I actually prefer Keaton to Chaplin, but that's not to take away anything from Chaplin - they were both geniuses.    It's just that Keaton's sense of humor is more my style.      Every time I watch The General, I'm amazed at how well it holds up.

Honorable Mention: Harold Lloyd, because of Safety Last.   Wow.

And then Zarban simul-posts about The Gold Rush and The General.    Awesome.   We should hang out.

Princess Bride is a special case, cause I honestly don't like it that much, but if you've never seen it then watch it, because you can't truly understand about 40% of the internet unless you have.

Along with that, the aforementioned Airplane! and the sadly yet-unmentioned Animal House.

Also, there's no reason to watch Chaplin if you haven't seen Chaplin.   Don't bother watching Robert Downey approximate Charlie Chaplin, just get a copy of The Gold Rush or any collection of his short films.

Also, Buster Keaton's The General.  Not to be missed.

And my personal fave Marx Brothers flick is A Night at the Opera, but Duck Soup (mentioned above also) rates a close second.    So, either.  Preferably both.

P.S. Gone With The Wind.  Especially since you live in Atlanta. smile

To avatar you listen.

And the same applies to Avatar (the movie, not the Dif poster).

I think Pandorum came out before Ark, though I could be mistaken.

Pandorum went into production months after we shot Ark, but was released long before Ark finally made it to Hulu.

Funnily enough, I randomly stumbled on this crowd-sourcing project, which also sounds an awful lot like arc: http://www.indiegogo.com/stasys-series?c=home

When I was offered Ark, I was reluctant partly because "giant sleeper ship where something goes wrong" was already a fairly tired trope (and that was before I'd even heard of Pandorum).  I asked if we could at least change the title, since part of the trope is that the ship is almost always called "the Ark", but obviously I didn't win that battle.

But at least in the "what happens next?" series bible that I wrote, in case we ever get to continue the story, I made two things clear:  the ship is not called "the Ark", and - for the most part - nothing has gone wrong.   The problem is that the characters don't know what's going on, and will have to figure it out.

Yep that entirely new Hunger Games, without any sort of pre-established fan base.

Oh wait.

Oh, are there Hunger Games books?  I had no idea.    roll

I was talking about sequels vs non-sequels.   Battleship and John Carter are based on pre-existing things, too.   Hell, everything is based on some goddam thing now, that ship has long sailed.

True enough - and those are three movies that I'm (cautiously) looking forward to.  However, it's worth noting that they're all also installments of established money-making franchises.  <sigh>

That may be the true tragedy of the summer of '12 - sequels (and reboots - Hello again, Spiderman) will likely do well as usual, while attempts to do something at least new are setting new records for failure.   Hunger Games is the only one to buck that trend so far, I think.

But we already know, since he made one.   Kill Bill is absolutely a superhero movie.

Well, the deck was stacked pretty heavily against him, there are only three female characters of any note in the entire movie, and not many opportunities for them to meet.    But two of them aren't somebody's girlfriend - and although Pepper does meet that description, she's a solid character in her own right -  she's Tony's equal and much more than just his g.f.   She's actually been that way without Joss's help, ever since the first Iron Man.

Come to think of it, Pepper and Flying Vinyl already passed the Bechdel test in Iron Man 2.

So Avengers may not specifically pass the Bechdel test, but it doesn't fail it either.    And I wouldn't be surprised if there are deleted scenes that would have passed the test, and were cut for time.

I hope somewhere right now, a bunch of nerds are pinning a young Mitt Romney to the ground and quoting Firefly at him.

well, on a similar note - I cracked up at a Tweet by Morena Baccarin a while back.  Here's the tweet she got, and her reply:

@hornydudetim u r so amazingly beautiful & sexy. u have such perfect cleavage, the nicest ass, sexiest feet ever u get my dick so hard DM me

@missmorenab Wow. You sound so cool. I'm bummed I'm married. Sounds like you could've been the one.

The next destroy-New-York movie should have a moment where the heroes walk down the street, looking at the sky in concern... and all the storekeepers start closing shop and pulling the metal shutters closed.  "Aw crap, here we go..."

  That was Shawshank.

Several lost commentaries got lost because long movies overloaded the software and the file-save crashed.

Waterworld, Green Mile, and Private Ryan are in that category, there may have been others.

It made more (domestically) on Friday alone than John Carter did in its entire run.     Ouch.

In 2006 Trey had enough money to not work for a year, and spent it doing post on Volumes One and Two.  Trey has only had that luxury once since then, but that year was spent doing post on Ark.

If I can ever afford to take another six months off, it'll be Volume Three's turn.
