For those of you interested, this is what we call an Enhanced Podcast, and they're easy enough to do if you're on a Mac and have Garageband (I think you need iLife '09, Garageband 5.1).

The idea is you can be listening in iTunes (or iPhone, or iPod Touch) and as topics come up, the link appears in the Art window.  You can click the link and read about the topic without having to search the forum for it.  You can even skip right to a particular topic by going up to the Chapter menu while the episode is playing.  In this episode I've even added the frame to look for for the pause point, as well as a chapter for the sync point if you'd like to jump right in.

Not all the chapters have artwork, so most of the time you'll see the weekly poster art.  Also not all of the art appears as a chapter, so keep your eye out for these Easter Eggs.  Heck, maybe if this takes off we can get some kind of contest going.

My intention is to do this instead of (or perhaps in combination with) the traditional show notes.  Since school and now work occupy much of my time now, and these both take less time, and are more interactive, I think this will work out nicely.

Sorry for making you download this episode twice, blame Teague, (I gave him the link days ago).

Hope you all enjoy, and please let us know what you think.

Thanks!

Just for you Brian:

http://www.recaro.com/uploads/pics/pole_position.jpg

And Army and Marine Corp bashing!?  Oh, sir!  I'm pretty sure the Army and Marines can hold their own against the Coast Guard, Navy and Air Force, so bash at your peril.

That reminds me.

Eddie: Bash Brian for me next time you see him.

Then, throw his limp bleeding form into your trunk and drop him off at Camp Pendleton.  We'll see how much bashing he does after some wall to wall counseling at the hands of a platoon of Devil Dogs.

I know I'm asking a lot, but if it helps, just pretend you're Boba Fett delivering Han Solo to Jabba the Hutt.

Just avoid any potholes on the way home.

And the caissons go rolling along...

I can say categorically you are not alone; myself and at least one other regular forum member can tell a similar story.  Like Brian said, we really like to hear that something we have a great deal of fun making is so appreciated by those we make it for, and it's that kind of support that will ensure that Down in Front is around for a long time to come.

I'm getting a very Firefly-esque vibe from this, is that intentional?

I was thinking the same thing.  The only quibble I have is that a vehicle re-entering atmosphere would fire it's engines before it makes contact, certainly not during re-entry.  'Course if you have a Serenity type engine layout you can get away with that kind of thing, just 'cause it looks cool.

So will this be an all CG thing or a combination?

I'm thinking something along the lines of the Ranger handbook, or the SAS survival manual.  I'm a pragmatist.

Dorkman: that's exactly the problem I had trying to read Dune, but to be fair that was a long time ago and my attention span was even shorter than it is now.

Ah, another of my favorites.  And another of my pillars of hopeless romanticism.  Not much to say other than that.  As for the Inception comparisons, having finally seen it, I have to say I prefer Eternal Sunshine.

Hey, look who's back!  First off, sorry for my absence, and the absence of show notes; I promise they'll be returning.

I wish I'd been there for this one, because I too love this movie.  I watched it endlessly back in high school, and now it falls into that weird category of films I love, but don't watch much anymore.  I dug up a copy to watch with the commentary, and that was the first time I had watched it in years.

I've always thought of this film as romantic, and looking back I think this film is one of the reasons I'm the hopeless romantic that I am.  The idea of vengeance from the grave, that "I love you so much I'm going to come back to life and kill the fuck out of those bastards" thing.

The soundtrack was also a big influence on me.  It was the beginning of my love for Nine Inch Nails, and the start of my appreciation of music I had previously written off as just loud and obnoxious.

So yeah, good flick, good commentary.

Been feeling nostalgic myself lately; re-watching SG-1 and TNG.  Loving Universe; can't wait to see what they can do with it.  Also enjoyed Atlantis, but I'm not sure what it's status is.  The end of the last season doesn't suggest an end to the series, but I haven't seen anything to suggest a next season.

*This started as a response to redxavier's comment about how I posted the wrong map in the Master and Commander show notes.  It occurred to me that since we have listeners in other parts of the world, and I for one have a great deal of interest in learning about other cultures, that we should have a thread for cultural awareness.  What follows is my response from the  Master and Commander thread.*

redxavier wrote:

Just a head's up, that map shows Briton (i.e., Celtic) territories in the 6th century, not Anglo- Saxon.

Thanks for the clarification, and the history lesson.  (The map came from the same Wiki article about Anglo-Saxon England.)

Even as someone who has studied the Arthurian Legend and has a keen interest in the UK and its people and culture, it's easy to get confused by these things.  I certainly meant no disrespect.

Perhaps you could also help us understand the use of the term "British." I hear British and I think English, as in being from England, but aren't the Welsh and Scots also British?  As in The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland?  Or in that context does British refer to being a Briton (further confusion)?  Where does "Brit" fit in, and is that considered a pejorative?

I genuinely am interested in clearing this up.  I think us Yanks tend to get a bad rap when it comes to understanding other cultures, and it's not exactly undeserved.  For far too many of us anyone from the UK is English.  They've probably never even heard of Wales, and Ireland might as well be on the same island.

Personally, that infuriates me.

Another example:  my last girlfriend was from Belarus, but unless you have a keen interest in eastern European geography, it's not the kind of country everyone is familiar with.  After too many conversations that went like this:

"Nice accent, where are you from?"
"Belarus."
"Oh, ok…" blank stare
Long explanation about former Soviet Republics.

In casual conversation we just started answering Russia.

She didn't seem to mind, but I imagine someone from Ukraine or Bulgaria would feel differently.

Am I right in thinking that the same would go for a Scotsman, Welshman or Irishman with regards to being referred to as English?

Not to get too heavy handed here, but I believe that it is precisely this type of ignorance that is holding us back as a race, and as much as I love my country, we are probably the worst offenders.

On that note, I would like to start by apologizing on behalf of all Americans.  It is unfortunate that so many of us just don't give a shit, but please know that there are plenty of us that do, and I am one of them.

Anyway, let the DIF cultural summit commence.
