I just rewatched Time After Time (mentioned in the episode). The premise is great, but it was filmed like a cheap TV movie. You can definitely see its influence on the Star Trek IV script (co-written by Nick Meyer).

Five years later some lousy hack ripped off the "murderer from another time" premise and we got The Terminator wink Harlan Ellison sued him and got some cash, maybe Nick Meyer should've tried that too.

(BTW, The Terminator was initially called Electronic Murderer in Poland).

Last Action Hero. I actually really, really like that Title.

Polish translators decided that it means "The Hero Of The Last Action". But what can you expect from people who turned Dirty Dancing into Swirling Sex?

This episode blew my mind... I've known this movie for almost 20 years, but somehow I never noticed it's Ian McKellen (Ugh... I mean SIR Ian McKellen).

Death Proof don't bother, no one really likes it that much, even defenders like me enjoy it for its commitment to what its doing

The movie is just a fan film, an homage to 70s exploitation flicks with a healthy dose of foot fetish (Quentin's trademark). It has almost no substance. I'm not sure if the DIF guys would have a lot to say about it.

Why would J.J. change a successful formula? Let's just have another vengeful villain wanting to destroy Earth and some bigsplosions

The above was meant to be sarcastic. I'm just as tired of this formulaic approach as you are smile

I don't hate The Motion Picture either... I appreciate what they were trying to do, even though they ripped off one of their old episodes. The result was an imperfect, but relatively pleasant hybrid of ST-TOS and 2001 (and I'll defend 2001 till my dying day). And the ST-TMP Director's Cut actually improves the movie (unlike some other sci-fi Special Editions that we all know  wink  ).

Would it kill them to make a movie called Star "TREK" be about actual exploration?!

Yes  big_smile Hollywood prefers to play it safe and rehash the same formula (and the same franchises) all over again. It's easy money.

Exploration? Ridley Scott tried that with Prometheus... sort of. He just didn't know what he actually wanted to explore.

If you ask me, Trek will probably feel Star Wars-y until they get rid of J.J. (maybe they will... he wanted to do Star Wars all along and now he finally has a chance with Episode VII).

I'm hearing disturbing rumours of this movie being Prometheus-level stupid.

So was the previous one... and it made a pretty large profit. Why would J.J. change a successful formula? Let's just have another vengeful villain wanting to destroy Earth and some bigsplosions big_smile

Although, to be fair, the talky TV Star Trek that we've come to know and love wouldn't work on the big screen anyway... They tried that with The Motion Picture (and, to some extent, Insurrection).

Focus Features is supposed to be the "artsy" division of Universal, so the budget can't be nearly as huge as John Carter's.

Anyway, the plot summary on IMDb sounds a lot like Apollo 18  yikes

Please don't end up being some stupid viral marketing campaign or something

It really does sound too good to be true... But making another movie about Mars (after the failures of Red Planet, Mission To Mars and John Carter) would require even more courage than actually going to Mars, so it's probably not a flick.

I just came up with "HollyWorld" and "The Filmtastic Four", but both seem to be already taken  sad

"Cool story, bro" may be available, but it's incredibly generic...

The world of The Hunger Games (only the movie - I haven't read any of those books) seems pretty interesting, but the plot doesn't have enough substance to it. It reminds me a little of The Chronicles Of Riddick. The action can be entertaining, but it's a one-time watch.

I really liked David Warner in the episode, it was great to see him again.

A small goof: the proper translation of "meters" into Russian is "метры", not "метерс" (the latter is just a transliteration into Cyrillic).

EDIT: Oh, it's a trope.

IMHO the high point of the movie is the "coming out" scene.

SPOILER Show
"Have you tried not being a mutant?"

The guy that Brian recognized (Stryker's soldier) was a Goa'uld spy on Stargate SG-1. I noticed a few other SG-1 people there (it seems like Vancouver has only five actors).
