Maisie just put out a tweet saying "I'll see you next year." and I just had the bizarre thought of how weird it is that the continued life of a regular cast member could be considered spoiler worthy.

Huh, I haven't actually seen anything else by Neil Marshall...

...except apparently the 2 episodes of Game of Thrones he did, that are both epic battle episodes and okay, yeah, that totally makes sense. I'm gonna have to check out more of his stuff, The Descent has been on my radar for a while, I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Doomsday (2008) (Alternatively titled: "Humans Be Cray-Cray Amirite?")

I watched this many many years ago... and as it turns out I remember'd almost nothing about it.

Short tidbit review for those looking for such things: A wonderfully, deliciously fucked up, little charming movie that is trying really really hard to say something.

I'll probably do a full review later on as there's a lot of thoughts going on in my head right now...but it's 3:30 in the morning, and I have a meeting in 7 hours. But just for now I'll say, when I first watched this, I remembered it as pretty enjoyable but overall very cheesy and kinda stupid, but on this rewatch it's actually got a lot going on, and the cheese factor wasn't nearly as bad as I remember. The concept is pretty cool, and taken as a whole executed very effectively all things considered, although there are some really remarkably gorgeous shots in sections of this, there are also a lot of sections where everything is shot very flat and dully, so the cinematography ultimately feels really out of balance.

Obviously this is going to be a love it or hate type of movie for most people; gore, urban savages, cannabalism, blood, virus outbreak and gore will tend to do that. But I had fun, take that for what you will.

Does anyone know of a good <$100 general purpose handheld camcorder with decent audio quality? I've been looking at getting something small and dedicated for vlogging purposes that I can use when I can't use my main camera.

Ideally I'd love to find something basically like a cell phone with just the camera part...and without the dynamic framerate...that's bad.

Weeeellllll that was awesome.

Fair enough, I can agree with that, like I said I'm curious to see what they do with it, since the pitch itself doesn't really seem to be all that interesting in and of itself. But I have enough faith in Roosterteeth do to do something cool with it.

And call it a misunderstanding of "shot in the arm".

So, original sci-fi gets a shot in the arm

Although it should be pointed out that the fact they're sitting at, now 159%, of the their goal rests almost zero on the strength of the movie thet're pitching, and nearly entirely on the fact that it's Roosterteeth making it. Not saying it will be a bad movie or anything, I happen to really like a lot of what Roosterteeth does and am curious to see what they do with the fairly... standard... pitch they have posted, but let's not fool ourselves into thinking this is a sign of some great outcry for more original sci-fi.

Didn't someone just comment about how studios are using practical again because CGI has become so cheap?

Or am I imagining things again?

Other way around I think. Using practical is becoming cheaper, so it's starting to make a comeback.

Hey guys, so as I'm going into serious preproduction on my short film series, I just realized I have no idea how to draft up a model/location release for my own work, as I've never had to deal with that before.

Does anyone have any resources/tips for drafting up basic, general actor and location releases?

I just watched the fight again. And while that might be the case for some of it, there are clearly a lot of takes where Pedro Pascal can clearly do the move, but the camera still cuts about 5 times in the middle.

Look at his entrance. I actually counted, cause I was curious. For his opening series of spins, there are 15 cuts in 12 seconds. That's more than a cut a second. I'll grant you it's possible that Pedro Pascal couldn't do that entire series himself, but look at the shots, there are only 2 or 3 where we can clearly see his face, the rest are wide to very wide shots. So unless there was some SERIOUS issues with the stuntman they're using there shouldn't be any excuse for having to cut that wildly, even cutting the number of cuts in half. There's also a lot of unnecessary cuts in the middle of moves, where even if it is a stuntman it doesn't matter because we couldn't tell on either side of the cut, it's just a cut to seem stylish but totally breaks the flow of the move. There's also some cuts that are very clearly Pedro doing it, just after The Mountain says "some dead man" and swings, Oberyn does a swing over his head to block, and that single move has 3 cuts, and in all of them we can very clearly see his face, and the move itself is only maybe a second or 2 long. So it's not like Pedro couldn't do that move in one take. (Unless this fight scene has some wicked face replacement and deserves a cinefx edition all to itself).

