It's hard to gauge how popular 3d really is because cinemas tend to schedule more 3d screenings especially earlier in a films run and those 2d showing tend to be earlier in the day.

II also watched the first episode of Farscape this week and found it to be interesting (I had zero knowledge of it previously) but probably not enough to hook me.

Seriously stick with it.

I really wanted to like John Dies At The End but it just feels like things you've seen in other films before

This talks about how they wanted to end it on a cliff hanger to set up a franchise but decided it might leave viewers feeling ripped off and do more harm than good.

which is quite refreshing after every movie these days seems to need sequel bate.

SPOILER Show

Unless, of course, they decide that the next movie should be a remake of [spoiler]Turnabout Intruder, with Khan and Kirk swapping katras via Bones's accidental blood magic
. I can almost hear the overacting from here.

If that were the case

SPOILER Show
wouldn't Kahn get put in the tribble...?

But, regardless, I will probably still think Trek 09 was better fair than this.

I loved the shit out of JJ's first Trek

my main problem with the film is the depiction of...

SPOILER Show
Kahn. What made him memorable in the second movie was his personal history with Kirk and that doesn't exist here. In Space Seed he was just another villain of the week but Kirk having stranded him on a planet that became inhospitable leading to the death of his wife and followers gives him a reason to want revenge.

Here we're presented with a character who, off screen was defrosted from suspended animation after 300 years and used by Admiral Marcus whilst his people are held hostage in stasis tubes. No reference is given to the eugenics wars and very little is said about his background other than that he is a genetic superman.
He shares very little with Ricardo Montalban character which begs the question why bother using him at all.  You can't just put a character like Kahn in a new story without loosing who he was. If your familiar with the original films the character doesn't make sense and if your a new comer it's just a random character we are told is the worst enemy the Enterprise will ever face.

There were a series of comics where old episodes were retold with the new Enterprise which was fun for a few issues but soon lost its novelty and I certainly don't enjoy the films doing it with scenes from other movies, line for line with characters swapped around and whilst some may argue that Wrath of Kahn is cheapened by The Search For Spock it's nothing compared to solving everything in the last 10 minutes with a magic tribble.

The film has some issues in the second hour that go beyond this but for me the film would be significantly improved if instead of Kahn Cumberbatch's character was called oh I don't know... Steve.

$49.99 per month in the US which works out about £30 but no, they want £46.88 or $72 US

still could be worse. It's even more if your in a country that uses Euros!

That's a fair point.

The subscription model does make it affordable to someone who could never afford to pay for it in one go but if you can or have your paying much much more.

The thing I take exception to is last time I checked it costs a third more to download to this side of the Atlantic than in the states.

There are certainly worse projects on kickstarter then a series by professional writer with directing experience (He did one of those New Voyages you mentioned) but they seem to be going against all popular crowdfunding advice.

conventional wisdom would suggest doing a campaign for either preproduction or the pilot first as they would have a much easier time raising the total amount with something like a trailer to show how the piece will look.

I don't really think it's fair to compare the guy who wrote that tribble episode with Zach Braff for jumping on the kick starter bandwagon. I'm not sure how much profit this is really likely to make

I'd love to see a new space opera series since theres nothing on TV and a lot of the other projects that have popped up seem to be retro like the Space Command project that raised over $200,000 last year.

Back in the day, JMS said an episode of Babylon 5 cost only $850,000 at a time when the newest Trek episode cost $1.6 million. Compared to the Babylon 5 number, this show doesn't sound all that cheap, given the advances in tech.

To be fair adjusting for inflation $850,000 in 1993 would come to over a 1 million today which is about the average Doctor Who episode budget.

What they don't mention (and fair enough) is whether or not they are hiring pro crew or using the New Voyages method of going with volunteers.
