Alright, I need something confirmed by those much smarter than I.

One of my teachers at school started randomly talking about Fight Club and brought up the fact that the sex scene was done completely digitally...to which I replied with a wonderfully blank stare.

I could see why they would do it digitally, but I have no clue if it's true.

Any one have any ideas?

I was of course using the car example as an extreme example which could also be easily applied to something less extreme, but most of your points are taken.

Surrogates, were they a considered, real invention, would have no need for monitors or input devices because they provide both of those services to the user, because the user is looking through HUD goggles and clearly able to operate an impossibly complicated robot with thought alone - thinking some search terms into the configuration is not gonna be a big deal.

For a toy built for rich folks to basically turn them into giant walking dolls...give it a minute, It'll come to you.

You also seemed to miss the major point I was trying to make, which I will give you, kinda ended up getting buried. So I'll restate it a little clearer and with a cooler head.

My entire basic premise is that the surrogates were created exactly for this reason, to allow the rich and powerful (and eventually "everyone") to live their lives without the fear of dying or having to feel pain, or deal with solving problems (The whole just log off in the middle of the convo thing you guys touched on). And granted they grew up a bit, the army got a hold of them and weaponized them of course, but in their basic form they are still just a tool to allow the entirety of humanity to shield themselves from the harshness of real life. Yet, us still being human, we're weird, and still insist on having a certain level of real life (eating, drinking, the physical act of sex), I'm sure they probably could just pipe the feelings directly into your frontal cortex, but there's something inside the physical act of doing it that allows the humans to separate themselves from the oddness of the whole robot thing.

So going back to the point I made in the original post. The entirety of humanity, at least those with Surrogates, are simply playing the game of humanity and the Surrogates are their Avatars (no, not those avatars).

Again not defending the movie, just trying to provide a possible explanation to counter your blank faced dismissal of the entire universe.

Alright guys, this one really really REALLLY started to piss me off after a while, and I seriously wish I could have been there to say something...not that you would have answered anyways.

Anyways, here's my beef. For the ENTIRETY of the commentary you are consistently underestimating the stupidity of the human race as tech hungry morons. Literally every other second one of you brings up "Well why isn't this like this??" or "Why don't they just be a (Insert random thing here)", or "Why is he drinking coffee as a surrogate?" etc etc. The entire thing felt like you weren't even trying to do the 'ol Dif "How do we fix this?" and instead simply resorted to mocking every conceivable thing your imaginations could come up with without any thought behind the concept or truthful analysis of anything. (Explanation follows)

Partially you are doing the exact same joke over and over  and over, and I expect better from you guys. But more so I definitely disagree with the entire argument you are trying to prove.

I'll use the specific example of the coffee thing. Surrogates were created as a cool toy for rich people, it has all this really cool technology behind it, but essentially it's just a toy. As someone brought up, The Sims for real life. A way for people to be themselves without having to be themselves, a way to transplant themselves wholly and fully into a separate body. So just because you don't HAVE to drink or eat or what have you when you are a surrogate, that doesn't mean that you are just going to give it up entirely. If you did that you would be ruining the experience. Consider the concept of role players, (lets go civil war reenanctors to stay on the more pg side of things), just stopping of the normal ever day life things that you do as a person, would be akin to reenactor suddenly busting out with some ACDC in camp. It completely ruins the mood of the game everyone is playing. Because literally that's what this entire world has devolved into, a giant game, and all the people are playing the game of humanity through their surrogates.

On a more techy level (I'm going to be reading into my interpretation of how the Surrogate tech works a little bit, but I think I'm on the right track), you guys keep bringing up this concept of turning into a pterodactyl or car or whatever the fuck or even the concept of why they still need video screens, etc etc. But the thing I always keep coming back to is, we are still fucking human, we have two arms, two legs, two eyes and we see/touch/experience life in that very very singular manner, that is the way our brains have developed to work from birth.  I'm sure you could probably throw my consciousness into a car, but my brain would freak the fuck out, I don't know how to do shit, every single visual/audial/sensory input I have is working in a completely different way then I am used to, I'm sure I would be in there, but I couldn't do anything. Avatar brought up the concept a touch where Jake doesn't know how to control his tail. Why? Because he's never had a tail before, his brain isn't wired to know how to control a tail. Of course he does eventually sort of learn, and I'm sure I could eventually learn to be a car. But in a world where everyone would rather lay at home only experiencing the world through a robot, do you think ANYONE will be willing to put in the time to learn how to be?

