Topic: Announcement! Things!

Hey guys. First, if you haven't heard it, here's an audio summary of this thingy. Anyway.

In just a few weeks we'll be celebrating the third anniversary of Down in Front. Since March 2009 we've put out a movie commentary every week (except for one, shut up), and gotten a great community going here at the forums, as well as some great regular participation in the live chatroom during recordings. Earlier this year we started doing another show, The Intermission, a more free-form discussion show about TV, movies, and anything that interests us that week.

Over the last few years of producing the show, it's been gratifying to see the community and fanbase develop and to start seeing comments on Twitter and elsewhere, when a new film releases, that they're looking forward to seeing what we may have to say about it. It's also been frustrating to have to wait for such films to come out on video, months later...or to have comments and opinions to offer, but not enough to fill an entire running commentary.

So we're really excited to announce that as of our third anniversary, moving into year four of Down in Front, we'll be shifting our focus primarily to the discussion format we introduced as the Intermission, but much expanded. Along with the discussion of various film and TV topics - many of them suggested by our forum community (seriously, sign up) - we also plan to experiment with other content such as, well, effing movie reviews, both for new releases in theaters, and classic films that we'd love to talk about but just wouldn't be able to sustain an entire commentary. Dissection and analysis style, of course. Its our thing.

And what about the commentaries? We know that there will always be plenty of films begging to be praised or belittled for their entire running length, and we will continue doing commentaries for films that demand them. Moving into year four, the commentaries will just be less frequent than the weekly schedule we've had.

Leading up to the anniversary on DATE CHANGED: MARCH 10TH, we will continue to be doing weekly live recordings of some of our most-anticipated and in-demand films, culminating in a live marathon recording of the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy. And yes, it'll be the extended editions. It's going to be a party and you won't want to miss it, so save the date and plan to pop in at some point in the chat to say hi! More details in the weeks to come.

Whether in the form of a running commentary for a film, or the looser discussion format, Down in Front will continue to be a weekly podcast devoted to discussing the movies you love, hate, love to hate and hate to love with the friends in your head. It's been a great ride with all of you, and we're just getting started.

So, questions? Ideas? Suggestions for the epic movies?

Sounds awesome to me! If anything, I think this would make DIF more accessible to newcomers.

Re: Announcement! Things!

YES!!!! I've been hoping you guys would shift to this kind of format for awhile now, the Intermission seemed like a really cool step in that direction. Really excited to hear you're doing this, I really think you guys can compete with and do a better weekly show than FilmJunk and SlashfilmCast. Also that LOTR cast sounds amazing, I've actually never watched the extended editions (and recently bought the blu-ray set), so I'll really have to hurry up and watch them now.

Trey killed a guy?

Anyway for commentaries I would appreciate to see done include Clockwork Orange, Escape from New York and the gruesome 1986 blood bath Transformers The Movie... Predator would also be nice if there's time.

This is still up in the air, but the most likely answer is yes.

Re: Announcement! Things!

I would suggest a Wes Anderson commentary. I've always liked the textures, soundtrack and film, of The Darjeeling Limited. It almost seems like a sequel to The Royal Tennenbaums (sp?), but with a slightly different family.

Re: Announcement! Things!

I'd like to offer one quick correction to my lovable Teague. I will not primarily be making LOTR themed mixed drinks for 10 hours straight.  This is for two reasons: 1) If I stuff 12 people full of booze for 10 hours straight, I will be charged with multiple homicides and 2) I don't make mix drinks very well.

What I offered was to make LOTR themed FOOD for the entire time.  Mainly because I didn't think it would be good to have multiple people making Sharkey's and 7-11 runs throughout our commentary, but also because I love to cook, have been told I'm decent at it, and thought it would be fun to provide snacks that sort of go along with the movies.  I've already started putting the menu together and I'll offer these previews.

Bilbo's Cheese and Eggs
Sam's PO-TA-TOES
Riverfolk Baked Clams Casino
Blackened Balrog Beef Skewers
Gollum's (forgot the taste of) Bread

I think we got tripped up because I suggested that your roommate Jessica, who makes her own Micro Brews, might be persuaded to mix up a custom batch if possible.

Too much garbage in your face?  There's plenty of space in space!

Re: Announcement! Things!

Oh yeah. I'm thinking, unless someone objects, that all three commentaries come out on the same day. But yes, these will be official Down in Front commentaries, in addition to the massive livestreaming party event.

Smash the bottles and burn the corks!
Eddie's making food for dorks!

Actually, this sounds fun.  I may have to bring a dish myself..... maybe Gimli's Malt Beerrrrrr and Red Meat Off The Bone...

Re: Announcement! Things!

I'm psyched as all hell.

Also, we've moved the date to Saturday, instead of Sunday. This way the other-side-of-the-world people have a better ability to stay up late, or wake up early and nap later, if so inclined...and we have a day to recover before going back to work.

Re: Announcement! Things!

Slight changes:

Balrog Burgers now, blackened by shadow and flame.
Bilbo's Cheese and Eggs will also come with a side of butter scraped over too much toast.

And although I will do my prep work at home, I plan to make most of this at the DiF kitchen.

Re: Announcement! Things!

Very excited about the LotR commentaries!

And I'm really happy you moved it to March 10 and not the eleventh, because that would probably have been the least convenient day for me this entire year. So thanks for making me much happier than I was when I first saw this announcement a few hours ago.

In other news: I haven't listened to a commentary in months, I should probably do something about that soon...
