Though I'm pretty confident that last one is a joke.

No, it's a real argument, one made due to the poor way evolution has been described by its opponents. If you say "man is descended from apes", there is the image of all the apes slowly turning into men. If this only happened to some, why? And why aren't the apes still here turning into men?

The answer, obviously, is that we're not descended from apes, but both humans and apes have a common ancestor, but that's not how it has been described to these people.

For a good, by which I mean bad, example of this, one need only look at the comic strip For Better or Worse. While never perfect, for awhile it was a very nice tale of a family aging in real time, the kids having crushes, relationships, going to college. Then, the creator realized that due to health reasons she'd probably have to retire, and decided to pick an end point and force all her characters to reach it. The result was... catastrophic smile She decided both of the original kids would end up married to their first boyfriend/girlfriend, and wrenched the story there. She truly did not understand what her characters were telling readers, as opposed to what she thought she was saying on her march to that final wedding.

Maybe someone had a plan to have a die-off on Earth to get the population down, and it's not working. "If we can get the population down to one billion, we can do something with the place. Deny them health care! Wait... you mean they're still reproducing, but now are just suffering a lot? Well, that's egg on our face!"

Pertwee was an action Doctor, always doing hand to hand combat with aliens. Could be fun to return to that smile

Continuity wasn't that huge a deal. Are the actors doing about the same thing and wearing the same clothes? OK, cut that shit together and move on. Wrong shirt in this next scene because we had to cut out that other scene? Well, fuck it. Let's hope no one notices that.

Original Trek was famous for that. They'd cut in reaction shots from other episodes if they needed one, the wrong colored shirt be damned. Often the people at the helm would change between wide shot and closeup, especially in season two when they used season one footage without Chekov.

Gosh, this would be a good excuse for you guys to watch Bruce Dern in The Cowboys and do a commentary for it!

Does she watch romantic comedies?

Not that I know of. She likes plot. If something is just characters, she gets bored. She told the story of watching Do The Right Thing in college with some of her roommates. A half hour in, they looked at each other and said, "has anything happened? No. Is anything going to happen? No." and turned it off. The fact it was building to something was lost on her. A similar thing happened when we saw the musical 'In The Heights'. It has no plot, just two days in the life of this small NYC neighborhood. She was bored smile

The difference might be that this was a first draft, the kind of thing you don't want out there. The other leaks might have been closer to the shooting script.

If 'HER' wins the oscar, by definition it isn't science fiction.

(old author's joke: What's the difference between science fiction and speculative fiction? If you're paid over a certain amount per word, it's no longer science fiction.)

I mentioned in another thread that my sister hated Gravity. As she put it, once there was only one character, you know nothing would happen to her until the end of the movie so there was no suspense. I asked if she'd ever read Robinson Caruso, and she said 'no' smile

The best short film about mermaids, naturally, is this music video by Sirenia smile

Nope smile I doubt I'll win anything, but I already have two nominations for best author smile

Check out the Clitorides Awards, for best erotic story!

Well, not necessarily. Just like with films, something can be great but just not what people want to watch at the moment. It's also much easier to not see any ads for a new show if it's not on a network you usually watch. I wish them well, but once Football season is over I won't be watching FOX until fall so doubt I'll catch any great shows they premier then smile

If you want WTF, you have to see how the original TV series ended. The network, upset at the amount of violence, made them throw out tons of finished animation late in the season, but gave them no extra money. The final two episodes are mostly just text and voiceover. Makes no bloody sense and insulted every viewer (although I liked it at the time). All these countless remakes are a reaction to that.

It's good, but not the best. It's also more about Gordon than Batman, telling how he came to Gotham and set himself apart from the corrupt cops there.

Legolas' bigger jerk of a daddy is quite forgettable, though. The whole elf part kinda destroys the idea that they're pure and perfect and gay. I mean, who have two passed out drunk in the cellar. Wasn't really expecting that either.

I was in 3rd Grade when the old animated version of The Hobbit came out, which got me to read the book. Thanks to that, I NEVER pictured the elves in The Hobbit to be the same as the ones in Lord of the Rings. The Mirkwood elves were always these semi-evil drunk ugly creatures to me.

The most interesting and important thing that ever happened to Batman is that he became Batman.

Or it should have been.  But I agree that - in a rare case - Batman Begins isn't very interesting.

See, that's the odd thing. That is NEVER the best Batman story smile

It is one of those phrases that sounds good, but there are enough exceptions it becomes somewhat meaningless. Some of my favorite characters did not start out with origin stories. The author instead dropped the reader into the most interesting part of that person's life, when they were who they were, and let us readers learn about them as they dealt with some problem. The Horatio Hornblower books, for example. There are prequels NOW, but if you read the publication dates you'll see we didn't get Midshipman Hornblower until the author realized he couldn't do much with the character as a 60 year old Admiral.

I... was talking about Sean Connery, and my ongoing mental self-argument about how to deal with the "art vs. artist" issue in general. Not trying to conflate Shia with Wagner.

For the record.

Although that'd be an interesting tack to avoid Godwin.

Oh, I agree, one reason I posted the comic. I see it as saying, "if you're going to draw this line for something relatively minor, a LOT is going to end up on the other side."

Disagree, sort of. It will not affect him so far as audiences go, as I seriously doubt they're paying attention and/or will remember it. Will he have trouble getting work now? That's what remains to be seen.
