That's amazing.

I agree. There's a "current" member of Guns N' Roses?

I probably will talk myself into blowing money on the DVD pledge level, because, you know, DVD. Luckily, the last thing I pledged for flopped, so that money is still available smile

Haven't seemed the movie, but that might be a botched reference to The Dark Knight Returns. Near the end, Batman brings out a tank and begins blasting the army of punks.

"Rubber bullets. Honest."

On a different note, 'White Teeth' by Zadie Smith, has some of the most incredible and richest characters I've ever read (the fact that she wrote it when she was 24 makes me... sad).

What's the Tom Lehrer line?

I tend to get to the new Who whenever I get around to it as well. Part of it is not getting BBC America, part of it is wishing they'd ditch season long plot arcs for a year or five. Part of it is also just being happy the show is back, and that is almost as good as watching smile

Life is ambiguous and often doesn't end satisfactorily. I do agree that artists that try to mimic that do so at the peril of annoying their audience.

The police detective is playing the same role he had in an earlier Lang film, intensionally leading viewers at the time to think the story was going one way instead of where it eventually did.

It is a rather meta movie, with the camera pulling back and Stones shown watching the assembled footage we the viewer were just seeing. Their reaction, to the footage, as well as Hells Angel Sonny Barge's radio call giving his side of the story, is what turns it from a documentary into art. Watching them honestly trying to remember if they ever met this guy who claims he was hired by them...

(the Criterion DVD has the full audio of the radio show from the day after the concert, a must listen)

I saw a report today that the BBC is doing a TV movie about the creation of Doctor Who. Great idea, the story of how something that wacky got on the air is a good one. But, here's the thing. They're going to be casting actors to play the roles of the original cast. The Doctor, Susan, Ian, Barbara. So... wouldn't it be a shame to have that, and NOT do a multi-Doctor episode of the current series? Think of the FUN they could have! Hell, if you REALLY want to tie up loose ends, have Susan in fact be the current Doctor's Granddaughter, and he leaves her with his original self!

(I so want the show, at some point, to deal with the whole Susan thing. You'd think the Doctor would have bumped into her again some time other than the 5 Doctors...)

I picked Fincher at random, my point is really "you don't just get paid more for making it in English."

Easy test: find out what Takashi Shimizu made for the Hollywood movie The Grudge compared to what he was paid for the original Japanese version Ju-on.

I'm used to them coming out later and later, so it wasn't until Tuesday was past that I considered it past due smile

So, no episode this week?

Well, kind of. People, once they're adults, aren't really living longer. That is, once you get to 30, you'll probably live about as long as someone a hundred years ago would have, maybe a year or three longer. The real change is more babies are living to adulthood. (and, probably, the last few years of life not being as horrible as they used to be)

Given the original story is just a few pages long, and never leaves the memory place, you can adapt the thing any way you want. Hell, from memory, the story is actually from the point of view of the staff, who keep finding more hidden personalities in this guy.

Think of how many Curiosity rovers we could have got for the cost of the F-22 Raptor program (a fighter jet that never flew and is now cancelled, at a cost of $67 billion)... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_M … -22_Raptor

The competition between the two prototypes for that fighter helped give us the incredible anime movie version of Macross Plus, though, so it was totally worth it.

I will admit, I like the 6th Doctor, Colin Baker, the best. He was hampered by the worst companions and some bad scripts, but I loved the almost anti-hero quality to him.

I'm interested that none of you made the obvious Jesus connection in the story. Spielberg, being Jewish, toned it down a bit but in the novel which I had it was more pronounced.

But why would a Jew write a story about Space Jesus at all?

Apart from the obvious that Spielberg didn't write the thing (he had the general concept, while Harrison Ford's future wife did the script)

In general, a Doctor should last three or four years, a companion one or two. Show runners, about the same length as a Doctor and ideally should straddle either side of a regeneration. Go outside this, and things start getting stale. Just the fact that RTD was allowed to step aside and we didn't get a repeat of the whole JNT fiasco was wonderful, regardless of how actual episodes are.
(for those newer fans, Jonathan Nathan Turner became head producer during the 4th Doctor's last season. He lasted until the show was canceled, covering Doctors 5 through 7. In the later years when he tried to quit, he was told he wouldn't be replaced and the show would be canceled)

Expectations change based on context.

For example, when watching 80's TV anime I know there will be animation mistakes. Something will change color for a frame or two. A cel won't be aligned properly. No problem. It's part of the charm. But, let's say I then put in Disney's Rescuers Down Under. Great film, underrated. But, in the middle, TWICE there's major animation errors. First the eagle feather is on the wrong cel layer in the nest for a few frames, then later it shows up in the bad guys hat before he puts it there.

Now, it's the same problem in both cases. But, the difference is, the second is a fucking DISNEY movie! You expect BETTER from them! What is fine in one place, is inexcusable in another.

Yeah, but Dark Knight Returns Batman is fucking nuts.

The adaptation of Year One was disappointing, but yeah, I hope this is good. WB keeps making them change the cast for each direct to video movie, so they can have stunt casting. I'm not sure Conroy would be right for this particular Batman, though. Not that I wouldn't want to hear his take on it smile

What is it that humans are actually supposed to do in space? Surely more than collect rocks? Colonise? Not in our great-great-great grandchildren's lifetime. Not with the technology we have at the moment.

One can make a good argument that most robotic exploration is just wasted money if colonization isn't the goal. Really, do we NEED more information on Mars? If we're not going there, water doesn't matter, and there are better places to look for signs of life.

If it has judges to determine a winner, it's a popularity contest, not a sport.

All I want, really, out of a future space program, is for someone to come up with a way to get to Europa's ocean. Forget space stations, forget Mars landings, forget everything else. Let's see if there's fish down there.

I enjoyed the episode for the seeming theme, "if you don't have to pay and don't care if you see anything, Comic-Con is great!" As neither would be true for me, I think I'll avoid it smile

Regarding the Torgo sighting, for those that don't know Rifftrax is doing a live riff of Manos: The Hand of Fate on August 16th. Check to see if your local theater is showing it.

Because that's how you now think the role should be. It's like the old saying that the Doctor you first see as a kid becomes the benchmark all other Doctor Who's are judged against. I have nothing against Idina Mensel, having seen her in Wicked and in concert in Buffalo last year, but just think she was miscast in Chess. The character should be... a bit more world weary. I view the way the Concept Album and Broadway actresses played it as the right way smile

(I will say I'm not a fan of Mensel. At the concert with the Buffalo Philharmonic, she demanded all the programs have pages ripped out of them before she would perform. You know, so we would be "surprised". Oh, the cursing from the 60 year old ushers...)
