Topic: Absurd Video Game Cinema (MST3K for Video Games)

I've recently made a video that's like MST3K but using video games instead of movies. It's called Absurd Video Game Cinema or AVGC. There are some skits in between and it's only around 12 minutes long. I hope to make more of these if people like them. What do you guys think?

Idea has a lot of potential (I'm actually kind of shocked it hasn't been tried yet, it makes so much sense), good stuff. I kind of really hate MST3K/rifftrax though, so I'm just not the guy to judge this kind of thing from a comedic POV. In general, I would say in my opinion you're better off focusing the idea on a single thing, which is the "new" element that you're bringing to the table that sets you apart. So I would lose the skits and focus on JUST the mst3k element. The fact that you wanna be short-length episodic is the toughest thing about this, as videogames are sprawling and large, and even MST3K typically tackle feature length movies. When you're dealing with shorter segments, it's tough for the audience to figure out what is going on in the game, which makes it harder to have investment in the jokes (also makes MST3K-style running gags harder). I would say you might be better off trying to pick a single game for an episode, and running an uninterrupted chunk of it for 20 minutes, maybe somewhere from the very opening, as games tend to stack all of their story exposition in the first 30 minutes, which would give you the most material to work with. BDA should post here as this is really his area of expertise more than mine.

Re: Absurd Video Game Cinema (MST3K for Video Games)

Thanks bullet3 for watching the video. Now there have been other "MST3K with video games" videos like Master Chief Theater 3000 and Unskippable where it's just the theatre bits with the silhouettes or just the video with the voice over. None of them have done them with skits. And because I do like MST3K, I wanted to keep that spirit of the show where there were characters and a story with these characters in between the movie. As for the length, I figured that if they were around 12 minutes long that more people would view them. Especially with the other youtube videos being around that same time frame or less. So I thought if I made it like it's a theatre thing with trailers at the beginning and then the cutscenes would be the main feature. Though it wouldn't be too bad if I only had one long cutscene after the trailers were done. But having only pieces of the cutscene or having a few trailers, I can pick which parts have more potential for the better jokes. And I think if you watch enough of the AVGC episodes and have heard of or played these games, then the running gags shouldn't be too hard to keep track of. And I tried to make jokes that even if you don't play video games, you should get at least some of them. But if you're not into this type of humour, well there you go. Again, thank you for watching it and giving me an honest opinion.

No I haven't. I've just finished watching an episode and while what they are doing is different, they also have no skits in between. But they are longer. Did you watch my video Eddie? Any thoughts?

Re: Absurd Video Game Cinema (MST3K for Video Games)

I appreciate you wanting to keep the spirit of MST3K going, but I don't think you get much from the skits.  I also think some of your bits are direct recalls of specific MST3K bits (the meter on your delivery during SC: Ghost was almost identical to the recurring gag from Space Mutiny).  It's a good start.  I would say don't be so slavish to MST3K.

I actually haven't seen the Space Mutiny episode in a while, so that's kinda interesting. But the idea for this video was essentially a pilot episode for this show, so the skits weren't as silly or crazy and just trying to see how everything would work. But I think if I work on the skits more, there could be something to get out of them.
