Re: Last movie you watched

That animated gif has really got me curious!

Saw two films recently that at first glance would seem worlds apart. Last week I had heard of neither and wish I could see more films like this, i.e. completely ignorant.

The Way

Having gone to France to pick up the body of his son who died on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, Martin Sheen sets off to complete the journey. He meets people along the way, gets into some mild adventures and comes to terms with the loss. I liked this, it was poignant and moving without feeling sentimental. I also found it relatable as I too would like to drop everything and just go for a very long walk.

Gaten Ragnarok

A Norwegian film I stumbled across on Wikipedia. An archaeologist following clues from the Oseberg burial ships takes his kids with him on an expedition into the wilderness of Finnmark in Northern Norway to discover what happened to some vikings. Quite a surprise this one, I was expecting a light Jones style adventure yarn but this was really dripping with atmosphere. There are some derivative moments but it's worth a watch.

IMDb

I didn't have any hopes for this, as I'd never even heard of it. It's on Netfilx, and I saw a picture of Jim Carrey with long, blonde hair. That about does it for me, whenever I'm in the mood for something light-hearted, but the film is actually pretty good.
It's Steve Carell and Jim Carrey, so you kinda know what you're in for, but it surprised me on all accounts. I'd highly recommend it.

IMDb wrote:

A veteran Vegas magician tries to revive his career after his longtime partner quits, he gets fired from his casino act, and an edgy new "street magician" steals his thunder.

So if you don't really enjoy Steve Carell, except from "Dan in Real Life", but enjoy Jim Carrey's later work, Olivia Wilde and Steve Buscemi, This might be right up your alley.

**NOTE**
Watching the trailer after the fact, it doesn't really do the film justice.

I've seen only a few Woody Allen movies until today (Annie Hall was the only one I really liked). When I noticed that these two are available for free on VOD, I decided to give them a shot; they turned out to be OK. Blue Jasmine benefits greatly from Cate Blanchett's performance; you could almost argue that her character is what Galadriel would be in real life. Whatever Works has some nice satire and an overall pleasant feel.

They're not nearly as funny as Annie Hall, but I don't regret spending 3 hours watching them.

Re: Last movie you watched

A while since my last post in this thread, so pardon the length.

Birdman (2014) - 8/10 (8.5)

http://d1oi7t5trwfj5d.cloudfront.net/6c/4f/7e611c334658a274befa5eee42e8/birdman.jpg

What a terrific film. The only thing preventing me from going higher in score is the somewhat quirky nature of it makes it perhaps not hit as hard as it could have on an emotional level.
Still, hugely satisfying with superb performances. This was just a joy to watch, and the illusion of a single take without cutting between cameras just made me sink into the frame and follow the film from first frame to last. Nothing gets in the way of just watching and enjoying the film, not even an editor. It also makes it feel very organic and real.
Definitely watch this. Keatong is superb, Ed Norton is even more so, and Emma Stone is also absolutely great.

The Equalizer (2014) - 6/10 (7.3)

http://movieboozer.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/equalizer1.jpg

Denzel plays humble man with a particular set of skills. Is it what you are likely imagining it will be? Probably. But still well-made, even if a standard action film. If you like action films in general might be worth watching.

The Monuments Men (2014) - 5/10 (6.1)

http://nojesguiden.se/sites/default/files/users/9466/monuments2.jpg

Clooney and co are hunting down art stolen by the nazis during the 2nd World War.
This movie is just all over the place, and still nowhere at the same time. It's fractured, bland, doesn't establish a particular tone, and is diffuse in geography, time and characterization. Plus the subject matter just isn't that interesting, possibly unless you are interested in art in general.
Most things in this film are wrong to me. It's saved by good, albeit mostly miscast or severely underused, actors like Bill Murray, Damon, Blanchett and more.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007) - 9/10 (7.6)

http://cdn.collider.com/wp-content/uploads/the-assassination-of-jesse-james.jpg

Wow. Can't believe I didn't see this until now. The running time is close to Dark Knight Rises length, but wow. This is fantastic.
The film starts characters out in one perspective and then almost imperceptibly turns things around and moves them into a new light.
Excellent acting from Pitt, Casey Affleck, Sam Rockwell, and many others. And superb writing, imagine the dialog of Tarantino but without the underlying sense of humor, or extra twist or theatricality he usually puts on things.
Roger Deakins photography and lighting is gorgeous.

The film started and I soon thought "Casey Affleck got an Oscar nod for this"?
Then it ended and I thought "well, of course he fucking did".