Actually the more I'm rewatching this, it just feels like the creators didn't trust the tension of the fight and the stakes to be enough, so they needed to just put the audience on edge with the editing, make it feel faster than it is.

I really want to see an unedited version of this fight, even just cutting the number of cuts down by half I think would be a marked improvement.

Oh right.

Fifth. Fuck you Peter Dinklage, making me care about the godsdamned beetles.

But no seriously, holy shit that scene was awesome.

Sixth. Jamie's face during the entire fight was so entertaining.

Well. Holy. Shit.

First. Gotta admit, I haven't been that viscerally effected by gore in a very long time. But then I do kind of have a thing about high velocity damage type stuff (as in, fall and go squish style looks, not really sure why, it just effects me on a whole different level than most gore -shrug-) ... either way, damn good job on that front GoT.

Second. I gotta admit, I was expecting a lot more from the fight itself, with the way the fight, specifically Oberyn's fighting style, was portrayed in the trailers... and the fact that the show and fandom have been screaming down my throat how FUCKING AWESOME THIS FIGHT WILL BE AND HOW TOTALLY COOL OBERYNS FIGHTING STYLE IS GOING TO BE GUYYZZZ. And then it just kinda happened, and continued to happen, and then ended. Obviously I get all the thematic stuff they're doing with fight and the kill, but I just expected more from the fight itself.

I think I was expecting maybe something that looked a little more like some sort of Capoeira with a spear, where the Viper is moving around a lot, and jumping all over the place and being very fluid, versus...well...The Mountain... the name kinda sums it up really. Maybe there's some sort of really subtle badassery going on that only fight guys understand, but compared to all the build up, I was kinda disappointed.

Third. Maisie's laugh may be the best thing I've ever heard.

Fourth. Sansa at the end, hot damn girl, work that shiz. (Also... Sansa as badass Sith assassin... I think yes.)

Otherwise, Game of Thrones remains a stallwart. Lookin forward to all this crazy shit everyone who's read the books keeps quietly whispering to each other about.

I didn't mind Last Stand, but I hated First Class with great ferocity. I honestly can't fathom why people like it or Jennifer "I'm Unfamiliar With Your Hyoo-man Facial Expressions" Lawrence.

I can't remember enough of Last Stand to even form an opinion of it. But I'm firmly in the camp of not seeing what the big deal with First Class was/is. I remember (it has been a while) having some serious structural issues with it, and it just throwing away any shred of credibility or in-world logic it had managed to gain with me. And then yeah, I remember some pretty not great effects, and the entire thing was just left me feeling..."myeh, sure, that happened, I guess." Not hate, just confusion at why this was anything other than another movie like this.

-shrug- Should probably rewatch it and see if my opinion's changed.

Thanks man smile

Although, I would have thought the exact opposite of trimming from the middle, that's the thinnest part of the entire thing I feel (Unless you meant taking the reveals at putting them at the end as trimming?).

Personally, if I had the free reign to, I would have rewritten the opening to be at least half the length, as it is, I already editted out 4-5 lines of dialouge in post. That entire section just feels bloated.

And that's an interesting idea of putting all the reveals at the end, definitely gives it a different feel. But to defend what Riley had written/what I was trying to do, the joke as written was leaning way more heavily on the punch-line of the pun, than the actual reveals of the acts themselves (as written we'd see the joke/reveal in one shot). Which I'll grant you is a feeble excuse at best, and only really works when you don't know the title beforehand.

Ultimately, I think, it stills just comes down to the whole adapting things written for the stage to film, in most cases being hemmed in by the script verbatim. As well as all of the actors being stage actors where the flow and timing is completely different, namely slower. It's something I'm trying to get the cast adapted too, but it's a work in progress.

And it played... alright. Not as well as I hoped. There was some good laughs, but the problem with the space they perform in, is that the acoustics suuuuuuck, so you get any decent amount of laughter and that's all you can hear. So most of the verbal jokes/reveals get paved over by laughter and get missed. -shrug- ah well, way it goes.

Latest Bullskit short, directed/shot/post work by me, again on a shoestring schedule. 5.5 hour shoot, 8 day turnaround from shoot to final product.

I think I'm starting to get the hang of this again.
