This was my term 4 large project, a 3 minute "horror" film, limited to 13 shots, and completed, concept to final render in just under 2 months.

We did ours all green screen...we're masochists...what can I say?

My specific jobs on this project was; I wrote the bloody thing and was one of two 3D artists . Specifically I built and textured: All the experiments, the tubes, both hallways and the space station.

So without further ado, enjoy.

Original?

And alright I guess fair enough, if you want to go so far as comparing to the actual myths of ancient Greece, I will agree with you. But I think within the confines of this movie, Hades works. Although i would actually really like to see a completely faithful translation from original myths to this type of format, see the gods kicking some serious ass, and raping a shitload of women... you know that's actually one thing that surprised me about this Clash, for a Greek myth, there was a surprising lack of sex/rape, I guess they didn't want to completely turn the audience against the gods hmm

And I've always had a problem with any portrayal of Hades as a straight up maniacal evil dude.  Guy was more emo than anything.

So wait a minute, you are legitimately going to try and tell me that being stabbed in the back by your brother, forced to live/work in the underworld for eternity and a day and live on nothing but the hatred and fear of humanity isn't enough motivation for Hades to go batshit evil?

And honestly I loooooved how they portrayed Zues, and all of the gods really (Even though the other ones didn't really get any screen time, but hey, this isn't their myth). I once heard someone complaining about how vibrant and healthy (AKA Young) the gods looked, I believe thier specific line was "Arn't they like a million years old?". Now you can blame that on me just having stupid friends or whatever. But I loved how everything was handled, it's what the Ancient myths and stories of epic tales deserve to have.

No dude, I am right there with you. Although this is coming from someone who also enjoyed Clash of The Titans...and apparently a bad person for liking that one too.

Just got back from Clash of Titans, (which I enjoyed immensely, thank you very much) and apparently they're remaking the A-Team...and it looked Bad....ASS!! Although having never seen the original, I can't bitch and whine about how they're ruining the original, but I'm someone on here can fill that void rather quickly.

And also apparently they made Guardians of Gahoole into an animated flick, this excites me, although I don't remember alot about the books, I do remember reading them...and enjoying them.

I'm intensely psyched to hear what you guys have to say on this one. I have had...shall we say...heated discussions with a few people of the merit of this paticular film. And I know this is gonna be another one of those ones where I am literally screaming at my computer for 3 hours (Yes Star Trek, I'm lookin at you).

I may just have to push my DVD purchase ahead of schedule for this.

And yes I saw it 5 times in theaters. All in 3D. Sue me, why don't cha. Although in my defense I only had to pay for the extra 3 bucks for the 3D on them.

Also btw, they're remaking Karate Kid... with Jackie Chan.

Or perhaps my explanation from earlier was correct, and Starfleet isn't based solely off the American military style. Go figure eh? Sci-fi taking inspiration from something outside of the States...weird. tongue

Oh, but wait. On the four-year, three-year thing I just remembered: McCoy is a raw recruit too, just like Kirk. But he's in the same class as Kirk and Uhura and the rest by the time three years elapse. Which means McCoy also "did it in three."

In my best Hermes voice I exclaim, "Dat just raises furder questions!"

Techincally...no. We never truly find out what graduating class anyone is in, because well, no one graduates, they all get shipped off to the Enterprise before that can happen. So for all we know Mccoy could be graduating a year after Kirk, or hell, Kirk could not even be graduating this year. I don't "think" they ever explicitly state that Kirk "actually" did it in 3 years, thats just what he says to Pike.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's how I remember it.

As far as the field trip out, I guess I just don't know enough about military protocol or how this shit works. (Ala Cadets vs plebes vs etc etc.)

But they Pike does say that the shuttle for "New Recruits leaves tomorrow." Which is the one he takes which does have all the other cadets on board.

Trey: From what I understand the boy he drives and waves at on the road is his brother. And supposedly, according to Abrams, the guy on the phone is his uncle.

And as far as knowing, we don't, at all for either of them.

On another note, just because I like a little chaos, I want to throw this out there.

What in THIS MOVIE gives any indication that Starfleet hierarchical system is in anyway at all similar to any system we know or recognize?? Yes i know that whatever, you have your own ideas of what a military system looks like, but fuck that. What in THIS MOVIE gives you any indication that this is abnormal or out of the ordinary?? Cause no one else seems to mind.

Discuss.

And on a separate more closely related to what I actually think, note.

I forget who said it, and I'm too tired to go check. But someone said something about them being on there own, god only knows where without back up or support and how that changes the situation. I agree. So thats all now think back, Pike KNOWS WHO KIRK IS, when he meets him in the bar (After the bar tender tells him, but still, he's got a repuatation). Thats big dudes. Pike seems to have a certain connection with Kirk that transcends Teacher/Cadet. And don't you think that would carry through the Academy? I'm sure Pike kept a very close eye on Kirk throughout his schooling, and saw something he liked (Kobiyashi Murru anyone? I know I spelt that wrong, shut the fuck up). So when he's in a sticky situation, he wants someone who can get the job done, enter Kirk. Bam, Pike promotes him and the story continues. So in the end Kirk is not the only one breaking a few rules.
I think this makes alot of sense, but unforunatly it isn't really portrayed this way in the movie. How would we fix this? fairly simply really, all it would take would be a few short scenes of Kirk at the Academy impressing Pike and them establishing this sort of a relationship so that when we get to the end it makes sense why Pike would promote him over someone else on the ship.

And all of a sudden, all we have is McCoy breaking a few rules to get Kirk on board (If you notice, Kirk was just going to stay behind as far as we know, it's Mccoy that sneaks him on board, Kirk just goes along with it.), it's Pike that breaks the rules to promote him over someone else, and then Kirk just assumes the position he's required to when Spock steps down. Fairly reasonable I would think, as far as his accension to power goes.

Alright I am ready for the massive hail of hate that's sure to arise...bring it on.

Jeffery Harrell wrote:

Hell, I'm still bothered by the fact that a bunch of cadets were hanging out in a bar a thousand miles away from campus for absolutely no reason other than so Jim Kirk could meet them.

I actually have an answer for this one!

You seem to be forgetting that this particular bar is no more than a stones throw away from where the cadets will be leaving for basically what amounts to military school the next day and not to mention a massive Starfleet shipyard. Perhaps you can explain why a group of young cadets stuck in some bumhick town with one night of freedom left, wouldn't find the nearest bar and live it up. Keeping in mind that this is a bumhick town, there probably is only the one bar, which we are led to believe Kirk frequents quite a bit. So that takes care of him. Next up, Pike.
We are led to believe that Pike is a fairly intelligent man who's been around Starfleet for a while, you don't think he might want to check in on his newest recruits, juuuuuust in case what happened happens? And hell there's only one bar, so it won't take to long.

Decent enough for you?

Okay, I know plenty of fanboys, like my friend Ryan Schile who do like it a lot, for whatever reason. So that's the first hole in your premise.

Secondly, you're basically making an appeal to authority. "Well, Spock likes it so why don't you?" And as much as I respect the character of Spock and Leonard Nimoy as an artist, that doesn't mean I'm always going to agree with either of them.

Further, we don't know what Nimoy's specific feelings about the story are. Whatever it is, I'm sure his opinion is more complicated than a thumbs up or thumbs down.

I never said anything about this applying to everyone equally, but I get what you mean.

Secondly i never said anything about this being the rule and must be followe, I simply find it interesting.

And no I am not making an appeal to authority, I am saying that this guy, who has basically lived breathed and been Star Trek for nearly forty years, has played a major role in the development of it's exsistence so if anyone is going to be able to speak about whether or not it's "Trek" enough, it would be him. And from what I've read/heard/seen, he seems to think so. Which I find INTERESTING... note that. i never said you had to agree with him.

I just find it interesting that the fanboys can talk for hours on end about what Trek "is" or should be while simultaneously dissing Abrams Trek, which Nimoy thinks is a good representation.

And while we may not know for absolutely definitely sure what his thoughts are, like i said, I am just going from what he has said in interviews and the like, and also going from my opinion that he isn't likely to spend his time on a Star Trek project and invest this much in it, of his own free will, if he didn't think it represented Trek well.

So I guess in the end, I can ask, what makes you think you know what makes Trek, Trek, than a man who has had a key role in making Trek, Trek?

(Yes, I am being a touch of a douchebag here, but I'm just trying to make a point.)

I read something this morning that sparked something I had forgotten about til now.

I find it interesting that the so called 'hard-core" fans (Ala, Brian) are so incredibly against this film because of well...all the the reasons Brian handily pointed out. Yet in every single interview Mr. Nimoy has ever had, not to mention the fact that he agreed to be in the fucking thing, he praises Abrahm's Star Trek as a reviving of the franchise. Now personally I hold a lot of respect for Mr. Nimoy as an artist and as a person, so I find it highly unlikely that he is simply saying this as a measure of Hollywood politics or bullshit like that, I think he genuinely means it.

I'm not sure exactly what to make of it, but I find it interesting that one of the original cast members and someone who has seen and had a large part in the formation of this franchise, seems to like the movie, yet the fanboys can't seem to get to get it together.

Alright, well i think you guys have officially ruined Star Trek for me, but not in that happy "Yah I know more about movies!" kind of way. But more in the I can't see this movie without hearing voices bickering in my head locked in an eternal state of argument of the hardcore classic Trekkie and the new modern audience. Where neither will give ground and neither makes any progress. And all you get is an eternal loop of bickering voices in my head.

Sorry guys, but that's a lot of what I heard for most of this. And after a while it just came down to Brian = extremist religious leader preaching the word of the almighty book of Classic Trek and everyone else is the rest of the world going, "You do realize this is kinda bullshit right?"

(Sorry to use the religious metaphor, but it was really the way I kinda came to see this dynamic as the commentary played out.)

I still don't know what to think of the commentary, it's gonna take a bit to digest, but having just finished it... that's my gut reaction.

On the topic of the actual movie; the insanely epic post a while back about everything wrong with Star Trek (2009) did not manage to dissuade my opinion of it, and I don't think you guys did either. I still love the fuck outta this movie, and yes I get it's not perfect, but then I go it's fukin Star Trek and I'm cool with it. I'd much rather have this than everyone wandering around for hours on end explaining the intricacies of red matter to me in a completely fictional techno babble that really has no impact on the story whatsoever and which means absolutely nothing to me. TNG gave us that, and well, that's why I don't watch TNG. Give me some character growth any day.

So in short.... Brian... you're wrong.
