Hey all you wonderful DiFy people! As I'm sure some of you know, I've been working on my Demo Reel project for my 2nd year at Vancouver Film School. And I figure that if I have a forum full of VFX artists/filmmakers at my disposal I should try to pick your brains a bit. All at my own gain of course. But I'd really appreciate it. smile

So first thing, info dump.

Script

One Sheet

Animatic with Color Coding

Really Rough Proxy Design for Spaceship

Now questions!

Basically I'm looking for overall thoughts, comments, ideas, questions. Anything that will really help me make this thing amazing.

And I have a few specific questions, Trey could probably really help with this. I'm looking to shoot a lot of practical effects plates to comp in, the desert that the VTOL engines kick up from the desert, exhaust from the engines that kind of stuff. But I have never done ANYTHING like that before. Any little tips or tricks you can mention? What kind of stuff is really good for those kind of effects? (I managed to get the idea of compressed air and crushed walnut shell dust for kicked up dust from the Avatar Siggraph talk I went to) but outside that I'm sort of at a loss. I have ideas, but I thought I'd see what the experts have to say.

And this one is really broad and general but here goes. How do I ensure that this thing feels real? I've tried as much as possible to limit my shots and angles to very realistic camera moves, nothing crazy and wild. And I know a lot of it is going to come down my modeling and texturing (As my mentors have been so kind to mention a bazillion times) but what other little things should I keep in mind?

Alright, thats enough talking from me.

Thanks in advance, guys!

Eddie: Do you have a link for the Walter Merchant book you were talking about? The one with the list of importance in editing. 125 pages or so.

I poked around and couldn't find anything.

Cause fuck it, I'm to lazy to find the old one.

I tried changing the e-mail address for my account, but it won't let me.

EDIT: This is the error I got, and I'm getting it every time I make a post now too.

An error was encountered

Could not connect to smtp host "smtp.gmail.com:465" (111) (Connection refused).

Note: For detailed error information (necessary for troubleshooting), enable "DEBUG mode". To enable "DEBUG mode", open up the file config.php in a text editor, add a line that looks like "define('FORUM_DEBUG', 1);" (without the quotation marks), and re-upload the file. Once you've solved the problem, it is recommended that "DEBUG mode" be turned off again (just remove the line from the file and re-upload it).

Finally got around to watching this movie/ listening to the commentary. And first thing....really enjoyed the movie.

Secondly, when you guys were talking about Kaulders character motivation, and specifically it being missing. Bluntly put, did you just miss his line where (I believe in the train station) he literally fucking says "One of these days I'm gonna get one of my photos on the front page of one of your dads magazines."?

Otherwise, good commentary, enjoyed it.

According to Cameron's original treatment, Unobtainium is essentially the perfect electrical transmitter, zero loss of power and all other sorts of good stuff that modern scientists would certainly consider unobtainable. So yeah, thats basically his reasononing behind the name.

Also...

it's highly magnetic...and that makes the mountains fly..

I saw him today, intensely examining a Starship Trooper bug rig in a Cinefx mag that was lying open on a table at school.

Needless to say, one of the most ultimate double-takes of all time occurred shortly thereafter.

Your turn.

I've NEVER had a problem with headaches or any discomfort during a 3D movie and have never had an issue with paying an extra 3 bucks for the 3D, except when the movie was shit, in which case I would have been ticked off anyways.

So I really can't talk on either side of the issue.

My opinion is the same as Brian's, he just worded it better than I would have.

I've never heard of Capricorn One, but going from the IMDB tagline, at least that was about something hasn't happened at all. This (as well as Transformers) are making their buck on ACTUAL Apollo events.

As a sidenote I should should say, when I posted this I had just spent 45 mins trolling the IMDB list of movies coming out in 2011 and was feeling particularly bitter towards the entire industry. Still am actually.

EDIT: I should also say that regarding this paticualar movie, I was disgusted by the fact that it's listed as a horror/thriller. I have nothing against making movies about the apollo/Nasa missions (Ala From The Earth To The Moon or Apollo 13), as long as it isn't doing it as a cheap structure for a stupid B-movie plot thereby disgracing the memories of the people actual involved.
