I do enjoy Wing Commander for the badness, but the one thing that stuck out to me was the aliens (don't ask me to recall their names-I never played the game). I just never bought them as a villain.
Beyond that, it was ok sci-fi action.

Faldor, that's great! I was laughing at all of Owen's GL impressions on the two commentaries.
Edit: For BDA, just in case
The dinos were ok, but really were not allowed to do much. Also, I get tired of people in peril because of *reasons* to add drama. There were tinges of man trying to assert dominance over the dinos that could be seen as the "control" theme from JP, and in that, I credit JW.
In short, JW felt more like a first draft of a potentially excellent film, but just was very shallow, with only a couple of original ideas that I liked. But, the tone and style was similar enough to JP that I felt like it was more a spiritual sequel to the original than LW or JP III were.
Oh, that's what that is.
Thanks for sharing the process. Was wondering what the pics on Facebook were.
Honestly, it looks good. It reads like a news paper (in a positive way) and is very simple to navigate.
I do agree with Teague on the gray on gray coloring, just for reading ease. Navigation, though (which is something I think is very important) is quite easy.
Given the couple of other trope inversions that the film did, I'm kind of surprised by the way the scene played out, given that Claire couldn't be bothered to be with her nephews at the start of the film, only to become very maternal over the rest of the film.
Also, I know it's supposed to cement Owen as an heroic character, but he's really done enough already to merit that, so lets not augment that with the kids choosing him.
Oh well, as dumb moments go in this film, that was hardly the worst offender.
Download!
(I've actually watched the film being discussed!)
Edit: Well, don't everyone talk at once
I have not had the chance to to download many of the episodes, but recently binged a little bit for the Star Wars commentaries, and Jurassic World.
TPM commentary was a lot of fun, and it was nice to have a different perspective expressed in audio. Even after several years of hearing various opinions on Star Wars this one was a lot of fun.
AOTC is next!
Evolution is hilariously goofy and weird and a lot of fun.
It definitely was one of my group of friends' favorites in high school. I think the scene of the three of them taking down the alien in the shopping mall is among my favorite films scenes of all time.
I want to see the new sex scene.
"OK, Kyle, you have to ejaculate in me at exactly 7:56:23 for John to be born! I've set the alarm!"
Isn't that scene from "She's having a baby"?
Stop joking about things like that! Hollywood is listening!
Jurassic World.
My one blockbuster visit for the summer (maybe) and I had a pretty good time. It felt somewhat predictable, but I kind of expected that so that is ok, I guess.
Chris Pratt is a lot of fun, and provides a bit of a different take on the dinosaurs that I really enjoyed. He has good chemistry with the female lead, as well as with Vincent D'Onofrio.
Rest of the review is spoiled just as a precaution. If you liked other Jurassic Park films, you'll probably enjoy this one.
But, you didn't come here to read about the score did you? Of course not. You came to hear about the dinosaurs.
I'll say this. I liked the dinosaurs, and what they did with them. It was a fascinating way to take the world and consequences of the previous films, and craft it in a way that feels for the most part believable. I've heard it stated that the dinosaurs feel CG, but, aside from a couple of specific parts, I didn't get that impression.
There is a great undercurrent of understanding nature and nurture, and the instincts that can be developed, and the ones that lie beneath the surface. Chris Pratt's character (Owen?) is by and far the most interesting because he has a whole different view on the dinosaurs, than everyone else on the island.
Likewise, D'Onofrio has a different point of view on the dinosaurs, and he has a good point. However, much in the way that the first Jurassic Park film underestimated the level of human control, so this film establishes that the control the humans think they have is in error.
Claire, the park runner and operations officer, is fun and interesting, and has a good variety of moments that make her both fallible and heroic. Her chemistry with Pratt is great, and the two definitely serve as an interesting tug-of-war of perspectives on the dinosaurs.
The rest of the characters are hit and miss for me. There is a control room coworker "couple" (in the sense that they work side by side and play off each other) who sometimes serve as a bit of self-aware humor for the film. They have some good jokes, and trope reversal moments, and are fun.
The kids are frustrating. They definitely play as siblings, because in one minute they are fighting and the next they are working together despite their differences. The problem is that their tension is surface level, and even with the underlying subtext of their personal life in turmoil, they still don't feel like they actually deal with anything. They go through a crisis, think their aunt is cool again, the end.
The owner of the park is a likeable enough guy that doesn't get enough screen time and meets an untimely end. He really could have been more interesting if they felt like they could give him more to do.
