I... I started to read that, but realized I couldn't, due to the format and an extreme absence of punctuation and capitalization.

Apologies if you're not, but am I right in assuming you wrote all that while drunk?

Relevant to the topic itself: I like Jaws 2. The scene with the kid trying to hold onto the boat so hard, he takes a piece of it with him after getting pulled under water is intense and disturbing. smile

I'm mentioning it. I like Return to Oz. Though it is a sequel, it's a sequel to the book, and is way more faithful to Baum's material. Also, the main child character is actually played by a child (gasp!), and (most importantly) nobody breaks into fucking song!

You know what film I wouldn't mind seeing an update of? Miracle Mile. Now, I love that movie, but it is quite dated, and the limitations of that period (both in budget and technology) prevented that film from reaching its full potential. I'm thinking someone like David Koepp could write and direct, as he's handled similar themes and ideas (The Trigger Effect, which I'm also a fan of).

What say you, DiF chat?

maybe something, I don't know, closer to the games?

Tysto and I actually recently did a commentary for the first film in that series. It'll be out on October 3rd at his site.

I am one of those rare beings who actually likes the film and the games as separate forms of entertainment. I was very surprised when Milla Jovovich announced on her Twitter feed that she was packing to travel for the next film's shoot.

I would be curious to see another take on the material, closer to the events of the game. I read George Romero's original script for Resident Evil. Not bad, but I get why the studios decided not to run with it.

I'd imagine someone like James Gunn could do well with it, although the second game (which takes place in a police precinct) is my favorite in the series, so I'd rather see that.

I wanted to bring that up, especially because of your comments in the chat, which didn't go unnoticed. (That all sounds more ominous than I mean, I'm just saying I wanted to hash that out with you because I was a seein' what you were a sayin.')

I might have the wrong brain in my head for what we should call a commentary, but they've never really been...commentary-commentaries, in my mind, they've never been truly meant to be listened along with the movie. At least not for a while, not since the early teen episodes, where we learned nobody actually did that. It's been conversation on a theme - the movie of the week - and usually tangents on that theme as well. So when we go off on a conversation about what Planet Terror is and how it succeeds, and what Death Proof is and how it does or doesn't, that seems to me just as interesting and related, and not to mention semi-required context building for other comments we'll make about the movie itself.

Now, if this was a commentary-commentary, that kind of thing would be ridiculous, but as the show is almost always a podcast for 99% of the audience, it works for me and I let it go that way if the tangent is interesting. Theory talk, abstract talk, what IS Planet Terror DOING, and what else has done that.

I guess me question is...no? Not this? In your opinion?

I get what you're saying. Don't get me wrong, the discussion was still good, just misplaced, let's say. During the Tarantino and Death Proof talk, I kept thinking, "Gosh, this is great stuff, but it would make a hell of a lot more sense to be going on DURING Death Proof." When you guys get around to Death Proof, now my concern is going to be for repetition and redundancy, like, "They said all of this already, during that other movie that isn't this one."

And then of course there's the talk about the Western genre and various movies in it, which for me felt more appropriate for an Intermission podcast, or an actual Western movie, but I digress. Just like Zarban, I also try to watch the movie while listening to the commentary, save for a few exceptions (Phantom Menace, Hook, Monster's Inc., Galaxy Quest, The Princess Bride, Wanted, Harry Potter and A Few Good Men). Given that a movie only runs for so long and certain scenes play out that warrants discussion (which serves to justify watching the movie while you're talking), time is of the essence. I mean, if it's just going to be more of a theme-based discussion and less scene-specific, then why do a running commentary at all? Why not just do a casual, weekly movie review show?
SHAMELESS PLUG! http://www.geekshow.us/category/content … -geekshow/

All this is to say I ultimately enjoyed the episode. It's not like I'm saying it should be scrapped and redone. Not at all. I just personally prefer commentaries to have more focus on the material that's being viewed.

To paraphrase a line from Ghostbusters: "Don't cross your eyes. Crossing your eyes would be bad. Very, very bad."

I strongly recommend Christopher Smith's, Triangle (released on DVD in 2010, thus making it my favorite film of that year, stealing the top spot from Inception).

I also suggest Ti West's, House of the Devil. It's a delightful throwback to horror movies of the early 80s'. It's shot on 16mm film stock and even has old school credits.

You could also do the original Fright Night from 1985, seeing as how the remake just happened. You've also not done a vampire film yet, and this one has lots of great creature FX from Richard Edlund.

OH! How about Michael Dougherty's horror anthology epic, Trick r' Treat?!

EDITED TO ADD: The Monster Squad, Scream, The Evil Dead, Cloverfield, Deep Rising and The Fog (it's weird that you guys haven't done more Carpenter films than just The Thing). smile

EDITED TO ADD: Splinter, Gore Verbinski's The Ring, Pet Semetary 1 & 2 (isn't it about time for Trey's stories to be in their proper context?), Slither (Fillion!), Identity and Clive Barker's Hellraiser.

I guess we can at least agree he USED TO have something, but then lost it, apparently.