Or hell, even on a strictly business level, what business is going to manufacture a car surrogate, do all the R&D, manufacture testing, and spend all that cash, on a product that isn't going to sell. It's simple math.

Alright, I needed to get that out of my system. If this entire commentary was just another continuation of the joke and not a legitimate analysis of the movie, I apologize for that, but otherwise, what the fuck guys? Seriously.

(Please note, I am not defending the movie in any way, I am simply trying to point out, that just because it is a bad movie, does not instantly mean that every single thing in it is wrong and should be assumed so at face value.)
And if I'm the only one that felt this way, this is the last you'll hear of it, but it got to me, and it got to me bad.

EDIT: I should clarify, I'm only an hour and 20 into the commentary, so if anything is explained from this point I apologize. I just had a massive build up of hate towards DiF that needed to be expelled, which I have only ever experienced once before...   I don't enjoy it.

A little update, we were recently (well, yesterday) nominated and won a VFS Impact Award in the "Mission Impossible" category for this little piece of work. Granted they are just the internal VFS awards thing, it's campy, it's corny, it's mostly just marketing but it's still kinda cool.

Hmm alright, and her engines will have a similar layout to Serenity, so I'll have to play with it and see what works. I'm going to try o get a rough sketch of the ship design I have now thrown up in a few days and get your guys' thoughts on it. I need to redesign some stuff, because it's still much to reminiscent of Serenity for my liking. (Damn you Joss and your logical ship layout!)

The way I'm envisioning it right now will be a combination of live action and CG. With the people being live action, with the main set (The roof) being a dressed up parkade or something similar with a matte painting background and set extensions. And then everything else will be CG.

@ JackalBane: Will do, I wasn't really sure about that when I wrote it but I thought I'd leave it in and see if anyone said anything tongue And yeah, thats one of the things I've noticed do research for these types of things (trailers). Video games tend to be more cinematic, whereas movies just tend to be a mashup of all the best bits.

@Jeff: Hehe, I'm still trying to find my own voice when writing a screenplay and I tend to let myself go even wilder when writing something like this. But you got the basic gist of it.

Essentially, one side of a pointless war (the more tech savvy side) starts to take some of their best soldiers and make them even better with tech upgrades and things like that. So hence why even though the war has been over for so long she still looks so young and can't die from a single gunshot wound etc etc, and all the fun stuff like that. And now that the war is over she effectively has no purpose in the new worlds (yes plural), but she's not the kind of gal to go off and committ sepuku over a little thing like that so she tries to scrape out a new existence for herself.

I've got about a page of other backstory to this world if you want it, but it looks like my rewrite after Dorkmans post did some good if you arn't lost in it.

The opening shots were definitely the first shots I had envisioned, yes, and I really really love them, so basically yeah, waif not so much. Plus I'm really starting to love this whole Firefly meets Dollhouse finale thing I've got going on.

@Invid:...I can't tell if you're joking or not hmm

As far as what the series would actually be about...the way I'm envisioning it right now would be taking place several years after the war has finished, people have started to rebuild, and it's about Qwin and another crew of black market runners (maybe, this is still kinda fuzzy) trying to survive in this new world after fighting for so long. And then, they'd probably meet at some point and have cake, and all sorts of happy fun times would ensue.

Thanks guys! Keep em comin if you got em.

So in the vein of the self learning I've been doing this week on here I thought I'd throw this one out there for you guys to pick apart. (Or in other words....I NEED YOUR HEEEEEELP)

So heres the situation, I'm about to start my second year at Vancouver Film School (3D Animation and Visual Effects)...this is the big one, this is what really counts. So I've already started planning for my final project for this year. I've started concept designs and have a first draft of the script completed. Which I think works pretty well...but then I also thought that about my last project...which you guys proceeded to tear to shreds (And rightfully so btw). Which brings us to the now.

I want to get your guys opinions on this project. Mostly so I can get as many eyes as possible on it to pick it apart and make it as awesome as possible, but also because I think we've all identified a major issue with me in that I rely waaaay to heavily on my own back story when creating my pieces (and this is no exception) and don't properly use it in the actual piece.

