The suspense is killing me. O.o
Hey, that's true! "Magic Bean Talks" is WAY more available. Also, the shortened "Bean Talks" seems very unused and I find it easier to say ... though less magical.
Oh, sorry. I posted it on the front page, easy to miss with the huge influx of suggestions in the first few hours of this thread being posted.
Oh! Well in that case, I defer all glory the proposed name "Magic Beans Talk" may receive to the honorable WithKittens.

Oohhh. Can you be more specific?
But why are most of the member-based names using only Teague or Trey. There's a couple with Mike, but nobody has suggested putting Brian in the name. :,(.
Someone back when suggested "Brian and the Magic Beanstalk" which really made me giggle.
And because it's too obvious to not suggest: Nuke the Fridge Logic
And before I forget: Magic Beans Talk (get it beanstalk ... beans talk)
As you can see, I'm Michael. I'm a Computer Science student at the University of Colorado Boulder--.
We're neighbors! And congrats on the masters! If you go to Boulder Startup Week mayhaps I'll see you in person.
And welcome to the forum!
Maybe not this podcast, but Shark Brain and Fridge Logic needs to be the title of something.
I think it has potential for the podcast name. If you switch it to Fridge Logic and Shark Brain you could shorten it to Flasb. And Flasb is kinda of fun to say. : P
Geekza Returns
Geekza Strikes Back
Return of the Geekza
-Cut Act One
I like this one.
I like the space scoundrels poster, too.
If you go with The Intermission please-oh-please make the address intermission.pro, haha.
Edit: Also, since Hold Your Applause was DQ'ed sort of on a technicality, I'd like to resubmit it as Hold the Applause.
As far as I can tell, it's not trademarked. The .com is taken by the aforementioned podcast (who hasn't released an episode since Dec 2011). All the other domains appear to be available, though.
I would like for us all to just pause for a moment and marvel at how once again the (artist formally known as dif) Community has once again manged to prove that on a moment's notice it can turn into one of the most creative, effective think tanks the world over (literally).
Hold your applause, please.
Also,
Hold Your Applause

But, you know, some variation of "Fix it in Post" is growing on me.

