I find that i generally work better with more instrumental type stuff, than standard tunes.   big fan of Thievery Corporation, Four Tet, Battles (if i'm looking for more frenetic stuff), Eno's soundscape music for more mellow stuff (Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks / or music for films), Medeski, Martin and Wood is a great jazz(ish) 3 piece, or maybe Whitest Boy Alive.

But then every now and then I'll work to Zappa...but that can be somewhat all consuming, so do that at your own risk.

cool, i was hoping Premiere would be an answer.  I use the Adobe Suite daily at work, so i'm already fairly familiar with the interface.

stoked to finally be able to put video to some of my music....plus, anything that might get me out of "proposal monkey" role at work can't be a bad thing.

Thanks

as i've mentioned here before, i'm an audio guy, but i've been itching to move into video for quite a while.

I just ditched my 8 year old laptop (insane that i've been able to actually run audio on it) and picked up a new PC.  I want to dive into a new program and wanted to see what folks here suggest.

I haven't followed the conversations too closely, so i'm not sure where to start, what programs to avoid, what websites to pay attention to, etc.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I get dropped off at the Transbay Terminal (or Embarcadero Bart stop), but my office is right below Coit Tower...basically right by Pier 39 and all the tourists.  it's a bit of a hike.

Teague -  I work in downtown San Francisco and decided to put the Tron Legacy soundtrack on as I walked to my office.  I worked 1.5 miles from where my bus drops me off, so i was able to get pretty locked in.

Holy cow is that an amazing soundtrack to wander through the city.  Timing was perfect, lights where changing in sync with music, cable cars bells adding perfects accents.  Man, what a fun way to start the day...I'm glad you recommended it on the commentary.

Great ep.. loved hearing about the how and why everyone found DIF.

Also, i was really confused about why people up thread loved to quote David Lee Roth.  but now i know better....might as well jump.

So i was thinking about this over the weekend and was trying to figure out a way to just embrace the whole remake culture.  instead of rebooting/remaking a film, would there be anyway to create a story that utilizes the concept of a remake?  Dr. Who does this to some extent...Bond also, in a way.

I haven't exactly figured out it'd work, but it seems like there could be a way to plan on the remake from the get go and use it for good...instead of meh.

(and yes, this is not a fully fleshed out thought....so call it a vomit post)

for reference -
Outsiders is comprised of Twilight Zone samples (from an episode of that very name)
Acid has Richard Pryor and Simpsons stuff, who doesn't like that?
Shuffle and ....and i'm working cheap are both more experimental projects using samples

enjoy

and happy friday!

totally agree, Teague... i do the same thing when i'm working on a new tune.. i generally do some sort of "vomit take" and just keep playing till i find a groove or progression that i like.  I'll then go back and edit/splice/loop as needed.
I usually find that my first take is the most inspired, but can be sloppy.  it's about finding those nuggets and developing them.

Do offscreen actions play a role in  how you view actors/directors previous work  (like Mel Gibson and looking back on the Lethal Weapon series)
Dorkman Fixes it (terrible ideas/movies - he has 30 minutes to make it watchable)

i've got 2 different partners that i work with and we range from traditional songs to texture/experimental type stuff.  let me know if you want to see if anything might make a decent match.

Hey folks -  as i've said in the past, i'm a music guy that happens to be sort of a film dork and i'm trying to bridge the two.  I'm wondering if anyone has projects they're working on that is in need of some music/scoring experimentation.   i've got tons of random pieces laying around over the years that could have visuals added to it, or i could work off of a cut of someone's project.

my only real goal here is practice, so i'm not trying to take ownership of anyone's projects, just want to keep working towards figuring out how to tie my two interests together.

Let me know.

I was thinking the other day that this film probably got a lot of folks interested in becoming lawyers way back when, hell I wanted to be a lawyer after watching this. A Few Good Men is definitely up there amongst the legal dramas.

funny, i was just thinking how Top Gun made me want to be a fighter pilot...in fact, i spent the late 80s/early 90s wanting to be:

a fighter pilot
a pool player
a NASCAR driver
a bartender
a lawyer (times two)

fortunately, music and sports distracted me...otherwise i might have become a hit man or a samurai warrior

So for some inexplicable reason i watched this movie... it took about 4 days to get through this...thing.

it's by far the longest 1:30 movie i've ever seen.. i kept checking how much time had passed, and only 5-7 minutes had gone by each time.

it's insane how many things are wrong with it... hell, i'm not even a filmmaker, but my god.  first, it's all shoe leather.  i imagine it's essentially a 42 minute movie, once you take away the long scenes of people walking and the terrible excess bits on nearly ever scene (i realize you generally film a little extra so you can edit as needed, but i think someone forgot to actually edit those parts out).  and that's not even talking about the sound...it just drops out at times.

and then the camera work...wow.  there are times where the camera can't even follow a car.  the car will drop from view as it's driving by.   also, i'm pretty sure the cameraman trips at least twice.

i'm not sure why i watched it, nor why i watched it to completion.. i guess i was hoping for some unique "bad movie" entertainment, or something... but it's..just boring.   in a way, it's almost a perfect bad movie.  i'm tempted to make the argument that every single scene has at least one thing wrong with it.

like i said, i'm not a filmmaker and have never really tried, so good for him for making a thing...

I watched Big Fan not too long ago.. I really enjoyed it.  I remember hearing Patton talk about it being more of a 70s style, gritty film and i agree.  nice dark comedy.  The stuff about the Giants schedule is really funny.

Most recently I saw Brick.  what a strange, but interesting movie.  I loved the noire aspect of it and how it never really slowed down and explained anything to the viewer.  plus it had a great use of language and phrases.

some time back, the director of Birdemic was on Adam Carolla's podcast and it was sort of amazing how serious he took it.  he in no way saw it as a tongue and cheek sort of movie.  He spoken in fairly broken english, so it's possible that he didn't get the humor/sensibilities of a traditional american* audience, but man...from the clips i've seen alone, i don't know where you get blinders that big.

*i mean american in the generic, hollywood sense of the word