410

(83 replies, posted in Off Topic)

Actually, I think Shyamalan is a solid director. It's the WRITING I wish he would leave in more capable hands.

In regards to Tarantino as an actor, he's just one of those personalities who is going to come out in a role no matter what, so it's better to just let him play to that. I thought he was delightfully creepy in From Dusk Till Dawn. Also, though he is playing a slight variation of himself, I think he's really good as Chester in Four Rooms: The Man From Hollywood. His monologue at the bar, when he's laying out the money is quite captivating and charismatic, in my opinion.

My submission for this thread (not sure if it's been said already) is Nathan Fillion as Captain Malcolm Reynolds. Some of the best work he's done, so far. smile

At 00:40:35, Chris says something like, "Oh come on! If you haven't watched Buffy by now, you're not going to!" He couldn't be more wrong: http://www.potentialcast.com.

These are called Introcasts. I recently started one with a group of friends for Arrested Development. We're watching for the first time and that show came and went how many years ago?

Back to Kill Bill: Volume 2. I don't know if this is true, but I read/heard somewhere that Pei Mei is voiced by Quentin. I don't think it sounds like him, but the audio could have been tweaked to hide it. Maybe those of you more familiar with Gordon Liu's voice than I can tell me for certain if that's the case or not.

I also remember something about Esteban being originally written for Harvey Keitel, but he was unable to play the part due to scheduling conflicts.

414

(25 replies, posted in Episodes)

Though the fight with Elle is fantastic and the scenes at the end with Bill contain some of Quentin's best writing, I think I prefer Volume One. It's much more focused and doesn't drag as I feel this one does. Mostly, I don't buy Budd as a member of DeVAS, pretty much at all. When we see him at his day job, he's a big wuss who lets his boss walk all over him. This is especially problematic since it's more or less his true introduction to the audience. I have trouble shaking that first impression, and his getting the drop on The Bride feels more like luck to me than strategy and cunning.

All that aside, I'm still looking forward to The Whole Bloody Affair. I bet these movies play much better in their initial form. Do we know if things will play out more chronologically, so we can go down the hit list properly? I'd like to see that.

I would also like to put in a vote for Cube. I find it very creative, refreshing and resourceful. Plus I just think it's a really good Horror film with some unsettling ideas and disturbing character developments.

I'm actually one of the few people who likes the sequels. I feel they have merits of their own. The second film (Hypercube) does some interesting things within that universe and has a lot of fun with time, spacial relations and quantum mechanics. The third film (Cube Zero, which is actually a prequel but should be viewed last to fully appreciate/understand it) is bizarre and occasionally silly, but it's meant to be. It has this great, off-kilter Terry Gilliam sensibility to it.

So yeah, that's my two cents on the matter. DiF should cover at least the first one, then decide if somewhere down the pipe whether or not to tackle the rest.

THIS. smile

It feels a bit too "busy". Oddly dark, too but perhaps that's more an issue on my end? I second the notion of having more than one sample video of collected clips (what's really creepy about this vid is the fact that I've been tinkering with the idea of making a sampler vid for Sofa Dogs to put up on YouTube for the past few weeks now!).

It also just occurred to me that some sort of warning about strong language and possibly offensive material might be a good idea, either on the main page or in the video itself, or both (like Zarban, starting off with the Columbine quote was kind of startling, even though I'd heard it before).

You know what else might help? Listing the movie title of the clip somewhere on the screen. Not only does it provide important context and info for those that might be unable to make out what they're seeing (either due to an unclear picture like me, or maybe it went by too fast), it also might get someone curious to check out a title they've not seen before (What the hell was that? Wait, they made a remake of The Blob?! Was that SHAWNEE SMITH?! Awesome!).

Okay, as for the layout and functionality of the new, overall look, I like it! I'm using Chrome, but it's late and my eyes are bloodshot, so I'll tinker with the buttons and features after much-needed nap time.

I feel like Brian is being especially finicky here...Finifter? Finicky?...Brian "Science!" Finicker! smile

To me, this isn't lazy. Cheap is subjective. A hook? Sure, but so what? A hook never hurt anyone (except maybe fish. HEY-O!). In any case, I feel this is just another way of telling your story. It's part of the language. Both Memento and Inception open at their climax/ending, essentially (as does The Prestige, now that I think about it. Heh, how amusing). There are a number of television shows that use this device as well. In fact, there are specific programs (sadly, no titles come to mind to help illustrate my point, but it's late and I'm tired) that format their entire run this way (start late in the story, then backtrack and build up to it).

EDITED TO ADD: Grounded For Life was one of the examples I was trying to think of.

This! This is what the Zombieland commentary should have been; An intelligent, objective examination of a movie I enjoy. Even though I think the movie works, I can greatly appreciate this commentary because the criticisms are constructive and valid. Great work, guys!

I could be mistaken, but a few times, you guys seem to imply that Short Round first met Indy at the top of the movie. Based on the way they talk to each other (He knows to call Indy "Dr. Jones", for example), I was always under the impression they were already established friends before this movie begins. Am I missing some important exchange in the picture (that's right, I said picture) that disproves this?
