Keeping in mnind that I know next to nothing about Dune (I mean, I got the uber basics, but yeah). Dorkmans point wasn't that you need to reinvent it to add variation. It was that you need to reinvent it to be something we haven't seen before. And if you can do that then that will be able to hook you and the solid story and character would take you the rest of the way.
rtambree: that thinking kinda seems like the COMPLETE wrong way to rethink it. "Well obviously our audience is a bunch of idiots, so bleh PRETTY LANDSCAPES, there that'll make em happy."
It's funny you mention both Lotr and Avatar. For LOTR, at least for me, the landscape always takes a backseat to the characters. The landscape is just the canvas for the characters to paint thier story accross. Whereas Avtar is AAAAALLLL about the pretty colors. The characters are just there to give Cameron an excuse to show us this world.
And frankly I would LOVE to stare at this for 2 hours:
