I don't think there's much I can say about this episode, apart from it being good and interesting. There is an inherent limitation to the podcast when talking about editing, as there's no way to show examples. Even if we watch the documentary in question, we won't get to see, for example, different ways a scene could have been put together which would change viewer reaction. Hearing her talk about how she edited, though, was great.

As for future episodes, maybe a look at bad ones? A dissection at what didn't work? Or maybe compare two documentaries which tackled the same subject from different directions. Say, a Frontline documentary compared to a polemic. Actually, at look at the Frontline series might be fun, as PBS is what most people think of when they hear the word "documentary".

I think it's hard for me to upgrade my opinion of a bad movie simply because I'm not likely to give it a second viewing. More likely is a movie becoming less in my eye as I become more familiar with it.

She's referring to the main character and intended audience. Nobody thinks young people, let alone straight ones, actually write movies.

As Dorkman mentioned in the grab bag episode, this has happened in Anime. in a long running series, they simply put in filler episodes for a season or two until there's enough new comic book pages to fill a season of animation. For shorter series, they plan on just diverging from the original at some point and doing their own ending. Full Metal Alchemist did this. Then, once the manga ended, they went back and did another series which skipped much of the first half and adapted the new ending.

One reason for the quote from Terrance Dicks smile You have the Doctor mention some law of the universe which prevents paradoxes, then move on giving it no more thought!

A Feminist plea to NOT have women in the new Star Wars films.

"The prequels also had one major female character. I think. I can’t be sure, because I fell asleep in the middle of every one. They were some of the worst movies that have ever been made. Ever. Dull, boring, insulting, grating — I wish there had been no women in those movies. When future generations look back at this ridiculous time when Hollywood insisted on churning out film after film told from the perspective of straight young white men, I want them to look at Attack of the Clones and say “Women had nothing to do with that.”"

Any chance we see Luke and Stacy's kid in the new movie?

You reminded me of something. The two second floor bedrooms were on either end of the house. We each had a closet on the same side of the house as the stairway. Dad linked the two closets with a hidden storage area, running along the front of the house behind the stairwell.

Maybe you can link two bedrooms. Even if it's just you in the house now, think of the stories the next owners will come up with. Particularly if you don't tell them about it when you sell smile

One thing any original movie has going for it is the freedom to tell whatever story it wants.  Which doesn't guarantee a great result (see thread topic as an example), but I believe it improves the odds.

Oh, agreed. Mind you, it was different back in the day when studios felt free to change everything about the story they were adapting, including the title smile

My dad did something similar when he did the upstairs (they bought the house with the second floor just an open attic: I remember walking to the new bathroom having to avoid the holes in the floor because he didn't have all the plywood down). My room had two "cubby holes" in the wall on either side of my bed, which could fit either two or three small kids or all our toys and games. My sister's room had one cubby hole, and a built in bookcase. The fun part of the cubby holes was, Dad being Dad, he didn't do more work than was really needed. On either side of the entrance, not only could you see the exposed wall studs but the hole where he ran the wiring up to the light switch was open, so small toys could be lost down into the first floor walls. Exciting!

See, my problem with this idea is that it often seems to be applied both proactively and comprehensively when a creative team simply want to have free reign, and that has nothing to do with the quality of the story that's ultimately produced. Throwing out some small aspect of the continuity is acceptable as the last resort in an effort to make a good story workable. Ignoring it in its entirety is unacceptable as the first gambit of a new author with no ideas for working in an established universe. If you can't make any of your ideas work without first wiping the slate clean and starting from scratch, then you probably shouldn't be working with an existing property.

Although Doctor Who is a case where there had never been any continuity, or attempt to keep it, until the 80's when the fanboys took over the show. Unless you were the one who wrote the old episode, and you had your script, it was up to your faulty memory to try and bring up a past event. Every new production team DID wipe the slate clean, doing things their own way. That's why the show lasted so long (and is why the new show is already getting creaky from all the new baggage).

I'm reminded of when the same thing happened with Doctor Who. After the show was canceled, a bunch of Who writers hooked up with Virgin Books and started the New Adventures series. These were intended to be a direct continuation of the show, in continuity. It got off to a rocky start, showing that some of the things that had been in the works for season 28 would have pissed me off, but overall we got some great stories (one of which was adapted into New Who). When the US TV movie came out, that was worked in and the books became about the 8th Doctor.

When the new show started, naturally, they felt no need to consider book continuity too much. Which is to be expected. As former Script Editor Terrance Dicks said in the introduction to the first New Adventures book, if continuity gets in the way of a good story, you throw out continuity smile

Can we remember that most HB cartoons were not that good, and in no way can sustain a half hour story let alone a full movie? Jonny Quest, sure, even the 90's version, but apart from that?

There are docs who are rated on their subject and not their quality, and this is probably one of them. I just want the information: if it's put together well, bonus!

All of which is fine, and if any particular thing turns people off the show, that's just the risk you run when you try to make anything edgier than Full House.  (Actually I'm sure somebody somewhere quit watching Full House because of some episode that went too far.)

You also have those turned off when things don't go far enough. All the calls for stories to be darker, more "edgy", the bitching at the current trend of PG-13 rated horror films. In 20 years when the final book in the series is released, I hope it's all happy and hopeful, just to annoy those who like the current rape and bloodshed smile

Well, the awards for the best erotic stories, the Clitorides, were announced today, and my three nominated stories lost sad 'Flip of Faith' came in second for best Humor story, though, so that's something.

Through whatever magic, this one just showed up on my iPad, with the correct date and everything. Also, the full movie seems to be on Youtube, but it wouldn't let me watch it on my iPad. Probably because the app I was using wouldn't let me see the ads.

I was able to get it by going to the iTunes store and manually download it, but it had a date of 2001 so showed up at the bottom of the list. I tried to download it to my iPad at work today to listen to it again, and there seemed to be a problem. So, something is/was up.

Interesting episode smile I do like how nobody remembered why Alicia Silverstone became a thing. She was in three Aerosmith videos when they had their comeback, including one with Liv Tyler. So, she was the next upcoming star for a bit, until she wasn't.

Turning existing works into musicals is a time honored tradition. Who can forget how the cynical play Pygmalion became My Fair Lady, over the creator's dead body (Shaw refused to sell the rights, so they just waited until he died). Now you have Broadway musicals based on Ghost, 9 to 5, The Producers, etc. There's even a Last Starfighter musical. Results with these adaptations, naturally, vary smile

Too bad the rest of the world didn't feel that way. I gave up on the show after watching The Train Job when it aired. Mind you, while I liked Buffy I didn't watch Angel, and had heard bad things about this show from the local paper's TV reviewer (he had seen a cut of an episode without effects at the network "up fronts" where ad rates are set), so the show had to prove itself. It didn't. Maybe if I watched it again, with the full knowledge that the show is good, I'd like it, but when I go back to Firefly I skip that one.

There's two ways to adapt War of the Worlds: you can adapt the plot, or the idea. The plot is about aliens invading England around 1890. The IDEA is aliens invading "now". After all, Wells wasn't writing a period piece, he was commenting on British colonialism, and what if someone tried to do it to them. Neither movie has much to do with the plot or characters of the book. If you want to see the plot adapted well, you want the rock opera.