So I'm here to learn, rip and tear away!

Have Fun

(Just a note: This is meant to be a sort of teaser trailer that would be promoting for the actual show, while at the same time feeling like it's own self contained thing. Basically I wanted to try to do a trailer with having to just do the whole montage of explosions and crying people thing.)

Thanks!

I'd be up.

Hmm, I follow what you mean, but I can't find the "shine" effect inside After Effects. Do you mean Trapcode Shine? Cause I don't have access to that.

Ooo, good point Teague. Movers worked for me, up til the ending, but knowing the backstory of the behind the scenes answered that one for me.

BTW Teague, are you pretty much in agreement with everyone else about all this?

Dorkman, I freakin love you, that was perfect.

<Jumps back into his project and starts a new draft>

Alright I think I need a case study for this one...

Firefly...

So we have this entirely new universe to play in. But we are never given any amount of explanation for the majority of that universe. Sure we understand the basic broad strokes, Alliance=big bad government, inner planets rich, outer worlds not so rich. But we never get an explanation (In series) for the whole Chinese thing or the mix of Western and Eastern influences, they are simply there in the background and we as the audience are expected to figure it out.

I wouldn't say any of that is necessary to understanding the ultimate point of the story, at least as far I understand it. We could easily have the story of this ragtag team of people surviving on the fringes of civilization without any of the Chinese stuff. So by your logic, all of that is a distraction. But obviously it isn't, so why not?

I guess another way to  put it is, where is the difference in building a universe to play in, and just having it be distractions for the audience? Is it simply a matter of execution?

PS. It's also ENTIRELY possible that I have been arguing this with myself for so long that am completely missing the point now.

Alright so I have a question for all you wonderful people out there that somewhat relates to this project but more to the one I'm currently writing.

Where is the line drawn between the back story of a world being visible, adding detail and a certain amount of mystery to the piece and where it begins to detract from the piece?

Yeah I think it's just the angle.

Well I was trying to give it the aesthetics of looking out into fairly deep water, so it wouldn't be the "sky blue" color that shallower pools are, but the much darker , near black it is. But understood.

For the rays go, as far as I can tell we are talking about the same thing. There are spotlights located along the exterior of the 3 central support beams pointing inwards towards the scene. The only rays coming from the "surface" are the ones much further back in the scene.

Alright, in order:

Dorkman:

-There is actaully ALOT of blue light in the shot, the entire aquarium is being lit by blue light, except for a few yellow lights spread aloing the walkways. Although I think the textures might have been killing most of the blueness. So that's probably my bad.

-Yeah, the crisscrossing was a (failed) attempt to make it look like some sort of artificial light was involved. (A large part of this also links back to the backstory of this thing, which looking back was probably way to much of an abstract idea to get accross in such a short time with the resources I had available.)

-The lights coming "fromt the glass" are actually meant to be spotlights installed on the support beams pointing out lighting the God Whale/Kelp and etc.

-The God Rays were created with a caustics generator (Namely cause I couldn't figure out any way to generate them with after effects or Maya in any decent amount of time. So I didn't have alot of control over them, although I thought they looked alright, but maybe you're right.

-The music...yeah, just yeah, I know

-Foundation year refers to the Foundation course at Vancouver Film School, which basically amounts to my first year here. ALthough my first and second year are entirely seperate courses this is the introduction course to everything. Yeah it's kind of confusing.

Jeff:

-The grade...this was intentional, again it links back to the overarching backstory of what this entire complex is supposed to be, that just didn't come accross. If you guys want I can throw it all up on here and see what you think.

-I'm not really sure what you mean by a wide shot, the first shot of the aquarium is about as wide as I could get. Or do you mean a shot of the entire complex, like forest and aquarium and everything? (AGain, way to big of an idea, small amount of time)

-Yeah, this project was hit by maaaaaaasive time hits, and I know every project has that but mine was that to the extreme, by the end I probably lost at least a week and a half if not 2 weeks of solid work time. SO yes, I totally know what you mean.

Thanks guys, keep it comin.

smile Pretty much what didn't work was the signs setting up the environment as this futuristic zoo/nature reserve, and a more technical level the girls looking at the aquarium as the camera cranes up. /secrecy
Yeah Blender is awesome, I did all my modeling, sculpting, UV unwrapping and normal baking in it; I love my Blender.
