I think this is really cool.
hmmmmm
Here's an extensive review of the movie that I found informative:
http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videol … elancholia
I recomend anything by Bernard Cornwell. He writes historical fiction by creating a character and inserts them into historical events that actually happened. I recomend his Archer Books, or his Grail Series, also Agincourt (Azincourt). If you're interested in the middle ages, then I can't recomend these enough.
More from the rumor mill:
The Daily Mash is a satire site like The Onion. Just so we're all clear.
I did realize that; it just seemed mean spirited even for a parody.
Carrie Fisher to reprise her role...

Wow, it seemed like there was some real bitterness in that article.
I think your metaphoric scenario of your high school love coming back in town is spot on.
This is how I would describe my feelings about it:
Imagine your dream girl moves in next door, during your freshman year of high school. You become friends, then best friends. One night you guys are hanging out, then you kiss, and then you loose your virginity together. From then on you're inseparable, and everyone comments about what a great couple you make. But then during your senior year she starts to change. She tries LSD for the first time, and wants you to try it, too. She says it will take you places you've never been before. All of sudden, its like she's not the same person; dressing differently and hanging out with a different crowd. Finally you catch her making out with a college guy at a party, and you call it quits. You go your separate ways after graduation. Years later you come home after having other life experiences, and life is good. You still remember her fondly, maybe looking at her picture occasionally, but you've moved on. Then all of a sudden some crazy rumors start flying around, that she is back in town. Some say she got beaten up by her last boyfriend, some say she worked as a stripper for awhile, but the biggest and loudest rumor is that she wants to see you.
SO... I feel like I'm about to get in the car and drive to one of our old make out spots to meet up with her, and there are equal possibilities of her being beautiful like you remember her, she wants to make amends, and hump your brains out, OR she could be scarred up, on the run from the cops, and wants to con you for drug money. Yeah, that about sums it up.
Looks like we're gonna have an episode about this up tonight. No promises, but, we're "on" it.
Episode recorded. Coming as soon as I can master and make images for it.
Thanks for being so quick and prompt to address this, guys. This will probably be talked about for a LONG time.
Do you think Joss Whedon would write/create a Star Wars film?
I'm wondering what effect this will have on fan film makers?
That's a really good question. I would think Disney would be a little more protective, but I'm sure Lucas will have some sort of say. They said he's still a consultant.
I am amazed

What?
I'm going to leave the gun debate alone.
My wife and I have both noticed there are situations where people seem to purposely try to make themselves emotional, especially when comes to catastrophes that people have no connection. Things like 9/11, the Columbine Massacre, the recent shootings at the Sikh Temple in my state, people will do things like draw Batman weeping, watch the same news coverage of the tragedy over and over, go to memorials, all to purposely drum up sad, painful emotions. All these events are tragic, sad, and scary, but if a person does not know anyone involved why would they try to make themselves depressed or feel heavyhearted. My wife came up with a term for this, Emotional Masturbation. Instead of offering to help in anyway, they do things to cause themselves to put a fist on their chest, raise up their other hand with a kleenex in it, and cry. I'm not trying to belittle any of those who have suffered actual loss of a friend or loved one; they deserve their tears. But, for example, when my Governor tries show his sympathies to the victims of the temple shooting by wearing a scarf on his head, its just pointless, and stupid.
I thought your discussion was good, and interesting to listen to. But I have to disagree and say video games are art because they have the ability to communicate a story through characters, plot, conflicts, settings and journeys. When playing a video game, even though a player's experience may differ from another's the same story can still be communicated. Like telling a story over again, the story itself will change slightly, but the same theme and idea can come across. I think even when watching a movie, or looking at a painting, what a person takes away from that experience can differ wildly from person to person, depending on what one has experienced in their lifetime. Something can stay art, even if the experience of that thing changes.
Thanks for the discussion, gentlemen. I look forward to your post next week.
