I kinda lean that way myself.

Something about a person HAVING to defend Hitler to avert someone worse...it's a playground for tough questions.

I'm going to write this short story someday:

A guy builds a time machine to go back in time and kill hitler. When he finds the young man, a struggling artist, he can't bring himself to do it. So he buys a painting instead, and tells Adolf he has promise, but not to give up.
Then he heads back home, beating himself up, only to discover that Hitler became an influential artist who was a bit of an anti-semitic douchebag, but who didn't go into politics. WWII and Nazism was therefore averted.

Eh. It's probably already been done.

Alternately, a guy who works in a lab in which multiple time machines are being tested goes back in time to kill or stop hitler and realizes if he succeeds, somebody far worse will rise in his place. So he spends the rest of the story protecting hitler (and hating himself for it) from his colleagues, who keep trying to come back in time, since he apparently failed. While the first few attempts are kept secret from the future fuhrer, one of the hero's colleagues almost succeeds. The hero's sacrificial efforts to stop him produces a change in hitler, who does not ultimately go into politics as a result.
Of course, that means the worse dictator will eventually rise to power, but hey, not every ending can be perfect.

...it's probably also been done. Anyway, there's my brainstorm for the day.

I imagine reddit would be an amazing place for character inspiration. But I'm reluctant to spend time there. Are there any subreddits that specialize in interesting life stories?

I like the idea of semi-formalizing things, though taking such things slowly is probably a good idea.

I don't have any ideas for a new subforum subject currently. I suspect such things will arise organically as we go along.

I didn't like Centurion mainly because everything seemed really hammy and even fantasy to me. Mainly the woman with her magical ability to sense being watched from long distances, which was indicated by a dramatic head turn and penetrating stare. They weren't tracked down--they were magically found by an implausible enemy who knew just where to look as it was convenient to the plot.
The same chase scenes in The Eagle worked for me because they were actually being tracked.
As for Tatum's injury magically healing, I'm not sure where you're getting that. His getting terribly sick and slowly recovering was covered in an extended sequence that culminated in him boar hunting. He was fine until being beaten and in the elements caused his injuries to act up.

I agree that the seal people were odd, though the director actually said he wanted them to seem like they were very different from typical depictions of celtic peoples. They were in the far north of britain, and had their own thing going on for a long time. Which makes sense to me. There were many, many tribes of "celts" with very different cultures before invasions finally unified the ethnicity of the island.

About the american accents, cool, right? Also from the director, that was on purpose. Old movies always gave the romans british accents because they were the stereotypical imperial power of the time. Today, that's considered America. Which, fine. Whatever. But I get his point and why he made that choice.

I actually LOVED the battles, or at least the one in which Tatum is injured. I liked that this movie didn't go the "epic" route, but focused on small skirmishes. But that's me.

One major mark I have against this movie is the moment when SPOILER the little boy is pulled out and killed in front of Bell. That was ridiculous. There is no way they brought him all that way. My suspicion is they got to the final battle and realized that Bell's character probably didn't have a lot of motivation to fight with the Romans, and said "I know! Let's pretend his surrogate younger brother was with the hunters the whole time! Then they can kill him for ridiculous reasons, and that will make Bell mad so he fights!"
I thought that was pretty stupid. Bell could have used a little more development to make that work beyond "loyal slave/friend"

I also really liked that this movie didn't really shy away from the reality that life in imperial societies is tough. People kill each other in horrible ways. There aren't any real good guys or bad guys, just winners and losers. The moment when Tatum kills the young tribesman who Bell spares is brutal, but really honest. The movie isn't saying who is right or wrong. It's just showing what kind of stuff happened.

I know I'm late to the game, and I'm not really interested in joining, but I'd recommend checking out the XD20 system by Tracy Hickman, who wrote a lot of adventures for D&D. The rules are like Chess: you can learn them in five minutes, but tons of room for mastering and having fun.

