I'll weigh in and mention that the main barrier to a lot of modern technological applications wasn't knowledge and ideas, but instead metallurgy and manufacturing. People have know about things like electricity and steam power for a long time, they simply couldn't apply them to something practical until people figured out how to create stronger and better materials with greater precision then was possible back then.

I still don't understand why they decided to go with classic arcade games of all things, it seems like it clashes with the style of the rest of the game. However, I like classic arcade games, so I put some money down. I do wish that the space minotaur shirt wasn't $115, cause I want it, but I don't $115 want it.

That's a good point, but on The Cowboys it didn't bother me that they hadn't read the book. Here, I think, is the difference: The commentary for The Cowboys mostly approaches the movie from the context of it being a western and thus them being knowledgeable about the book wasn't nearly as important as them being knowledgeable about other westerns. For Scott Pilgrim they spend a lot of time talking about the movie in the context of it being an adaption from a comic, so none of them having actually read the comic felt particularly egregious. They might have been able to avoid it by not talking about the comic at all, but being an adaption from a comic is a significant part of that film's identity, so avoiding talking about it probably would have felt really awkward.

Then again, as they've said what matters is how it holds up as a movie. That it's an adaptation doesn't matter one whit.

I don't think they did the movie a disservice by not reading the comic, I think they did the commentary a disservice by not reading the comic. The movie deserves most of what they give it, but the commentary could have benefited from the added context that the comics would have provided to their analysis.

I'm still kinda mad at them for doing the Scott Pilgrim movie without having a single person who'd read the comics on the panel. Instead they just kinda speculated about what the comics might be like the whole time and the commentary suffers for it.

Guys, I did the math, and I'm pretty sure James Cameron is a puppet controlled by Trey. He actually used a double to play himself during the making of The Abyss to allay suspicion. That's why he's not happy with "his" puppet work on that movie, it wasn't actually his!

Teague, this album better not turn out to be another Tydirium.

I'm not saying they should have added Nova, that would have been a mistake, but what they did do doesn't really work either, and as long as we're fucking up, I'd rather we got Nova. What would be better would be something along the lines of what Squiggly_P was suggesting. I also think it would have been fine to have some Nova Centurions flying around in the battle so if they do want to introduce Nova later it would make more sense. I think people are familiar enough with the Marvel universe by now that we can have some superpowered guys in the background without too much explanation.

I was pretty disappointed by the Nova Corps. They're supposed to be a galactic police and defense force with powers granted to them by the Nova Force (kinda like Green Lanterns). Instead we got fighter pilots who's ships link together into shitty space nets. Before they did their link up thing I was ok with it, I figured filmmakers (reasonably) didn't want to add a bunch more superheros to the movie, but then they did they turned into a wall and were almost completely useless. Why did we have to get that when we could have had this:

Dammit.

Thanos is a dick and no one likes him, even his adopted daughters, but he's powerful and scary so people do what he says, unless they have a way to protect themselves from him (like the MacGuffin orb).

Darth Praxus wrote:

Quite honestly, that whole subplot is the film's weakest link for me.

Agreed, and if they weren't trying to build up to the infinity gauntlet they could cut Thanos and most of this subplot from the film, and the film would probably be better for it. But Marvel's gotta Marvel, and as long as the rest of the movie is good I'm willing to put up with it.

I don't see how this plot is that complicated. MacGuffin orb is worth a lot of money, but it turns out that if the bad guy gets the MacGuffin orb, Bad Things will happen, so the bad guy must be stopped.

I've really been getting into documentaries ever sense Eddie started Documentality, so I thought I'd create a thread to talk about what documentaries we've been watching, recommend documentaries to each other, have some general documentary discussion, or whatever else might happen here.

To kick us off, I recently watched Bones Brigade, a documentary about six teenagers in the 80s who created a skateboarding team and when on to revitalize and reinvent skateboarding into what we know is as today, and became some of the greatest competitors the sport has ever seen.

This doc was great, I totally loved it. It manages to be very informative and still be completely accessible to someone who knows nothing about skateboarding. I went in with nothing and came out with a basic understanding of skateboarding, a lot more knowledge about the history of skateboarding, and massive respect for the guys who made it all happen. 5/5, would recommend.

Hey everyone.

I'm always looking for more feedback on these episodes as it's a passion project.  If you've listened to this episode, how do you rate it with the others?  Are there any documentaries or type of documentaries you'd like to hear about?

I didn't like this one as much as the previous ones, for what I think are a couple of reasons. One is that this topic doesn't hold as much interest to me as previous ones, which is fine. Another is that it feels like you used these docs as a frame to interview Jessica, and thus the podcast was more about her and the docs kinda fell by the wayside. While I'm sure Jessica is a very nice gal and worth interviewing, I'd rather the focus was more on the docs themselves.
A sub point to this is that previously when you guys talked about a doc, one of you would give a brief summary of the doc before you got too far into the discussion. This is super handy for someone like me who doesn't watch a lot of docs but likes to listen to you talk about them. In fact, most of the docs I've seen recently I saw because of this show and because the summary caught my interest enough to cause me to go watch it. Somehow those summaries didn't seem to happen this time and as a result I felt very lost for most of the discussion and still don't really know what either of these docs are about.

Just my two cents.

I'd like the leak we were promised 2 months ago.  big_smile

I know from experience that this seems to work. Although it apparently takes much longer than six months to make an album. wink I'll help you annoy him though, 'cause I rather enjoyed this.

I'm disappointed that you didn't record a bit with Trey and edit it onto the end so we could get his reaction and thoughts on the whole thing.

The discussion about mkeith's line return habits reminded me of when the whole forum was hard constrained to 600px wide. It was such a pain in the ass to read that I actually got off my ass and convinced Teague to let me fix it. Now I kinda wish it would stretch out to 1200px instead of just 1000, but then it wouldn't line up with the header all nice and that would bother me so I'd have to fix that too and it all starts to sound like more work then it's worth. Non of this is particularly relevant, but it looks like we're fairly off topic anyway.
