You're right Trey, it's not magical, just improbable.

What stretches credibility for me is the deus ex machina of [SPOILERS] the gangsters joining forces with the FBI against the Nazis [END SPOILERS].

But that's exactly what happened during the war, and one reason the FBI sort of ignored the mafia for so long after the war. They used their contacts to help the US invasion of Sicily and Italy, especially after Italy surrendered and the Germans kept occupying the country. However, I'm not sure that info had been declassified when Rocketeer came out so it may just be a lucky coincidence smile

Re: Suggest a movie!

It's more the manner in which it is done. It's like Shane and Jack Palance teaming up because the town is suddenly attacked by Indians seconds before they are about to draw on each other.

Or at least, that's the way I remember it. I should watch it again.

If it's been suggested already, I apologize; The Shawshank Redemption.

No, no.  Brother from another father and mother, doesn't sound as good.

You just did.  And it was AWESOME.

We've recorded Alien 3 and we make reference to that being very similar to Pitch Black.  I'd like to do more underrated Sci Fi.  Moon, Sunshine, The Fountain, etc.

Another thing Trey and I have talked about is doing more classic cinema.  I was raised on 40's Noir, 50's Sci Fi,  60's samurai classics, 70's Kung Fu movies, and 80's Fuck Yeah crap movies.  My DVD/Blu Ray collection reflects this...and it waits.   Oh....it waits.

Seven Samurai/The Magnificent Seven would make for a fun pair of commentaries.

It has recently come to my attention that one of your fearless company has not see "Black Hawk Down."

This wants fixing.

Black Hawk Down might actually work in 2010, now that every one of the actors is famous and can actually be distinguished from each other.

After a few years and some more acting appearances, the robot sequences in Transformers 2 will start to make sense as well.

Re: Suggest a movie!

Any Kurosawa movie is good. Hidden Fortress on the basis of its Star Wars influences (GL used it again for TPM) and Yojimbo for its influence on For a Few Dollars More (or is it Fistful of Dollars? I always get them muddled up) are the easy choices.

But I think Sanjuro has a lot to offer and High And Low is good too.

Continuing the classics theme, I'd suggest Spartacus - a Kubrick film like no other.

Imagine my surprise to discover there was a Disney "classic" that I'd never heard of...

But now I get it - Internet.  Ironic tone.  Never mind, move along.

Rashomon and SS are my go to favorites but I like Ran, Yojimbo and Throne of Blood quite a bit.  Also some of his earlier, non Samurai stuff is great too.  Sanshiro Sugata, Shubun,  and No Regrets for Our Youth, which in and of itself is a forgotten little gem, hold up quite well.

I personally never got much into Spagetti Westerns, as I always learned more towards Peckinpah than Sergio Leone, (although Once Upon a Time in America is one of my favorite films of all time with the single saddest post production hack job, ever).  I see the value in them.

For Kubrick it makes perfect sense for our next one to be Dr. Strangelove since we all, well, love it.  But I would totally be down for The Shining, as well.  It goes without saying that as a DiF reservist I suggest movies at the leisure of the main four.

Don't know why this one popped into my head, but... A Bridge Too Far. Probably one of the last "dozens of international stars" movies, and a great story to boot.

"The Professional."

Or "Leon" if you want, but I vote "The Professional" since it's the one I still have after lending my "Leon" DVD out and never getting it back.