Housebound (2014) - 6/10 (6.8)

http://www.wtfcinema.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/HOUSEBOUND-Entity-e1413852546166.png

Charming New Zealand horror/comedy/thriller film. Reminds me of Peter Jacksons early work, just has a carefree, playful vibe, while still playing to many horror/thriller cliches.
Girl gets in trouble with the law and is sentenced to house arrest... with her parents.
Starts out with the "is there something in this house" tropes, then moves on from there.

If you like horror films in general, or twists of the formula, worth seeing. A competent lower budget feeling movie with personality and charisma.

The Interview (2014) - 6/10 (7.2)

https://thenypost.files.wordpress.com/2014/12/the_interview1.jpg

Makes you wonder what all the fuzz was about. Absolutely the type of Rogen/Franco film you'd expect. If you like "Pineapple Express", you'd probably like this. You see it mainly for the personalities of the leads, and they could just as well be playing the same characters from "Pineapple Express" or "This Is The End".
Harmless silliness.

The Devil Wears Prada (2006) - 6/10 (6.8)

http://andrewpegodadotcom.files.wordpress.com/2013/07/andy-sachs-the-devil-wears-prada-204945_1400_929.jpg

Actually a quite good "chick flick" about the world of fashion. Hard to describe but I enjoyed it. Lighthearted for the most part, pretty well-written female characters when necessary.

Get Carter (1971) - 6/10 (7.6)

http://michaelklingerpapers.uwe.ac.uk/projectimages/get_carter/6.jpg

Michael Cain wants to find who killed someone.
Well-made, but feels old. I was struggling to maintain interest at times to be honest, it's not at all generous with any sort of substance, so most of the time you are left in the present moment, with little facts or information to use to reflect on what is going on.

The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) - 9/10 (8.1)

https://thenypost.files.wordpress.com/2013/10/grandbudapest.jpg

Wow, this was fantastic. Such a quick, snappy, witty, charming, delightful movie.
Ralph Finnes steals the show.
See it.

Predators (2010) - 6/10 (6.4)

https://bloglagoon.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/mwc-2010-09-25-predators20101.jpg

Rewatched this again.
Am now actually quite stoked for the sequel that appears to be in the works.
This was probably the best type of sequel to the original they could have done. Same setup, but very re-contextualized.

Nightcrawler (2014) - 7/10 (8.1)

http://cdn.collider.com/wp-content/uploads/nightcrawler-jake-gyllenhaal1.jpg

Excellent film, Gyllenhaals character is memorably slimy.
Could perhaps have had a bit more bite or taken things one step further, but it's a great film.
Also excellent photography by (edit) Robert Elswit.

Aliens (1986) - 10/10 (8.4)

http://jeffreyklyles.files.wordpress.com/2013/07/aliens-1986-newt-and-alien.jpg

Rewatch and a score bump. Fantastic. Incredible. Masterclass in pretty much all areas of filmmaking.

Why Don't You Play in Hell? (2013) - 8/10 (7.4)

http://dailygrindhouse.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/RAINBOWS.jpg

I know some of you guys previously mentioned this film, so I had to track it down.
Wow, it's really something. It's like 3-4 films put together, where they start out separately, but then flows together towards the end into a quite spectacularly interesting mix.
Like a Tarantino film, if he was Japanese and on drugs, after falling and mixing together 3 different screenplays.
Hard to describe, but the components are all very good, acting, direction, cinematography.

Just watched "Wreck-It Ralph" with my kids and was pleasantly surprised. A lot of fun in-jokes to the video game world, as well as a more fun take on the Tron-esque type world.

Also, the ending is a bit of a tear jerker, kind of in a Monsters Inc. way.

Indeed. Part of me feels unfair in doing those kinds of comparisons, but on the other hand, the "standing on the shoulders of giants" should mean that newer films have a better chance of getting to the same heights. Though doing that while avoiding feeling derivative is also a challenge.

Aliens just happens to be one of those films where everything clicks, literally everything. Cameron spent a lot of post-production time on sound effects instead of assisting James Horner with the score as much as possible. The score, while not being all Horner wanted it to be, is still superb and fitting. And the time instead spend on the pulse rifle sound... Oh boy is it worth it. Such a thick, pulsing, iconic sound.

They used a film stock which yielded a quite grainy result. However that also ended up working completely in their favor. This is not the film to use a low-grain anamorphic canvas. This feels gritty, lots of handheld stuff, and the spherical process makes things undistorted and more intimate, it doesn't feel like there's a lens in the way, unlike anamorphic (especially around the time period where anamorphic could look very soft).

Perfect casting. Visual Effects are perhaps not 100% convincing all the time, especially in remastered high definition, but it's still designed to well that one can only marvel at the thought and time and care taken with all the matte paitings, miniatures, and practical FX.

