Topic: Jurassic Park

Hey guys, Teague here, with the end-all be-all of movies that scared me as a child: Jurassic Park. Fittingly, it’s the end of our month of scary movies, and what a month it has been. Nobody should be surprised that we’re all in favor of this movie, and when everyone agrees that a movie rocks, there’s nothing left to do but watch it.

And when you’re done, watch this, made by a Down in Front listener. We quote this even more than we quote Jurassic Park

Re: Jurassic Park

Someone on the internet is wrong! And there aren't any all-knowing show notes to make me feel better. Monarchs at no stage in their life are beetles. Sometimes they look like this and sometimes this and in between they look like this. Thems not beetles.

As for Jurassic Park, it was one of the three VHS tapes we had in the house (the other two being An American Tail: Fievel Goes West and The Gondoliers). I watched it lots. Ian Malcolm might be part of the reason I grew up to be a mathematician. There aren't many movies out there with cool mathematicians.

And yet all the ones that exist seem to star Jeff Goldblum.

Re: Jurassic Park

I'm no Michael Crichton fan, but it's a little disappointing to hear Spielberg get all the credit in that video for the ideas behind Jurassic Park.

Also: I WANT TO RIDE A DINOSAUR AND I DON'T CARE IF WE HAVE TO MELT ALL THE ICE ON EARF TO FIND A FROZEN ONE TO CLONE THERE HAS GOT TO BE SOME UNDER THE ICE IN ANARKICA OR SOMEWHERES

Warning: I'm probably rewriting this post as you read it.

Re: Jurassic Park

About the Shaving Cream Can:
I Got the Jurassic Park Blu-rays for Christmas and on the new documentary (part 4, I think) Spielberg talks how his original plan for the sequel was people going after the shaving cream can and that's why he had the shots of the can falling down the cliff. That changed when Crichton's Lost World went a completely different direction.

Also, the plot of the new video game is about Dodgson sending out a team to retrieve the can.

Re: Jurassic Park

Anyone else reading the new Crichton book "Micro"? It's essentially "Honey I Shrunk The Scientists", but it's an interesting concept that I'd love to see get filmed. It's kind of impressive that Crichton's ideas got harder and harder to film as time went on, as Micro coud only be done on a budget of about $150 million to be done right, and only with today's technology, but Jurassic Park could be filmed in '92 for about $60.

Re: Jurassic Park

I got Micro for my birthday last week. I've only read the first chapter so far, got to finish other books before I commit to reading it.

Re: Jurassic Park

I just read it on the plane ride here. I was...not crazy about it. Crichton is...

...well, let's do this in a new thread.

I got an AT&T signal here on vacation and was going to say how I did a tour of Kauai yesterday that included a few locations from JP, but oh. OHH.

I cast Giant Middle Finger at everyone who mocked me for thinking the shots of the shaving cream can were significant and I have a +4 to I Fucking Told You So.

So. This, only the roles reversed:

Re: Jurassic Park

Watched this again, and among the shots that were discussed as not being obviously meningful, I found this, which I never connected to the theme of the movie either:

Re: Jurassic Park

And I always thought of it as a little foreshadowing that human error and/or faulty design can defeat the best-intentioned technology, which is also a theme of the story.

But the "two females" gag works, too.    The intent could have been either or both - or, as red says, maybe it was just to show Malcolm's a bit of a dork.

Re: Jurassic Park

Well I always thought it was because Grant was bad at technology. Which is why he hates it so much.

This is becoming the most layered and meaningful moment in cinema history.

Re: Jurassic Park

Did anyone else see it in 3D? The conversion was okay, not as good as Titanic's last year. The movie itself still holds up, though. The initial T-rex attack has entered into pop culture, so it's easy to forget just how terrifying it is. Same goes for the scene with the raptors in the kitchen. That Spielberg, he knows what he's doing.