The story is, unfortunately, fairly predictable. the only differences being that Pratt has been training the raptors, and the park developed (genetically engineered) a dino who turns out to be too much to handle. Unfortunately, the movie treads too heavily on the concept that are hero is really the only competent one, and the rest of the park employees are either too dumb or something to handle a crisis.
The ending is epic, and well done. The battle is such that there really is a feeling of the unknown of who might win and who might lose.
Overall, the visuals are fun, the story is basic, and Pratt's character carries a lot of the weight. I'm sure many will enjoy it.
Recently rewatched one of my childhood family favorite movies:
Baby's Day Out:
This movie is an absurd premise, taken to 11, and I love all of it. You do have to buy in to the premise, and it is a lot of slap stick humor, but it is such a fun film that I love it for the absurdity of it all.
It features an incredible cast with Lara Flynn Boyle, Joe Mantega, Joe Pantoliano, Fred Thompson, and Cynthia Nixon.
If you want a fun movie, enjoy this one
SF Debris manages to get away with it by being on Blip, and he has done a variety properties he explores.
However, I know he moved away from YouTube because any number of things could flag a copyright for ridiculous reasons.
"Seriously guys, come to Idaho."
"..guys?"
"...anybody?"
[ red-tailed-hawk_001.wav ]
I am sad now...thanks, Teague
It was an apartment fire. Do you not have those in Idaho?
Apologies if that's because there aren't any apartments in Idaho. I'm sure it has many nice features.
A...part...ment. Not sure what you mean.
Also, we have water...so there.
Every time I hear "LA Fires" on the news, I get worried.
Seriously, guys, come to Idaho, or at least Washington. It's closer to Canada, just in case too
Hey, my friends, my wife stumbled upon on a film description called "Black and White: A Love Story" but I cannot find copies of it any where. IMDB page: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0279694/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
Are there any (legitimate) means to find it?
I'm probably going to have to read that again because that was a lot.
I'll mention in passing that I am amused by your comment regarding older games because I recently got in to a discussion on another board about Star Trek, and someone compared enjoying newer Trek series vs. TOS to liking modern games versus older platforms. The poster could barely tolerate one game on SNES, while I love playing things like Intellivision games on X-Box and the like because I love the gameplay.
I have no skin in modern gaming because I frankly don't have the time or money to keep up with it. I don't like all the scripted events, but I'll admit to enjoying the Fallout series now and might revisit the older ones just because they are fun. Which, is what games are all about, IMHO.
I do like the idea of the light-saber being aware of what's inside you before you're aware of it though. That's usually an interesting kind of trope to play with.
I agree, and I think it would have worked if that had been established early on, because it really is a fun trope to have in a fantasy setting.
I just think it would have been odd in this film or the PT without some sort of preestablishment within the context of the world.
I'm never really cared for this new universe. It doesn't look like Star Wars at all. More like Mass Effect.
Still, this trailer is incredibly gorgeous. Blur outdid themselves this time.
I honestly only care for it because I like seeing the Republic and the Jedi at closer to the height of their power, but not complete morons like in the PT.
TOR era is still kind of boring to me, just because there are some rehashes of ideas, but the trailers just amaze me.
Get rid of the "s" from "https" when pasting a YouTube link to get it to work right.
I saw the Ares trailer before Jurassic World, looked good but yeah, definitely is of the more "show the whole movie" variety. I gotta run, will check out that video later.
I did that but it still wouldn't work. I probably had 3 or 4 edits to try and make it work, and modifying the address to no avail.
Oh well.
It feels like Star Wars: The Old Republic is going down GoT territory a little. In either case, I love the concept and design behind it all.
Edit: url because video tag is making me mad!
Also, I honestly can't think of a way to make that play without entering immediately into melodrama territory.
I mean...even more melodrama territory.
Thank you for clarifying yourself there, sir
Star Wars has enough magic in it without adding in a darkening of the aura, or however they would describe.
Not to be derisive of either properties, but the notion reminds me of an idea from an anime, Madoka Magika (and apologies if I got the title wrong). There is the idea of a soul gem that can darken as the person gets closer to giving in to despair. I feel like if Star Wars did that with sabers, it would feel like that, and wouldn't feel like it works in the world.
I watched that when I was younger.
Quite traumatizing at some points
Absolutely a must see if you have not seen it. Glad it is still around
Just finished reading up on Fourth Dimensions and Tesseracts as part of scifi world building.
Does that count?
Seriously, if you are wanting to write science fiction. Atomic Rockets is a fun site to cruise. This is the article I was reading (with pictures and everything!): http://www.projectrho.com/public_html/r … hp#2.2.2.2
