Trailer is... acceptable, but that's only the first hurdle. Second hurdle: rotten tomatoes score needs to be over 80%. Only then will I allow Godzilla to kindly take my money.

Let's be honest: the more the film is like a REAL Godzilla film, the lower the score will be. I'm going to be very curious as to what standard people hold this movie up to.

Depends on what you think of as a "real" Godzilla movie. I think this remake is going for the serious, morbid tone of the original film.

And I doubt that's what people want out of one of these films smile Almost no US filmgoer has seen the uncut version of that film, so it's not on the radar. No matter what they do, I'm betting half the people say "that's not Godzilla".

Agreed. Although, to be fair, what this amps up to me, seems exactly like how you'd make the original Godzilla today.

I disagree, I think you greatly over-estimate people's cultural familiarity with Godzilla. My guess is 90% of US audiences have never seen a Godzilla movie, except for maybe the shitty Emerich version. They'll be far more open to a grounded, scary-movie tone than to a silly Pacific Rim-type approach.

Of course, we know that Godzilla fights other monsters in this movie, so audiences (myself included) might still hate it.

Re: Godzilla (2012)

Even if I hadn't watched the trailer, the fact that it's a Godzilla movie is a kind of a big tip-off that there's probably going to be some cities being destroyed.

I highly doubt we see any over-exaggerated classic Godzilla monster fights. Gareth Edwards seems committed to making this a very dark and terrifying movie. I suspect the monsters fights we see will be more reminiscent of the T-Rex versus the Raptors at the end of Jurassic Park or Kong versus the T-Rexes from the Jackson remake. Speaking of which, hopefully any human versus monster stuff is similar to the pit scene.

Re: Godzilla (2012)

I'm interested in this (hell, if Bryan Cranston can't sell it, who can?), but I'm wary. What could this do that Pacific Rim and World War Z didn't do, other than be better crafted?

Also, it occurs to me that World War G would be a good title for a Godzilla movie.

Warning: I'm probably rewriting this post as you read it.

I assume they think Godzilla means low budget guy in suit walking through HO scale models. My point is using the Godzilla name is going to bring baggage in the US that will work against WHATEVER approach you use. Maybe this film will finally change how US audiences view the character. Maybe it will tank because those that went wanted stupid monsters in a campy movie, and were disappointed. We'll have to see.

Well America said No to the Pacific Rim approach, maybe they'll embrace this darker more realistic take on it

I, for one, am tired of darker more realistic takes.

It's a giant fucking monster created as a byproduct of mankind's destructive nature. How is it not inherently dark?

Re: Godzilla (2012)

Yeah, it's not like other "dark and gritty reboots" that we've recently seen. The original is already really dark. All they have to do is match it.

Re: Godzilla (2012)

EDIT: Boy, was I on the wrong page when I clicked 'Reply'. Bear with me.

Plus, destroying a city is kind of the whole point of Godzilla. He was destroying cities before destroying cities was cool.
It was mostly cuz of wars and nukes and stuff and people didn't really enjoy that so much.

Also, let's keep in mind... it's a movie about a giant lizard destroying a city. It ain't gonna be Inception.
I'm just hoping they find something new to discuss. The bit about nuclear tests being a coverup is a good start, not bad as historical retcons go. If Godzilla had helped mankind advance their civilization or was hidden on the moon this whole time, I wouldn't even rent it.

Oh come on, Resolute was awesome. Dark/gritty/realistic is cool and everybody knows it.
Besides, how else would you do a film like this nowadays? PacRim did the colorful/dark thing of the early 00's that was all *thought* was realistic (Oh, Spider-Man), but it did not go over well.

I have to say, having never seen a Godzilla film, I'm absolutely stoked after seeing that trailer. (The real one not the Breaking Bad one. tongue )

Re: Godzilla (2012)

Aside from the Emmerich one, I don't believe I've ever seen one of the old ones in their entirety. Definitely seen parts, really, really tacky parts from the many sequels.
Looking forward to that original cut hi-def version coming out soon, I'll definitely sit down and watch that.

Re: Godzilla (2012)

I'd recommend Mothra vs Godzilla from 1964, Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster from the same year, and Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla from 2002. Ghidorah is the film in which they start to turn Godzilla into a good guy (and the dub has the classic line, "There's no law against being a demagogue."
