I unashamedly love pokemon, although I've only played three of the games.

As much as I balk at the thoughts of an Episode VII, I can't help but wonder what the Pixar team might be able to come up with.

I enjoyed Looped a lot but never felt like it completely gelled as a story. The whole TK idea seemed like a second magic bean that could have been scrapped altogether. I suppose it was constructed to answer the question as to how The Rainmaker was able to begin taking over future cities single-handedly, but the whole thing seems irrelevant to me. Why couldn't he just be the next Hitler or something? A person Old Joe has good reason to want dead, but not someone who strains our suspension of disbelief so much.

I have to agree with bullet3. It seemed like two different stories that would have sufficient enough on their own, but may have tripped over each other when combined.

The other thing that bothered me a bit was some of the costuming (although Jeff Daniels' tie critique was amusing). I"m a little tired with the black trenchcoats and sunglasses look the goons were sporting.

All that being said Looper was fun and fairly original and had some memorable scenes (the one in which Paul Dano's future self begins falling apart was brilliant) .

The dialogue in this film actually let me down. I groaned audibly when Hathaway was forced to read the "Cat got your tongue?" Line (which I think must be mandatory for any movie involving a character inspired by something feline).

Also there was a glaringly unapologetic As You Know conversation between her and Batman about the Clean Slate software that had me facepalming.

The second act was too long in my opinion and I remember feeling anxious that Nolan was really close to dropping the ball altogether at some parts. By the climax and end of the third act I was completely drawn back in though. There is Fridge Logic galore but I was able to suspend disbelief and remained engaged.

I liked your Star Wars Trilogy analogy, I think it fits this one fairly well.

Oh and I loved The Avengers, but like some other people already mentioned the first 15 - 20 minutes were the weakest in my opinion.

Banner/Hulk went from being one of my least favorite character is the Marvel U to my favorite in the film. Joss really fucking nailed his character.

In the Civil War arc, the government cracks down on masked superheroes after a battle results in the incineration of a small town, killing thousands.  The government passes a bill requiring all SUper powered folk to register and be employed by the government.  The Avengers split down the middle in their support of it; Iron Man adamantly supports the bill, Captain America does not.  Those who do remain Avengers while Cap leads a dissident underground group of Avengers to battle not just Iron Man's faction, but the nefarious forces behind the new law.  Consequences were never the same.

I loved the Civil War and it would be great to see a version of it on the big screen (as opposed to another aliens from outer space antagonist). Unfortunately I don't think it will be possible any time soon. Too many other studios still own the film rights to Marvel characters (Sony - Spider-Man, Fox - X-Men and Fantastic Four). So it would pretty much come down to a Nick Fury and Cap vs Iron Man and Thor movie.

Yeah, DIF got me through some lonely times when I was living in the mountains of Sichuan with no TV or DVD player.
What part of China are you in? I lived over there for about a year and a half (mostly in Hunan and Sichuan).

Hunger Games left me completely underwhelmed. I read the books last year and enjoyed them (didn't love them, but they're a super-quick and fun read).

The movie had been getting very positive reviews so I was excited, and maybe I let my expectations get too high.
Here are a few problems I had:

I normally don't mind the shaky handheld camera gimmick or quick cuts, but the amount and severity of them in the first act distracted the hell out of me.

I think the movie failed to illustrate just how big the social and economic gap was between District 12 and the capitol. Obviously there was a difference in luxury, fashion and technology, but nobody in District 12 seemed to be starving or as destitute as portrayed in the books.

Katniss never seemed to fulfill her role as a figurehead of a rebellion (which I'm sure will happen in the sequels, but the groundwork wasn't properly laid).

Crazy Jim.

I thought some of you might be interested in this site that Jamie and Adam are going to start becoming involved with.
Apparently the site has been around for years, but I guess this is something of a revamp.
Should be interesting.

I just came to post this article as well.
I love the idea, if only someone less famous did it, they wouldn't have any qualms of making it available for the internet to see.

X-Men was the hero team I always came back to. I never followed the Avengers until the launch of the Ultimates by Mark Millar, that was great.

Actually, this is the thing that I'm most curious about.  Does the Avengers have some kind of affirmative action quota?

It's more a result of Marvel trying to pile a lot of popular characters together in one book to boost readership, while keeping the roster varied enough to try and attract as many demographics as possible (the again almost every character in the Marvel Universe has been a member of the Avengers at one time or another).

It does remind me of the Patton Oswalt bit though:

“Try the Avengers, they’ll take anyone. Hey, they have a guy with a bow and arrow? I’m not kiddding. What, are they recruiting at sporting goods stores?
‘Hey, you jump rope really fast, how would you like to be an Avenger?’
‘I like the way you tether ball, sir. How would you like to take on ULTRON?’”

I'm incredibly hard to win over with a trailer.
Like, really incredible. Even trailers I watch and go "some editor fucking rules," still don't win me over.

Dear Teague, Trey, whomever else this applies to,

I think it might have come up on the Source Code episode as well, that you don't really get excited about upcoming movies and that you don't feel any kind of impetuous to see them upon their release.

I was wondering if you've always been this way, or if this is a result of living in LA and working in the industry. I'm a smart enough guy to know that trailers are just advertising tools and exploit whatever they think will get people in the seats, but I still get excited when I hear/read/see more about a movie I think has potential to be fun or great. Is it just the marketing/politics behind the industry that turn you off, or are you all just mature (jaded) bastards that refuse to buy into the zeitgeist (or am I misinterpreting what I thought you said)?

We all have our own preferences, but knowing how much you guys love film it seems hard to believe you don't get the same twinges of anticipation that I do when you think about that new project that your favorite director/writer/actor/team is working on.

Knowing how much of a merch-whore George can be, I'm surprised we never saw some of these actually produced.

I've been pleased with everything I've seen so far, with the exception of the Halloween costume Chris Evans still insists on wearing.

It's going to be big, dumb expensive fun sprinkled with a few witticisms and 'Holy Shit!" moments, courtesy of Joss.

I can't wait.

Apropos to rumors that Michael Keaton was interested in a Beetlejuice sequel, I wanted to share this article from cracked.com.

http://www.cracked.com/article_19751_6- … es_p2.html

I'm not sure how apocryphal these are, but some of these are downright nuts.
Highlights include:

  • Ei8ht - A direct sequel to Se7en, only this time Somerset has psychic powers.

  • E.T. 2 - ET (Zrek) is hunted by racist conspecifics while Elliot is abducted and tortured in the process.

  • Gump and Co. - Forrest continues to stumble through several more historically important events including OJ Simpson's White Bronco police chase.

I don't know if it's more of an indictment to those who tried to pass this schlock off or if it actually goes to show that Hollywood isn't as insane/desperate as we all think for quashing these abortions before they were made.

Does anyone else know of any other poorly treated sequels that never came about?

It was a nice movie. Maybe a little too visually stylized for my taste, but it still looked beautiful. I'm not sure I'd nominate it for best picture (but then I didn't see too many movies this year that I would say are objectively better).
It's certainly a movie aimed at Hollywood nostalgia.

I think I agree with you, my favorite scenes were the flashbacks to Melies' film projects.

Just in case you're not all totally burned out on dissecting The Phantom Menace, this guy has some interesting ideas on what it could have been:

A lot of his ideas reminded me of the treatments Dorkman and the rest of DIF came up with, but it's worth a watch regardless.
