Topic: One book for the rest of your life

You're about to move to a remote, uninhabited island. Maybe you're rich and you want to be alone; maybe you've committed a horrible crime and you've been exiled. You're going to have all the supplies you need, but you can only take one book with you. Just one book for the rest of your life, to read over and over again or to use for toilet paper or whatever.

Which one do you take?

The largest unedited collection of Aleister Crowley's writings on magick I can find. Not only is he funny and entertaining, maybe with nothing else to do I'll be able to get it to work smile

Hm.

I have no good answer to this.

Me neither. That's why I asked the question. ;-)

Re: One book for the rest of your life

Well, it is like being asked what album you'd like to listen to over and over for the rest of your life. Slow readers would have the advantage over those of us who could plow through 100+ pages a day. You want something big, and probably practical. Most would probably go for either the religious text of their choice or a one volume encyclopedia.

Album is easier, The Fragile.

Heck, assume your private island has unlimited shelf space. Want to bring along the large-print unabridged edition of À la recherche du temps perdu? Knock yourself out.

Hey, you like Star Trek.

I think my book would be Anathem or John Dies at the End. Anathem because it's my favorite of the long books I like, JDatE because it's funny, and that might be nice.

I'm sooo looking forward to the thread where we talk about what famous person, living or dead, we'd want to have dinner with.

Followed by if we were animals, what kind would we be.

A fucking Kindle, we live in the future.

Barring that, the biggest cookbook I can find.

When.

Kindle.

Or some 2500-page crap that takes forever to read anyways.

I'm thinking something along the lines of the Ranger handbook, or the SAS survival manual.  I'm a pragmatist.

That's my answer next time someone asks me that. A Kindle and a solar USB charger. And before leaving I'll max out my credit cards filling it up with books. Either I'll have something to read the rest of my life or the collection agencies will find and rescue me so they can get their money back. Then I'll just declare bankruptcy. Either way I win, basically.

I seem to remember someone asking that in the top 5 topic. Ah, top 5 i miss you...

I'd bring the Hyperion Omnibus (the first 2 Hyperion books). Love that story.

Good one. I have all five books in one. Does that count?