The Incredibles. Originally, I was only going to say Mr. Incredible, but really all of them start off well, their life gets stripped away and they have to fight opposition to come to protect everyone. The only problem is they get quite a bit of acknowledge at the end, but super hero identities do, not their secret identities.
The western that I know of that sticks out in my mind the most is The Quick and the Dead, because next to Shawshank Redemption, it was on TNT ALL the time. It has Sharon Stone, Gene Hackman, Russell Crow, and Leonardo DiCaprio. It's very cheesy, and I really like it. And some of other people you may have heard of appear in it, like Lance Henrikson, and Tobin Bell. Big time black hat vs. white hat movie. I surprised you guys didn't mention it.
I'm experiencing a small technical problem with DiF commentaries, and was wondering if anyone else is having the same problem or if I'm just imagining it. I find that whenever I pause a commentary and come back to it a few minutes later the commentary is farther along than it was before, however the time stamp hasn't changed. It happens consistently, no matter if it was just posted or if it was a previous posting. I did not have this problem before the website went to the new format. Its not a big deal, I just always make sure I can listen to the whole thing in one shot. I was wondering if there is some setting on Mozilla that I should change that's causing this.
For the first time ever, I listened to a DiF episode and disagreed with the entire panel on a point they agreed on, namely that Clooney was their favorite actor to play Batman out of the collection from this era. And I audibly said, "Oh come on guys, you're fucking *nuts*."
For my money, if you want to separate the Nolan series from the collection, Keaton cleans the clock of everyone else to wear the suit for one simple reason: He was the only actor that understood the fact that any man that would go through with the elaborate costumes and technology to spend his nights fighting crime must be clinically insane. And there's a lot of his performance that seems to have that in mind.
DISCUSS!
Agreed, accept I think, by far, Kevin Conroy is the greatest Batman of all time. Also, I liked the choice of Jim Carrey in Batman Forever, but I wasn't blown away by him at all, because I saw him just being Jim Carrey doing his Jim Carrey thing.
Since its on Hulu, could you do a DIF commentary on it? It might encourage more people to watch it. You could tell stories during commercial breaks. It would make a crazy cool double feature with Dr. Horrible. Call it "things that happened in 2008"
Great commentary guys. I really enjoyed this movie and made sure to buy the DVD because I couldn't see it in theaters.
I just wanted to add to your discussion about the fire. When there is fire inside a building it actually makes the room completely black. When outside a fire gives off light, however if there is ever a fire inside a structure like a house or a building the smoke will actually become so thick you will not be able to see your hand in front of your face. You'll be able to see the flames if you look directly at them, but everything else will be black. I was taken out of the movie a bit because of this warehouse fire. If there was that much fire in that room, they would not have been able to enter. Their suits would have melted to their skin, and their lungs would have been destroyed by the smoke and heat. If they hadn't added so much flames to that scene it would have been much more believable for me. But as it stands, they would have been dead within seconds.
I love commentaries. I'm like Trey, I hesitate to buy a DVD if it does not have a commentary on it. Some of the commentaries I like in not particular order:
- Anything by Brad Bird
- Firefly
- Back to the Future
- Karate Kid
- LotR
I was terribly disappointed that the Nolan Batman Movies didn't have commentaries. However, I do hear there are commentaries on a series of movies that are can't miss. Any movie by Uwe Boll. Apparently his commentary gives all sorts of insight into the kind of film maker he truly is, and makes his movies actually entertaining to watch.
What happened to Captain America?
Thanks for posting this. I just watched the Sweedish version of the film on Netflix, and I really liked it. Its got me desiring to read the books. I look forward to checking out the adaption.
Given a copy of the movie isn't included in the episodes, I don't see the problem. If anything, it gets you to rent movies you wouldn't otherwise want to see.
I'm in agreement with you. But I'm worried with the Entertainment industry having the power, they would have the power to shut down ANY website they feel is even encouraging piracy. I don't think DIF is doing that but if they do get shut down, DIF has virtually no way to defend itself.
Is anybody worried that DIF may be threatened by the SOPA act or Protect IP act?
