My money is on the cavemen. They hunted hoofed animals with thrusting spears and wrestled them to death.

To this day, some Africans just run the critters down and wait for heat stroke. Then you can walk right up to them. The astronauts have sweat glands and can run as far as the cavemen.

Everything up to the Council of Elrond is utter shit.

No, i don't agree. I was struck by the 'old-fashioned-ness' of the language (at least the narrator didn't say 'presently' every other sentence like a lot of old books); and Tolkien obviously wrote the opening chapters for himself and didn't give a poop if the readers found them overly detailed or boring.

Songs, writing, detailed family trees - Tolkien lived there. He just wrote the books to share it all.

After the Council of Elrond, it gets pretty okay.

I hated Legolas. Basically all he says is "Oh haiy!" over and over.

But that one paragraph made the whole six-week reading worth it for me.

Ok i'll bite, which paragraph is it?

I bought the paperbacks just before the 1st movie came out, and... never finished them. They look nice in my bookcase. I listened to the audiobook (24hrs long) twice though, so there.

The Deadliest Warrior is a great concept but there's too much trash talking. I'm allergic to reality TV.

Doesn't get the respect it deserves, Alien 4. The failed Ripley clones; playing that 'kill me' clone was a ballsy thing for Sigourney Weaver to do; Ron Perlman doing the monkey knife throwing thing (remember he was in Quest For Fire, he could probably stay in ape-man character all day if he wanted to); um...

Ok there's a lot of crap too.

17yrs since the last Alien movie... it just ain't right, man.

I saw Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion and found it boring not deep. But it must be that i didn't get it because a lot of people love it.

All matter comes from the big bang. Over the years gravity formed that stuff into solar systems and galaxies. Asteroids don't come from exploding stars.

Damn, i'm trying to think of something... I know that Voyager doesn't deserve to be dissed the way it usually is. I'd rather watch an old Voyager or DS9 than a Stargate Atlantis. Well, i've never actually watched a whole one but i hated the few minutes i did see. So low budget!

Some random comments: About iron from the stars, i think there was plenty here already before life began. If you mean when the planet was forming then yeah, it came from the sun.

I'm nowhere near sick of space movies because the good ones are far and few between. Moon, Star Trek, WALL•E, Sunshine... that's only 1 or 2 a year.

2001: ASO is different because when heavy shit happens, the people will barely acknowledge it then move on as quick as possible, and get back to the small talk about the fake chicken sandwich. It added to the grandeur Kubrick was going for. The Fountain explores the hell out of feelings. But yeah, they're both trippy.

Does anybody know why they didn't let Aronofsky do a commentary? Even Mad Men gets 2 (lousy ones) per episode.

Another good one guys, lots of great info about the movie. Now, please explain Mulholland Drive to me. And how do magnets work?

I drove 50 miles to Ottawa in a blizzard to see Dune in 1984 and fell asleep during the movie, so i can totally understand why someone would hate it. But there are some great moments.

There's something funky about some movies around that time. ST: TMP, Excalibur, Dune. We'll never see big budget sci-fi movies with that kind of tone again unfortunately.

Oh yeah! Gonna be good! The scene near the end where he gets eaten by the tree, with the music etc, is very spinetingly for me.

I haven't seen it but i hear the crew had a good time:

"Wondering what the $150 million budget went into? We heard from a crew member on the set that Shyamalan had actually built a fancy-ass bar, on set, for the crew’s drinking needs."

I watched A:TLA episode 1 season 1, is the rest of it the same or does it change?

'Hatred'? But they don't know any better. Maybe i hate their ancestors for setting them on that path but the fat blobs are innocent. The fact that they're so quick to change makes me like them. Don't hate the blobs, man.

You didn't watch this one by mistake, did you? wink

Sure he made billions (in stock) and he's now he's on the Disney board but it's not the same as the Apple thing. In '97 Apple was a disaster and everyone wanted Steve to take over, plus he had something to prove.

Lasseter's a creative type so he'll never run Disney, and Steve'll have his hands full as Apple keeps getting bigger. And don't forget his health.

Top 5 bizarre stories you've experienced second hand. Not necessarily sexual, since there's no way we're topping Eddie.

1)  Shooting heroin in Pulp Fiction. It looked so cool! Just don't snort it.
2)  The simstim rig in Neuromancer. This i wouldn't mind trying.
3)  Watching race car drivers from onboard cameras. I am really reaching here.
4)  In Hyperion by Dan Simmons there's this priest who got infected by a parasite that kept him prisoner at a certain place and brought him back to life if he killed himself, so eventually he crucified himself in a place where he was continually hit by lightning. They found him years later, burnt to a crisp but alive. They cut him down, that got the parasite off and he finally died.
5)  That girl they found last year who was kept prisoner and had 2 kids by that guy.

Next: Top concert dvd's. Some i like are Devo: Live 1980 and Rush in Rio.

Feel free to answer 1 or 2 and pass it on if you don't have all 5.

1. The Incredibles
2. Wall•e
3. Toy Story.  Funny and clever and a hell of an acomplishment CGI-wise. Remember the big deal made about Terminator 2's CGI only 4yrs earlier?
4. Finding Nemo
5. Toy Story 2.  Pretty much as good as TS1.
6. Ratatouille.  Looks beautiful and has some of the best animation of any Pixar movie but Linguini's too retarded.
7. Monsters, Inc
8. Up.
9. Cars.  When i saw the 1st teaser trailer i thought 'uh oh this is gonna be awful'. Then when Steve Jobs sold the damn company i thought 'he's selling before this flop comes out'. But i liked it ok.
10. Toy Story 3.  Just watched it. Meh. I didn't feel the fun and wonder from the 1st one. Nice ending.
11. A Bug's Life

Black Rain.
Ridley Scott was still in 'Blade Runner mode' with the smoke, etc. Sorta-kinda a remake of The Yakuza from the '70s. I like the acting - it isn't natural, they're going for a thing but it works babe. Kinda cheesy, a little racist - the opposite of the original - but great. Andy Garcia was supposed to be a big star from this but he never really did. And that Café Racer... drool.

The Blue Brothers.
You know this one. Great music, car chases. Dan Aykroyd being funny by playing it 'serious', what he does best.

And some more animated movies would be nice, i like Perfect Blue and the 1st Patlabor movie a lot. Maybe some of your favorite TV show episodes too.

I don't want to sound greedy though, whatever DiF does is cool by me.
