E.T. is one of those movies I don't go back to very often, but I have a good time when I do.  One of the things that sticks out at me from my last viewing is the score; this might be some of John Williams' best work, very moving.  On a personal historical note, I think I remember seeing this one at a drive-in!  I also used to think that movies were just stage performances that took place behind a screen, and I think seeing this at that drive-in was the "waaaait a minute..." moment for that particular belief.

^ That was fucking beautiful sir.

Not to turn this into a PC vs Mac thread, but as someone who grew up with PCs and only got his first Mac about four years ago, I'm very happy with the Pro line of Apple computers and won't be going back anytime soon.  Sure I run Windows 7 via Bootcamp, and it's a fine OS, but honestly I pretty much only have it to run games.  Sure there's a level of "Uncle Steve knows best" when it comes to what kind of hardware we can use (*cough* Bluray *cough*), but I prefer the stability of a system where the hardware and software are made to work together.  They're certainly not infalible, they have their issues once in a while, but on the whole I prefer it.

Oh, and if you're into building your own machines, here's a neat little gadget that lets you build one that will run OSX, Windows, and Linux.  Granted, you have to use compatible hardware, and you need copies of each OS, as well as a hard drive for each OS, but you can easily build a nearly equivalent Mac Pro level system that can run OSX natively without having to pay Apple's prices for one.  Since it can run Windows and Linux in the same vein it's like getting two or three machines for the price of one!

Thanks FixedR6; I was looking for a button, but found it under the Friends menu.  And thanks to Maul for setting up the group!

Um, ok, anyone found the "Add / Invite Friends" button for Steam?  Feeling a bit dim here.  FixedR6, how'd you invite me?

Here's one where I wish the game graphics were as good as the trailers.  For that matter, I'd love to see these guys make a feature length film.  This is the third and latest they've put out; worth watching in HD on YouTube.

I don't have a whole lot of editing experience, (a couple demo reels, cleaning up a video for YouTube, light stuff), so most of what Eddie is griping about is over my head.  I can speak to Apple's lowest editor though, iMovie.  Most of what is on my YouTube channel I did in iMovie HD, and without having to drive myself crazy just figuring out how to import a clip into the timeline.  The current version?  I have tried so many times to get a simple video of my nephew cut down to upload, and I cannot for the life of me figure the damn thing out.  Frankly, I've given up trying.

I got FCPS as part of my software package from Full Sail; from what you all are saying, I feel bad for newer students, as they'll likely be getting FCX.  So far we haven't done much with it, but I'm glad I have it.

I've had pretty good luck with Premier, and with project linking with AE and PS, it's my go-to for personal projects.

Played TF2 a few times, but never with anyone I knew.  Back when Steam first came to the Mac, Mac|Life had a group you could join and play on Fridays.  They dubbed it "Frag the Editor Friday," since it was typically the staff on one team and readers on the other.  Wouldn't mind giving it a go with folks I know, but I never really got into multiplayer games.

In case anybody's interested, you can find me on Steam as "niambo."  Maybe frag some zombies in L4D.

Glad someone mentioned the trailer.  I was working in a theater when this came out, and I remember seeing the teaser thinking I'd have to see that movie.

*Realizes you're working with what props you have.

If it's at all possible, the actor should bring the hammer to the rear before firing.  It appears the prop you have is "double action," meaning that pulling the trigger performs two actions: bringing the hammer to the rear, and releasing the hammer so the weapon can be fired.  The thing is double action is relatively new (say, mid 19th century), and no flint-lock system ever utilized one.  Weapons like that are "single action," meaning the trigger only performs one action: releasing the hammer.

In terms of the test, the flash at the ignition hole is occurring as the hammer is still coming back, instead of as it "strikes."  There should also be a slight delay between the strike and the weapon actually discharging (black powder is much "slower" than modern smokeless powder, so it takes longer to burn).  I'd add more smoke as well.  Here's some good reference.

Welcome back Jeffery, we've missed you 'round here.  I agree, it's not perfect, and if the consensus is indeed that this is a bad movie, then so be it, I don't care either.  Show me one guy (or gal, we have a couple around here now, Woot!) around here that doesn't have a guilty pleasure movie on his shelf, and I'll show you...well just show me one, consider it a dare.  I can't remember if I said as much in the show notes, (and I'm honestly too lazy to look it up), but between this and Pitch Black, I'm more likely to pop this one in.  Pitch Black is great, I really like it and if it comes on the t.v. I'll stop what I'm doing and watch it.  This has a real cinematic feel to it, while Pitch Black feels more like a Syfy movie.  Mind, that's not me dissing Syfy, just stating a preference.  I'm glad to be at a point as a film critic to be able to objectively say when a film doesn't work, but still be able to shelve all that and enjoy it if it worked for me.
