I never managed to solve a rubik's cube back when they came out, although I could solve two sides. I think I COULD solve the pyramid puzzle, which just had four sides. That one was also easier to take apart and put together, iirc smile

Almost all my readers content themselves with the free versions at my story page, but I have some new book versions available in my store, both ebooks and softcovers. I've made three sales of the ebook package, meaning I'm now a professional! Most books have some erotic content.

This was very interesting, and I'm excited to hear more. Curious to hear what the panel thought of Searching for Sugar Man. I found it pretty underwhelming. The story was kind of interesting, but the movie itself really didn't have a point. At the end I was wondering why they had bothered to make the movie in the first place, and what everyone else seemed to see in it. There was too much focus on Rodriguez himself and not enough on the impact his music had on South Africans, which to me was the really interesting part of the story.

You always have to keep in mind who the documentary is made for. If Searching for Sugar Man was made for South Africans, then, well, they already know all about the influence he had. It's the actual person that would be interesting.

10. Khan from Wrath of Khan was far nastier. PG-13 tends to water-down the drama.

So, 1980's PG is nastier than 2013 PG 13...

Also, for a character named Kahn-something-Singh or whatever... Why can't they seem to find an Indian actor to play him?  Are there just no Indian actors with SAG cards?  Maybe they could have found a Pakistani dude?  I dunno.  Maybe Indian folks just don't have enough experience making movies...

SPOILER Show
Maybe Aasif Mandvi was busy...

I think the real lesson they should be taking from this is that a giant expensive explodey blockbuster is not the right approach, make it about the story, and scale back the budget.

They need to remember that what saved Star Trek was slashing the budget and doing a small story with The Wrath of Kahn.

I am way behind. I have yet to see any of the last year's worth of Doctor Who. I did, however, finally get around to watching The Hobbit, and was happily surprised to see the last REAL Doctor has a role in it. No Ace, though.

We've gone through this before. Mulan is the other warrior princess, but you won't see her with weapons wandering the parks.

What other movie has the joke, "Do you want me to rape him?" And has that line as a complete non sequitur? smile

I know. In all the movies I've seen, the line is definitely a sequitur.

What's going to be missing is the age jump. In the trailer, we see a teen Ender. Ender at 6, at 10, undergoing all this is where the movie will probably deviate the most. Seeing a 6 year old kill a classmate, kicking him over and over when he's down...

As for Val, I suspect we'll see her part and Petra's be rather large, to make up for the all male cast.

I'm listening to the audio book again. I think it is one of those where what you get from it depends on what you're bringing to it. Not pavement, but rather how you're willing to consider the points it brings up. It's not as smart as it thinks it is, but it presents interesting ideas.

One thing I've realized is the movie is going to toss out almost all the fun stuff. I just can't see the film being this... psychologically cruel to the hero. Also, I doubt the first third of the film will have a 6 year old Ender.

It's... well, to be honest, it's definitely still under construction. There isn't even any way to link my page there to my actual page, the one with my content. I'll keep you informed as to if this things works for stories, as opposed to videos.

I THINK it's the other way around. The ending in Russia was to set up the sequel, and once the rough cut was assembled everyone realized turning the main character into a zombie killing machine wasn't working, so they came up with a more final ending. They'll worry about the sequel later.

From the Deadline article:

Beyond the fact that Paramount shares its risk here with Skydance Productions, Hemisphere and GK Films, Moore said that the 3D on both G.I. Joe and WWZ added nothing to those upfront budgets because those companies supplied conversion services in exchange for an equity stake that will pay them only after each film reaches certain gross thresholds.

Does this tie in with the Intermission on FX companies? Now they're working for free!

I don't see why they're stranded. Can't they just find a piece of the shuttle and surf down to Earth?

The first book also features a very, very violent Ender, while Speaker he is much more subdued and reserved, like the wise old man of the space lanes.

Yes. This is one of those books where it's going to be interesting to see what parts they kept. Having the hero kill two other kids with his bare hands, even in this era of The Hunger Games, might still be too much.

I fully understand boycotting the thing. Card hasn't gotten any of my money in thirty years or so, unless he gets some residuals from re-releases of the Monkey Island game. I love the book, probably because I came to it at the right time as a teen, but I'm more curious with regard to the movie than excited.

http://thedevilspanties.com webcomic has something similar, where a $5 monthly subscription gets you extra content. When David Willis ended one web comic and started another, he kept the first going on a subscription only basis for those who REALLY wanted more. So, it's not a new idea. Something that other creators can use so they don't have to set anything up themselves, that would be new.

I have to assume, as I haven't read them, that the later Ender's Game books retcon out the gay subtext in the first book. One of the boys was definitely portrayed as a bit feminine, and our heroes were fine with that.

Back in the start of home video era, Japanese anime companies came up with a rather intriguing format, the "Original Animated Video". As first practiced, they'd release a standalone episode of a potential series, see how it sold, then do another with the money coming in funding it. You could see the increase in budgets as they went (or decrease, as the case may be). That worked because, one, the Japanese were willing to pay $60 for a thirty minute laserdisc, and two, because the studio had other projects. They would just switch their people between them as needed.

I honestly think Gerrold came out of his experience with Star Trek Phase II thinking, "Hey, it's not that hard!"

As of an hour ago Shane Black is directing Doc Savage, another comic book movie, so ya....
Though I guess at least it isn't a sequel to anything.
Really wish he'd make another R-rated action movie though.

Doc Savage is pulp, not comic book, although there have been some comics based on the character. We've yet to get Savage in a good movie, but I don't know if that's possible anymore. Those old characters often don't update well, or seem palatable to modern viewers if you leave them as period pieces. You're almost going to run into the same problem they had with John Carter, as nobody knows the stories anymore...

Blakes 7 had a similar problem (old British 1970s SF). The Liberator ship they had was too powerful. It could outrun, outgun any Federation ship, so the writers had to concoct situations to make them vulnerable.

They were always fine if they just stayed out of the way. It was Blake's idea of attacking the Federation that got them into trouble. A ship is only as powerful as the person giving the orders smile

Card got his money when it was optioned, so not seeing it hurts him not at all.

I loved Ender's Game. Liked Speaker For the Dead. The only other thing I've read of Card was a strange book he did after Speaker about a boy raised to be a songbird. I've ignored everything of his since then, but go back to re-read Ender's Game. I'll see the movie if I hear good things.
