Looks like it still isn't on Blu-ray, but there's a pretty good HD transfer on iTunes for anyone interested.

Also, regarding the Box Office, what your thoughts are (if any) on the current slump, and the possible causes.

They're still making tons of money (ticket prices), it's just that fewer people are going to theatres. The audience they have been mining for the last two decades (teenage boys, who buy the most concessions and keep the exhibitors happy) have been split against additional ways to be entertained.

The short answer is that Levelator does a fancy analysis and automatic normalization, but the long answer, which I found a valuable read, is here:

There's a red light on a stick next to the podium that goes off when you hit your allocated time for giving your presentation and then again later for asking questions.

When the Titanic reel screened, the first thing Cameron did was unscrew the light bulb and said something to the effect of, "The one thing I learned these last couple years is that you can't rush these things."

If I remember correctly, it was cut really late in the production, so almost all of the work was done already. Cheapest way to differentiate a "Special Edition". When Disney Gets Lame.

Tangentially relevant, damn Berne Convention.

I tend to sacrifice clarity in favor of enthusiasm.

But hell yeah! A list I'm happy to be on.

Right after I briefly demanded your attention at Kate's like an hour ago, I immediately regretted not mentioning to you how awesome I think Ark is.

No! I'm all for it. As long as it's good. It's all an illusion anyway.

Also blinky text.

For contrast! I think this works really well.

DUDE how did I miss this thread? Until watching all of these, Reedy was just that guy that made The Fountain commentary one on my favorite episodes of the show.

Now there's all these delightful styleé videos kicking my face in.

DVD's on the way, gotta see the rest of those. And wear it as handsome bling.

Ya, cause there's been so many forces stopping him from making "personal" films these last 20 years. I mean it must be so hard doing intimate passion projects when you're a multi-billionaire with unlimited time and money on his hands. This whole article just pisses me off, with Lucas trying to play the "victim" card over all the backlash. Hey pal, maybe if you took your massive successes and kept trying new things and experimenting like Spielberg did, instead of literally sitting on your ass and doing nothing for 15 years and just milking Star Wars for all its merchandise money. Then re-releasing it every 5 years to rake in another couple hundred million every time. Then 20 years since his last directing gig thinking he still had it and was awesome enough to make the prequels himself. Then after fucking up Phantom Menace, not having the common sense and humility to say.....ok, maybe I'm not the director/writer I thought I was, lets hire someone who knows what they're doing. All the while retroactively trying to wipe out the memory of the original movies as they were out of existence, and poisoning Spielberg with your shitty ideas and talking him into fucking up ET (thank god Spielberg has come around on that this last year) , when a decade before you had been an activist for film preservation. Maybe if you didn't do all that you wouldn't be vilified and hated by damn near the entire film community. So ya, go ahead and retire, and don't let the door hit your ass on the way out.

I think that changed like five years ago. You can do all kinds of crazy shit in real time now, especially if you do your research first and get a machine with an appropriate graphics card. CS5 introduced this GPU processing thing that lets you do crazy stuff like playback a dozen HD clips with effects in real time.

I'd recommend learning Premiere, but set up with Avid-ish keyboard commands. It'll make you a little more software ambidextrous if/when you need to operate on that kind of box.

Spaaaaaace! This would be a fun thing to get into, never considered it before. Those shots are great. Would it be possible to set up a motion control rig, really low RPM motor or something for long exposure that counteracts the earth's rotation to get long exposure of the night sky without star trails?

PRE-EDIT: Just looked it up and it's called an equatorial tracking mount. And they're kind of expensive. Balls. Oh man, if you did a time lapse with one of those the horizon would spin around the frame.

Knew nothing of the series or movie. Had it playing on Netflix during the live show. And now I know what you get when you blend a great property with all kinds of neat stories and characters, an all-star creative team, and Shyamalan's unique brand of agressive incompetence.

Great, twisted little vignette. Nice shot selection and the camera work added a lot to the story. Liked the reveal of the body.

When using available light, knowing how and where to take light away becomes really valuable. For instance, on some of the white walls, if you flag off some light from the window, you can get a soft shaded gradient on that wall to make it a little more dynamic and help shape the space. Similarly, every wall in that room is bouncing light around and adding fill. You can further shape light then by hanging some thick black fabric or a curtain or something to cut down on bounce behind the camera. Then, if you want to add more, you can use a piece of poster board or something to bounce the light exactly where you want it. Really cheap way to get light under control and use it to your advantage.

Found this thread thanks to them neato new banners. Such a cool little video.

Did some research into Technicolor processes, and that one with really strong reds and cyans was the second two strip process, which was recorded in two strips, then dyed and glued together.

So bumming around in After Effects during today's epic commentary/Intermission recordings I followed the process as dictated in this 1923 Popular Science article:

http://books.google.com/books?id=XSoDAA … mp;f=false

and managed to come up with something that's more or less operationally identical to the optical film process from the 20s.

That's the problem. it doesn't matter what the intentions were! If its awesome and made you laugh, then it's effectively a good movie. I mean look at Miami Connection, totally fucking awesome despite being what you would call a "bad" movie:

Trivia! Sound guy on this was future VES chair Jeff Okun.

That aside though, realized the most uncomfortable, most terrible movie experience I've ever had was. Return to Sleepaway Camp. The first one is a classic, the second and third went off and did their own thing, and the director from the great original film made one of the shittiest movies I've ever seen, I felt sick and angry by the end of it.

Spoilers: "Every two hours are two hours you will never get back. You cannot hoard your two hourses."

The trailer was plenty Italian Spiderman for everyone.

The good news is that I've never heard of anyone getting in trouble for using identifiable UI in a project. Covering up actual trademarks and logos tends to be plenty. However, if you really want to mock something up, I would look up Dashcode, Stencilsapp, or iPlotz.
