Which I already pointed out two posts ago. You're not getting away with this one
Is being spot on really the point here? The 80s are the basis for this kind of aesthetics, just like it is for music like Perturbator's or games like Hotline: Miami, but in the end it creates something new, some sort of modern cheesy, kitsch genre. It pays tribute to the 80s without actually trying to recreate it. I think it's brilliant and hilarious, and people actually alive in the 80s shouldn't feel as if the younger generations were trying to appropriate it.
As to Kung Fury... I'm actually impressed. I didn't know they'd managed to gather such resources. The style makes post-production work easier, but there's a lot more CGI and animation than I expected. A lot of work went into polishing the look of it.
I tip my hat to the one-liners jokes. They got quite a few good chuckles out of me.
So sorry to hear it. The only thing I can do is offer my sincere condolences to John and his family. I hope they'll be okay.

Illuminating interview (with breakdowns) of Iloura VFX supervisor Tom Wood, who shows that there was in fact a massive amount of post-production, but not necessarily where one would expect it.
EDIT: Another great technical article, with overall VFX supervisor Andrew Jackson: http://www.fxguide.com/featured/a-graph … fury-road/
The movie ends up with about 2,000 VFX shots, but there's virtually zero full CG shots.
“You shoot the layout and vehicles and gradually everything might get replaced,” he says, “except the camera and the positions of where things were. You may end up with nothing left of what was actually filmed, but the shot still inherits something real from the plate you shot originally. I still believe it’s worth doing for that reason.”
And with this state of mind, I think the movie deserves its practical reputation. It feels grounded in reality, and apart from the CG guitar shot, everything feels grounded in reality.
EDIT: Holy cow, the guitar and steering wheel coming up to the camera are not CG either. Weird.
BTW, in case people haven't watched this yet, this 2 hour talk with the cinematographer is extremely illuminating about the craziness of the production: https://vimeo.com/127381179
Amazing talk. Thanks for the link, I really love these behind the scenes stories.
I think even without knowing anything about Mad Max, the movie works. So maybe it avoided exposition because it's a well-known franchise, but the result is the same: the movie works on its own.
So I'm gonna go ahead and agree with Herc that Mad Max: Fury Road is on the same level as Die Hard. I think it has the same re-watchability. Everything about it works.
The only shot that didn't scream "PERFECTION" was the guitar one, which was too obviously CG. Otherwise, it was two hours of insane action, pacing, acting, and my God, what eye-candy. Not many movies can pull off that much saturation. This one is off the chart, and it looks incredible.
And to know pretty much everything is real... Holy shit. I'm going to need a 10-hour documentary of this. How they didn't destroy dozens of cameras filming this, I'd like to know.
PS: fuck theaters who think it's good idea to have the sound too loud for every single movie ever, but when it's Mad Max, the one movie that NEEDS to be too loud, it's too quiet.
Well, I think I'm gonna stop here.
If I went on, it would probably take me to something like Christmas.
I know. Doesn't mean EU laws don't exist, they just don't apply to you
I don't know whether that changes anything to Canon, though. The 30-second limitation seems worldwide.
There are common laws that all European Union members apply. That's kinda the point of having an European Union, really.
EDIT : turns out Sam just might be right about the 30-minute limit: Why Digital Cameras Have a 30 Minute Video Recording Limit.
Thank God we have a banana for scale.
Wow, awesome news.
Two former students from my school are now music video directors. They just released the video they made for french artist Martin Mey:
Really liked it.
I'd argue that everything is on topic now.

Subforums are cool. You could have a general "Community activity" category, with all the ongoing activities as its subforums. If an activity ceases to be a thing, its subforum can go - doesn't have to be deleted, it can be archived in an "Archives" category. I might be wrong, but moving subforums around probably isn't a pain in the ass with forum systems such as PunBB.
Samantha Cristoforetti's pictures from the ISS
I'm out of words. This is beyond beautiful.
Eluvium is a guy who makes ambient music. He mixes different approaches to it, but every once in a while, he just goes with a simple piano track. And this particular one, I can't get enough of. If I want to listen to something soothing that makes me forget about everything, I'll go straight with Caroling. It's so simple, and yet it's one of the most beautiful piano pieces I've ever heard.
I've never been in a metal band, and I don't really want to be in Lord of the Rings.
Eat it, nerds.
It goes without saying that I really, really can't wait for the result of all this.
Work with a camera. The amount of detail you need will solely depend on what you see, and you'll decide whether you need to add detail on the model or if bump and specular maps will do (and they do more often than you'd think).
Oh, by the by. August 2017:
There's no way I'm passing this up.
I was lacking a place to share my photography wanderings.

Ya, I thought I could do some more recordings, but I don't have anything remotely close to free time right now. I'll send you the guitar stuff soon, but that's all you'll be getting from me, unfortunately.
I posted way back when S2 started why I hated S1. Mostly the never-ending assholery of characters even when they wanted or needed something from the person they were talking to. Also: random betrayals. There's a reason why, in real life, people made and fulfilled feudal ties: they are good for business.
I'm guessing the simplification they had to do from the books to the TV show leads to this randomness. The characters still do what they have to do, but we haven't spent 50 pages understanding why they would do it.
Personally, I used to like the show a lot despite the boob time and other money-driven nonsense... and then I got progressively bored with it. The production value is enormous, the acting is just fine... but the directing is dull. When you've read the books, and thus lose the cliffhangery nature of almost everything's that's happening, not much is left. Most of the important spoilery scenes left me with "Oh, ok well that happened". This show just doesn't even try to keep me on the edge of my seat. It goes from one scene to another without much feeling.
I realize also that the universe they built in the show itself has this dullness. The books are gritty, but feel way more fantastical in nature. I really want to hear about old Valyria and the Targaryen lineage from the novels. The TV show version would be like reading about Charlemagne in some history book. Informative, but not very magical.
I'll probably keep watching it, if only for the fact that it looks gorgeous most of the time. That, and characters such as Tyrion I really like to see on screen. Since the show is gradually deviating from the books, it might spark some new interest, but I'd really appreciate it if they actually tried to convince me that what's happening is incredible.
Despite having a moustache Saniss always manages to look effortlessly cool. Smug git.
It's the guitar. Gotta be the guitar.
1. Saniss, I love you.
No, I love you. Everyone just drop it, Teague has done the entire cover by himself.
Phi > You could try reducing the files with Handbrake. This thing is powerful as hell. I've managed to get 1gb files down to 50mb with virtually no noticeable quality loss.
Got some guitars recorded tonight.
Yeah, I've got a Portal t-shirt too (as well as some other stuff I might use for further recordings). And... the same Game of Thrones poster as Boter, I guess?
