Re: Dune - Because it's awesome!

Keeping in mnind that I know next to nothing about Dune (I mean, I got the uber basics, but yeah). Dorkmans point wasn't that you need to reinvent it to add variation. It was that you need to reinvent it to be something we haven't seen before. And if you can do that then that will be able to hook you and the solid story and character would take you the rest of the way.

rtambree: that thinking kinda seems like the COMPLETE wrong way to rethink it. "Well obviously our audience is a bunch of idiots, so bleh PRETTY LANDSCAPES, there that'll make em happy."

It's funny you mention both Lotr and Avatar.  For LOTR, at least for me, the landscape always takes a backseat to the characters. The landscape is just the canvas for the characters to paint thier story accross. Whereas Avtar is AAAAALLLL about the pretty colors. The characters are just there to give Cameron an excuse to show us this world.

And frankly I would LOVE to stare at this for 2 hours:

So long as it was a story and characters I gave a shit about.

You could easily make a mega-violent, gut-punching STAR WARS successor, so long as you didn't make JOHN CARTER's mistake of resting on the laurels of the source material, expecting the audience to reward you just for showing up. Or protesting "all those other movies ripped off this story" instead of designing a movie with the benefit of knowing what those other movies looked like and not doing that. "It may look like Tatooine but that's because Lucas was influenced by Dune!" ain't gonna fly. You've got millions of dollars, figure out a damn way to make Arrakis not look like Tatooine (EDIT: Or Geonosis) or hire someone who can.

You could also not start with the first book.

It's been a movie, and I think TWO TV mini series. Start with God Emperor, where the damned planet isn't even a desert anymore apart from some protected areas for worms. Come at the story from the side, picking the part of the timeline that's the most interesting.

Re: Dune - Because it's awesome!

From what I remember about God Emperor of Dune, it's mostly the Duncan Idaho clone talking to Jabba the Hutt about human nature in cryptic metaphors.
Aaron Sorkin would need to outdo his fine writing in The Social Network to make that work cinematically.

There's more then that, as there's rebellion and the entire empire is falling apart. Enough, at the very least, to compress into a fun film.

Cool fan concept art. I'm guessing the Lady Jessica and Duke Leto looking at the Guild removalist van.
So long as Hayden Christiansen is not Paul Atreides. And Adam Sandler is not Gurney. And Will Ferrell is not Duncan. And Mike Meyers is not the Baron Harkonnen.