Whoah, k, hold up. Let me make it perfectly clear that was a joke.
I will not have DiF be renamed to a pale attempt at a jab at George Lucas. Alright?
Just not gonna let that one happen.
I understand. Mostly I was just shocked no one had bought it yet.
P.S. sharkbrain.com is not available. Sorry, Trey.
P.P.S. screwthesoundtrack.com is available. And is there a reason to not use Geekza? Seems like a fine name.
Just by the by,
backseatdirectors.com
movierepairmen.com
fasterandmoreintense.com
are all available. And awesome.
And I also like having The Intermission episodes be different from the regular Dif episodes. Some of my podcasting apps actually sort the episodes based on weather or not it's a regular or Intermission episode and I kinda like that.
Until a suitable replacement is decided upon, I shall think of you as "The artists formerly known as DiF". ...Shame that name doesn't qualify.
Hurray for a hypothetical October Sky commentary! I caught it on tv the other week and had forgotten how enjoyable it is.
I would also nominate The Right Stuff and Metropolis.
I also wouldn't mind a series of episodes or maybe a intermission, where everyone that has been on DIF picks their absolute favorite movie and it is reviewed or there is a Q&A as to why.
I also would like this.
Not sure if ya'll have seen this, but it's currently making the rounds on pinterest.
I got tired of the setup/payoff thing, so I decided to explore the chain reaction model of storytelling, instead. It was kinda fun! Sorry for the crudity of this model. I didn't have the film to work from, so no time stamps. Though, I may go back someday and add them. Let me know if I missed anything.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is a well crafted story. It also serves as a good reminder to not oppress your women with cruel underwear.
According to Bob Gale on his commentary, they couldn't get the entire band to agree to be featured in the movie, but Eddie Van Halen was fine with it, so they just labeled the tape Edward (small letters) VAN HALEN and, I guess, hoped we wouldn't notice. ... All of this begs the question, WHY IN THE WORLD would you not want to be in Back to the Future!?
Teague: I most definitely will! I was hoping someone would offer!! Powerpoint has proved insufficient for this task and I gladly hand it off to you. But you're going to have to wait a day, because I'm going to send some other info thingies along with it that I learned while doing this, as well. : )
Trey: I think it SHOULD have been Marty's band's tape. They even establish his band's name, so all they would have had to do was change the label on the tape. *sigh* I guess they went for the funny pop culture gag instead. 10 points to you if you know the name of Marty's band without checking.
I didn't include the "put your mind to it" thing in because it happens three times at the beginning, middle and end and therefore seemed like more of the theme of the movie than anything else. (And I couldn't decide how I would fit all of that one on the page in any sort of organized manner. But I'll put it on the list so Teague can put it in his infographic if he wants to.) -- Edit: D'oh! The sister popularity one is good, too! Will add.
And my "cool story bro" tale for the movie is this: Going to see Back to the Future was my parents' first date. So for me this movie has almost always had this extra layer of, "What if I have to go back in time, to make my parents go on their first date to see a movie about a kid who has to go back in time to make sure his parents go on their first date." The idea blew my mind as a youth and has remained much more of a threat in my head than it really should.
Have you done any other movies? It would be great to compare BTTF to weaker films to see the difference.
Hey, thanks! This is the first one I've done. My plan before I started was to do this with Bttf, Titanic, Holes and then progress to less obvious/weaker ones to compare them. I may still do this, but making that dang chart was way more mentally and emotionally exhausting than I had guessed possible, so I think I'm going to take some time off and let my brain re-solidify. ...But yeah, I'd imagine I'll do more in the future. You have any good candidates?
Also, where would you all peg the act 2/3 break in BttF? I think I put it as the kids coming back to "life" in the picture at the dance, but I'm not sure if that's correct. What do you all think?
I watched Back to the Future today and made a chart of the setups and payoffs in the movie. If you can think of one I missed, please do let me know.
It goes:
00:00 Setup -------- Payoff (time of payoff moment) [time elapsed since setup moment]
Also: Act # break (time of act break) [length of act]
It's also possible that some of the math is wrong, 'cause after staring at this screen all day, I. am. tired. But the time stamps of the moments should all be correct.
I imagine many of these have been suggested before, but just to throw them out there:
The Land Before Time
Minority Report
Groundhog Day
Toy Story 3
Labyrinth
Big
A Knight's Tale
Joe Verses the Volcano
A League of Their Own
Willow
Honey, I Shrunk the Kids
Shrek
And some John Hughes maybe?
Ferris Beuller
The Breakfast Club
Home Alone
You guys like Miyazaki?
Spirited Away
Princess Mononoke
Howl's Moving Castle
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Ender's Game. (Release date: Nov. 1st, supposedly) It has Harrison Ford, Hailee Steinfeld, Ben Kingsley, aliens, war games in zero-G and the book was excellent! Definitely my number 1 anticipated movie of the year.
That, The Great Gatsby, Hunger Games 2, jOBS and Lone Ranger round out my top five.
Good point, Invid. That and Dorkman's letter to the director of Star Wars got me thinking. I doubt I'd be complaining about any of this if I actually liked the character of Black Widow. After the movie was over I didn't feel like I was friends with her. There are a lot of main characters in that movie and I had already had 2+ hours to get to know most of the other ones individually so that may have emphasized how distant she felt.
Maybe the problem for me being able to enjoy her/this movie is less about gender politics and more about basic ol' storycrafting.
I keep thinking that Padme shouldn't really work for me in Attack of the Clones. As a character she does a lot of what I've been complaining about, but in her case it doesn't really bother me. It's fun to watch her fall in love with that idiot even though we know (and maybe even she knows) it won't end well. Hmm.