That sentry gun sequence is still one of the most bang-for-your-buck tense sequences made, there's barely an alien visible in that sequence. It's all in the acting, sound, and short glimpses of carnage.

If anyone is interested, there's a 3 hour documentary on youtube for it. Looks like someone compiled DVD supplemental material. It's an excellent document of the making of the film with lots of interviews and interesting trivia and behind the scenes stuff.

Re: Last movie you watched

Completely agree on Aliens, it's a perfect movie for me. It managed to be just as influential to military science fiction films as Alien became to atmospheric science fiction films, which is quite an impressive achievement for a sequel. And what a cast!

I might have to listen to WAYDM commentary again, for the umpteenth time. One of the best.

Re: Last movie you watched

Aliens was my favorite movie of all time for the longest time. That's changed over the years, but man is it an awesome piece of work, absolutely insane given the budget. I will say, on last viewing, it suddenly wasn't clicking for me the way I remembered, and all the marine banter started to feel uncomfortably close to some of the bad writing in Avatar. I'd like to give the Theatrical version a shot (I've basically always watched the extended), because as much as I like the sentry gun sequence, I do think a shorter run-time helps the movie, and that 1st hour in the extended cut starts to drag.

It does shock me how 30 years later, pretty much no-one has come close to matching the level of intensity of the final hour in Aliens. Video-games have imitated it to hell and back, but I can't think of any movies that have been able to match that relentless "everything is fucked we need to run" level of pacing and pull it off. T2 arguably, parts of The Descent, The Matrix maybe? Nothing feels like it matches up. That's crazy to think about for a movie that cost $16 million

Re: Last movie you watched

Agree with all the above. Aliens balances memorable characters, quotable dialogue, action, humour, suspense, horror, and an unparalleled escalation of tension in the final hour. As a sequel that both respects the first and expands the universe, it's rarely been done better. Given the limited budget and difficult working conditions with a British crew that wasn't taking Cameron seriously (he was only about 31!), it's an astonishing achievement. It's the only movie in the franchise with a single writer-director. As TechNoir said, the Superior Firepower 3 hour doco (even longer with the extra-extra supplements) is well worth watching.

I also recommend watching the movie with the James Cameron commentary.
Yeah, the rear projection and drop ship model don't quite hold up now. But what today's film-makers don't get is that fans would rather forgive the odd dodgy-VFX and have a strong story than the other way 'round.
I saw it in the cinema back in 1986 and it just freaked me out when they started coming out of the walls!

The Prestige with 1970s F1 drivers (based on a true story). Not my favorite Ron Howard movie, but still good. My only real quibble with it is that something felt weird about Chris Hemsworth's performance (it's hard to look at him and not see Thor, especially with that haircut).

Guardians of the Galaxy:

Finally got to see this film, and enjoyed most of it. I think I would have liked it more I had not known about Thanos and the Other from Avengers. Kind of pulled me out of the movie for a beat, but got back in to it pretty easily.

Loved the performances and Chris Pratt definitely has the Han Solo/Mal Reynolds/Jack Sparrow, done on his luck rouge character down. Had little tougher time with Bautista but it smoothed out by the end.

The world is probably the best part, and really enjoyed the different aspects of it, even as a redo of many familiar sci-fi trope. GotG has a charm and humor about it that takes it all in great stride, never super serious, but still built well enough for me to have an interest and a stake in the outcome.

It feels a little more multi-layered, partially due to the Marvel Universe build, and partially due to the fact that it does dump you in the middle of galactic goings-on, and doesn't hold your hand too much.

Lee Pace should be in everything.

Some HQ intelligent sci-fi. >90% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Great cinematography, production design, and VFX. Some interesting ideas, not all of them resolved. A good movie for after-credits conversation. The sequel could go all SkyNet or Species.

It overlaps with some themes from Blade Runner, Terminator, Her, Automata, The Machine, A.I., Black Mirror (Be Right Back), Transcendence, and I, Robot. It's difficult to say anything new in this well-mined topic.

Cross between Men in Black, Wanted, Austin Powers, sending up the Bond franchise with self-referencing jokes such as "This ain't that kind of movie".

We've been here many times before. Poor deadshit from broken home gets selected into elite spy unit.

Tonally, all over the shop. It's a soft R rating, with comical exploding heads, a clunker of an anal sex joke, and some refreshing class argy-bargy.

I didn't laugh out loud, but it had some jaw-dropping action scenes for those of us used to the usual PG13 fare.

Rating: moderately recommended.

One of the earliest movie franchises by Marvel. I'm not much into vampires, but Blade's approach to the bloodsucker genre works fine for me (especially when compared to crap like Twilight). Blade was wearing shades and a trenchcoat before The Matrix made this kind of garb popular wink
