If he came out of early retirement for this, I've lost all faith in humanity.
I don't think he'd retired yet when they were shooting this. Hopefully he'll end his career on a more dignified note.
1. HEAT (1995)
2. APOCALYPSE NOW (1979)
3. BIRDY (1984)
Funnily enough, Birdy also defined a small part of my childhood. Seeing Ghostbusters for the first time, watching this exact VHS trailer reel, I'll never forget how much of an impact the imagery and music had on me.
1. BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA (1986)
2. FLETCH (1985)
3. TRADING PLACES (1983)
I've always liked Affleck, even when it was popular to trash the guy. But yeah...
I'm just baffled why he would want to do it. He's an A-list director coming off a best picture win, and these are exactly the kinds of roles that led his career into a nose-dive 10 years ago. Why would he waste his time as an actor in a comic-book movie like this one, instead of focusing his efforts on getting another quality film made? [deleted for later use] Unless this is a case where Warner Brothers said "we won't finance your next movie unless you do us this favor" I have literally no idea why he agreed to do this. Maybe if he was directing it also, I could see it as him wanting to try playing around with that kind of budget, but doing it just as an actor? It's crazy...
Not that any of this matters anyway. It's a stupid movie. Just... what a weird choice.
I reckoned WB and Snyder would go with an unknown, like Cavill. Certainly someone with less baggage.
He doesn't strike me as a guy who would do a role like this just for a paycheck
Ooo. How was Mysterious Skin? I've been wanting to see that.
It was alright. Gregg Araki's direction is typically ham-handed at times, especially during the scenes of sexual molestation and violence, but the acting by JGL, Michelle Trachtenberg, et al. rise above the director's worst tendencies. At its best, though, the film exhibits moments of real sensitivity, which is enhanced by the ambient/dream pop score by Harold Budd and Robin Guthrie and songs by Slowdive, Cocteau Twins and Ride.
The soundtrack and the performances are honestly the best things about Mysterious Skin.
SPOILERS (unless you've watched seasons 1-4):

A BBC reporter lets the truth slip out regarding the round-the-clock royal baby coverage:
A baby that isn't likely to ascend to the throne for another 50 to 70 years.
I'm hoping they name the kid Joffrey.