From a review:
"So I play-tested it. A lot. I’ve now run it for several months and have come to the following conclusion:
Advanced XDM is the best thing to happen to RPGs since the 20 sided die."

So, I haven't seen this movie in a little bit, but I'll give my remembered thoughts here and then watch it for a more detailed response.

1. I think the acting works well. Not great, but not bad. I like Bell's character, and Tatum conveys a prideful roman very well, but the movie really did well with the Seal people. Local people who could speak gaelic were sought out (and that's a small field), but I think it worked awesome for them. I watch this movie and I love how the language sounds.

2. I love the soundtrack. It's funny though because it continues the tradition of uilleann pipes (traditionally irish bagpipes) in movies set in Scotland. Braveheart did this as well. Personally, I'd love to hear highland pipes in a movie, but I get that uilleann pipes have a greater range and can produce more interesting melodies.

3. The early battle is awesome.

Poster art aside, I think the movie is better for not having the "torch London" scene. It may have been budget limits, but limiting most of the movie to the castle lets decimated London stand out more. I liked it.
Don't really agree with you on the character arcs being forced and character wants being undefined.
Bale wanted people to be safe and outlast the dragons as they starve. He is ultimately forced to understand that sitting on his ass will accomplish nothing and confronts his fears of going back to London.
McConn-whatever was more "let's go guns blazing" with arrogance, trying to take over Bale's operation and force the victory. He ultimately realizes that won't work and tells Bale "you lead, we follow" because Bale knows London.
The two men learn their own plans won't work but a compromise will: be quiet and stay down, but sneak into London and attack the king dragon.

The lady definitely felt forced and two-dimensional. But that's hardly unique to this movie.

Finally no real distinguishment is necessary between humans-oppressed-by... in my opinion.
Humans react in predictable ways in apocalyptic situations. It's when they rise above their own concerns that a story comes out of it. The dragons/zombies/robots don't matter: it's the human reaction that matters. We saw enough of the dragons to get that WE DON'T WANT TO SEE THEM MORE. Because they're dangerous. I think we saw too much of Smaug. Focus on the people.

Anyway, those are my thoughts.

Taxes. I don't give a damn. I'm a socially conservative Christian, and I grew up in TN as a political conservative, so increasing taxes was something that I felt strongly about. Now, I think it makes sense that taxes can be raised too much and discourage growth, but in my experience the same people who are upset about taxes (conservatives mostly) are more concerned about keeping their money instead of acting out the faith and love they believe in by using it to help others.
If only the Christian churches banded together, we'd be capable of solving the poverty problem in the US at least. But they're more concerned about the government taking their money while claiming they trust God.

Well I actually do trust God to provide, and since christians aren't doing what we should, the government can take the money. Shut up and act your faith.

What is the single most wonderful thing someone unrelated to you has done for you?

Just saw this for the first time. I liked it, though had a hard time following who was on which planet and why they went where. Big thing I thought was clear that seems to have confused other people.
The end shows Hathaway contemplating a placard which leads us to think that the science ship was destroyed there and people killed. So people keep saying she's alone.

She smiles and starts walking back to a large, powered camp the camera suddenly reveals. Is this supposed to be for just her?
I thought it showed that this planet was the success, and the scientists were alive and helping her prepare a colony.

Also I thought the wormhole collapsed after MM did his thing in the Time Room?

Is there any way we could set up a live chat and just watch the chosen movies together? Like "1955 EST everyone get your DVD ready on first frame of whatever and sign on to livechat. At exactly 2000 EST, unpause." For anyone who happens to be available.
Sites like disposablechat.com make such collaboration pretty easy.

Week 002:: 4 :: Writhyn :: "Reign of Fire" (2002)

This movie has dragons. And they used live flamethrowers for effects.
And a Star Wars recreation.
And Matt McCon' as a crazy tank commander.
I think it's underrated. Let's watch it.
