off on a conversation about what Planet Terror is and how it succeeds, and what Death Proof is and how it does or doesn't, that seems to me just as interesting and related, and not to mention semi-required context building for other comments we'll make about the movie itself.
Now, if this was a commentary-commentary, that kind of thing would be ridiculous, but as the show is almost always a podcast for 99% of the audience, it works for me and I let it go that way if the tangent is interesting. Theory talk, abstract talk, what IS Planet Terror DOING, and what else has done that.
I guess me question is...no? Not this? In your opinion?
If I did get what Teague was saying ( I am so tired) I must agree with him. The fact that there is no restriction on the commentary or podcast is huge asset. Those official commentaries which are cut when someone say something what the production company doesn't like, are pointless. I like the fact that if Trey knows someone on the movie, he can without restrictions talk about the person in other projects. First you hear great stories and second you learn something.
Teagues Planet Terror example is excellent.
Planet Terror doesn't really lend itself to a lot of scene-by-scene analysis—which is probably why no one has ever done a commentary for it before. But I watch the movie with nearly every commentary I listen to, and I want to hear mostly about that movie. DIF is very good at not straying too far from that.
There was a part in the middle of this one where I was agreeing with John that the panel hadn't actually talked about the movie for a long stretch, but it was in the middle where not much was going on but monster-fighting.
EDIT...

Right. That's great stuff. For me, there was just more rambling about Tarantino and such than seemed relevant. Again, this is not the best movie to use as an example, because I certainly wouldn't have much to say about what was going on in each scene.

Anything on what's going on this weekend? I finally have a Saturday off from work and want, want, want to get back in the chatrooms again!
Preferably on a movie I've seen, but hey, I'm not picky. I still says you blokes need to do Top Gun.

I get what you're saying. Don't get me wrong, the discussion was still good, just misplaced, let's say. During the Tarantino and Death Proof talk, I kept thinking, "Gosh, this is great stuff, but it would make a hell of a lot more sense to be going on DURING Death Proof." When you guys get around to Death Proof, now my concern is going to be for repetition and redundancy, like, "They said all of this already, during that other movie that isn't this one."
And then of course there's the talk about the Western genre and various movies in it, which for me felt more appropriate for an Intermission podcast, or an actual Western movie, but I digress. Just like Zarban, I also try to watch the movie while listening to the commentary, save for a few exceptions (Phantom Menace, Hook, Monster's Inc., Galaxy Quest, The Princess Bride, Wanted, Harry Potter and A Few Good Men). Given that a movie only runs for so long and certain scenes play out that warrants discussion (which serves to justify watching the movie while you're talking), time is of the essence. I mean, if it's just going to be more of a theme-based discussion and less scene-specific, then why do a running commentary at all? Why not just do a casual, weekly movie review show?

All this is to say I ultimately enjoyed the episode. It's not like I'm saying it should be scrapped and redone. Not at all. I just personally prefer commentaries to have more focus on the material that's being viewed.
I'm going to agree with John on this one, sometimes I really want to learn your thoughts on a movie but then the commentary seems to talk more around the movie than about it. I find this tends to happen more on the good movies - when it's not so good it ends up being a discussion on the merits of the movie and so is more on topic. For example, I think your commentaries for the prequels are much better than those of the original trilogy.
Weird, I feel the opposite generally in response to both of y'all.
For the most part, when an off topic conversation is happening, it's our way of keeping a conversation going when we don't have anything to say about the movie at that particular point.
And when we try to stay on topic with the movie and not let conversations wander, other listeners complain because we're stifling interesting conversation that they want to hear more about.
For my part, I think it's usually ideal to bring the conversation back to the film, if there's something to be said in particular about that film at that moment; but at the same time we've all been trying lately not to interrupt each other as much as before because folks in the forum were complaining about that, too.
For the record, I think that "on topic" includes (highest to lowest relevancy):
This scene
This movie (and the techniques used to make it)
These actors (and their other movies)
This director (and his or her other movies)
Other movies otherwise related
Explaining the plot to Teague
Whatever movie story occurs to Trey
Brian's definition of "acting"
Star Wars and Star Trek
Jeff Goldblum
GREAT SCOT! I've just thought of a DIF bingo game!

Brian's definition of "acting"
Brian repeatably creates sentences in the form of: "Movie making* is just [blank]."
If someone** were to hunt through the archives, you can find 5 or 6 of these.

Bingo is for old people. How about a drinking game?
Every time he mentions Star Trek* or how awesome Howard the Duck is, everyone drinks.

**not me
***seriously? star trek? really?

There's one that Dorkman says a lot, "it's the sort of thing where." Usually followed by "like," usually followed by something about pedophilia.
Yeah, go ahead. Take a shot every time I say it. I dare you.

This one time, I was in a fire with both hands up an actress's dress... nah, I should wait until we do that movie.

I hate you so much when you do that. Especially because half the time, when you do do that movie, you don't tell the story.
Any word on what the movie of the week or rather weekend will be, if any at all
