Topic: #35 - Comic Con!

I hate when announcements go up, and then transparently try to get a conversation going. It always strikes me as patronizing.

But, seriously - got any fun Comic Con stories? What was your experience?

I was thinking of going this year, but then my trip to the US this summer fell apart. Damn you money!

Re: #35 - Comic Con!

I've been going since 2008.  I won't be going this year because I'm saving up to go to Hong Kong for the Lantern Festival.

When I went last year, I basically decided to just go with the flow and sorta let things happen rather than go in with any sort of set schedule of "i'm going to hit this panel at this time."  So, I was walking toward the convention center and I walked up to the Top Gear display they had on the sidewalk.  Got a nifty lens cleaning cloth from them after filling out some form for a competition they were having that weekend.  Didn't think anything of it afterwards, until I got a call from the Top Gear Producer the next morning telling me that I had won the contest and me and one other person could go to this party that Top Gear was hosting in one of the hotels near the convention center.  My buddy and I went to the hotel and got to shake hands with Kate Beckinsale, she's tiny by the way.  We go to the party, have a good time.  When we leave the party towards the evening, we run into Fricking Mark Hamill!!

Now I've made it a point not to get star struck at these things, I mean these are human beings just like you and me.  They all feel the urge to go to the bathroom every now and again.  But this particular time, I got a little start struck.  Mr. Hamill had his back to me and I simple said "Mr. Hamill?"  He turns around and has a almost look of horror/confusion on his face.  "Could my friend and I possibly get a picture with you sir?"  "Oh, yeah sure that's not a problem."  So we got pictures with Mr. Hamill.  He even did the Joker laugh for us!

Re: #35 - Comic Con!

SDCC is still on my bucket list.  Crossing fingers for a week off next year, not only for Comic Con, but to see all my west coast peeps again (damn I miss you guys).

I have been to a few small Star Trek conventions.  When I was in middle / high school a company used to hold them at a local hotel back home.  I got to meet Gates McFadden, Brent Spiner, and Armin Shimerman.  The only real story I have from any of them was going to my first.  I had never been to a con, but I figured I needed to get there early.  So I rode my bike the eight and a half miles there the night before, hoping to get a good spot in line.  But there was no line, and the hotel staff told me I couldn't just camp in the hallway outside the room.  So, I just sat outside all night, eventually falling  asleep.  When I woke up I found that a line had indeed started to form, so I took my place, confident that I would get right in.  Turns out they sell tickets to this sort of thing in advance, so by the time I got in it was already packed.  It was pretty cool though; I bought all kinds of silly things.  One of those was where I got my hands on bootleg copies (from the laserdiscs I assume) of the widescreen (remember when those were hard to find?) extended cuts of Alien and Aliens.  I also got a bootleg of what I thought was some sort of Star Wars behind the scenes / making of feature, which turned out to be The Holiday Special.  I did not watch it.

Re: #35 - Comic Con!

I've gone to the World Science Fiction Convention a half dozen times, which is always fun. No movie or TV stars, but lots of print authors and scientists getting their geek on. And, hey, they give out Hugo awards (what does ComicCon hand out?)

That actually sounds more appealing to me than SDCC.  I'll have to check that World Science Fiction Convention out sometime...

I'd forgotten I'd ever been to a con but there was a small one near where I grew up and like Teague I met Kenny Baker and hit him with a door.

If you're the type of person who enjoys it, it's fun smile This year it's in Chicago again. Basically, it's designed around panels and parties. Most of the day has a half dozen or so panels going on at any one time, anything from writers talking about how to create a universe to working scientist telling how they built a laser for a space elevator in their basement (there's a yearly contest to see who can get the damned thing to actually move up the ribbon). At night geeks gather to drink and procreate, although it's a far cry from Dragon Con. It's non-profit, with leftover money forwarded to the group putting next years con on, they don't try to bring in hoards of fans.

Basically, if you're the type of person who wants to be in a small room with Greg Bear, or the guy who named the Mars rock "Yogi", you'll fit right in.

I can think of one of my friends who would love that kinda thing.  THe Scientist part sounds cool, but I don't like parities all that much...

Re: #35 - Comic Con!

Oh, I skip them too, but they're there if you want them. Often they're bribes to get you to vote for the next city to host Worldcon.

About the episode in question. At some point, Teague mentioned he was someplace where someone was shot, and Trey's request for more information was lost in yet another digression. So, what happened?

Re: #35 - Comic Con!

I'm skeptical. We have loads of video evidence suggesting that Trey does not own shoes.

looks more like one of those slippers you were before bed, or while wearing a smoking jacket.  I bet Trey has a smoking jacket. big_smile

That would suggest that Gabe is a wereleg. Are werelegs even real? What kind of hit dice do they have?

I always pictured Trey as a senmurv. When I first saw the Justin.tv videos, I was like, 'Who is that guy on the right talking with Trey's voice? Where is the rainbow-colored eagle wolf?'

Plus, when I heard that Trey had dated Eve Plumb, I was like, 'Yeah, totally. She would date a senmurv.' It all seemed to fit.

Re: #35 - Comic Con!

Conventions are always home to strange happenings...  haven't listened to the episode yet, but to connect this to Trey, one year at SDCC Trey & I were waiting outside a restaurant for a table, and we watched a bicycle mob and a zombie run go past both within minutes of each other... and not long after, I noticed Richard Taylor from Weta walking right towards us - he sees us recognize him and stops to chat - we introduce ourselves, and I figure I'll never get another chance like this to meet him, so I give him a copy of American Scary...  later that night, I bump into him again at the Lucasfilm party, and he said "oh! well, if you're here, you're not just some fan on the street, are you?" I ended up talking with him for about an hour (he was a Crimson Skies fan), traded business cards, and I've had a sporadic email correspondence with him since...

I could write a book about DragonCon happenings...  big_smile

Re: #35 - Comic Con!

wait... Trey dated a Brady?!  That just makes the man even cooler.
