Good picks. I'm surprised Unforgiven made it up there, it didn't have a lot of votes early on, but I'm really glad you guys'll finally be doing a western. That being said.....I cannot fucking wait for Last Airbender.

Damn, I'd never seen that clip. That choreography is actually really damn good considering how much scorn the fights on Star Trek normally get.

(:

If you make mine "I Know Regular Expressions" I'll make a thread about DIF on the SomethingAwful movie forums

Jesus, not to keep harping on this, but their Battle of Algiers one is fucking insane

Well you know, they do have "secret" in the title.

Teague posting videos of his elaborate movie-themed parties reminded me of this awesome group I'd heard about a few months ago, called Secret Cinema. They're based in the UK sadly, but they organize MASSIVELY detailed movie screening events. Here's the amazing one they did for blade runner if you haven't seen it:

Has anyone heard of anything like that stateside (on that scale at any rate)?

Very nice recap, pretty much agree down the line with you guys on all of these.

I will re-iterate that you guys should really give Tin Tin a shot though, the trailers really do a bad job of selling how awesome the set pieces in the movie are. Its like a big apology for Indy IV, has the coolest long take sequence I've seen since probably Children of Men, and a pirate battle that kicks the shit out of anything in the Pirates of the Carribean movies. While it's definitely not great (the stakes are pretty weak, I'll agree, and it has a typically weak ending from Spielberg), it really succeeds on the strength of the action and the gorgeous animation (and Andy Serkis kills it like always, and Simon Pegg/Nick Frost are pretty good too).

Did any of you end up seeing Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy? That movie is 2 hours of anti-climax, and I can't decide if that's the whole point and I should love it for it (kind of a Death Proof situation), or if it's just really fucking disappointing.

I just wanna say, that Jurassic Park party is un-fucking believably awesome. That's downright inspirational, though I don't think I could ever pull off something that epic (certainly makes me think I should start aiming bigger with my movie parties though). If you do another themed one Teague, you should definitely post it cause these are a blast to watch.

Judgement day is inevitable. No seriously, sentient AI will get invented at some point no matter what, resulting in either awesome technological progress/human immortality, or computers murdering us. Just like nuclear weapons, its an inevitable scientific discovery, so its useless to try to postpone it. I'd prefer we speed it up so I can live to find out what the aftermath will be.

What's hilarious about that, is I used to watch that movie as a kid on HBO, and I would take stuff like that scene at face value and not think anything was wrong or strange about it, to the point that I completely didn't even remember that existed. Seeing that now, though....jesus, how does that even exist. Poor Sean Connery, this and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen made him quit (speaking of movies that you guys really need to do at some point).

I really want to learn how to build robots and Artificial Intelligence stuff, or at least try doing it and see if I like it.  That stuff's always fascinated me, so if I get a chance to work on a project in that area I'd jump at it.

Basically Teague, if I could build SkyNet it would be a dream come true (though I don't think science is pulling that off for at least 40-50 years, all existing AI models are basically incapable of adapting to problems they haven't been explicitly trained in).

This is a cool topic, I like it.

I just finished undergrad studies in Computer Science last summer and am working at a major tech company, though I'm not super happy here. I'm in the grad program at Stanford and am planning to move to California next Fall and study there, either full time or part time. Past that it's tough to say. I'd like to either start my own tech company, or join a small one that's doing something I'm really passionate about, so I'm hopeful that I'll meet up with the right set of people when I move down there and stumble on some cool opportunities.

Once I'm a bit more settled, I'd like to dabble more with film-making. I've messed around with screen-writing a bit, and I've actually got a horribly under-used by me T2i, so if I could have a few decent-looking shortfilms under my belt in a couple years, I'd be thrilled.

YAAAAAY! I was really hoping you guys would do Wrath of Khan eventually, glad it's finally happening. The Blu-Ray looks gorgeous btw.

To be fair, he had some books that broke the typical mold. The Great Train Robbery being my favorite example, and I'd say that's up there as one of his best novels.

I think in terms of must do commentaries, you guys really ought to finish off any of the ones Trey has worked on. Specifically, since he's worked on Robocop 2, you guys really, really need to do Robocop 1 and 2, those are pretty glaring omissions. Ditto Polar Express (it sounded like he had some amazing horror stories from that one).

YES!!!! I've been hoping you guys would shift to this kind of format for awhile now, the Intermission seemed like a really cool step in that direction. Really excited to hear you're doing this, I really think you guys can compete with and do a better weekly show than FilmJunk and SlashfilmCast. Also that LOTR cast sounds amazing, I've actually never watched the extended editions (and recently bought the blu-ray set), so I'll really have to hurry up and watch them now.

Really fun listen, I also want to thank you guys for delivering the awesomeness of DIF to us. I've been listening to fan commentaries for years and no-one delivers this level of quality and analysis week by week.

Really cool to actually hear Zarban too, his site has been a godsend over the years when it comes to tracking down obscure stuff.

Good point about Tree of Life. And actually, I'm not super clear on who actually receives the award, but it would totally be worth Tree of Life winning if it meant Douglas Trumbull got an oscar (did he get one for 2001 or blade runner? I'm really confused trying to look this up).

If Planet of the Apes doesn't win it there is no justice in the world. Transformers would probably be my runner up, though I really don't think they'll give it to it just on the basis of it being similar to the 1st two (which lost), and being a shit movie.

The biggest problems seem to be issues with the source material, as you end up getting a really weirdly placed 20 minute epilogue for seemingly no reason, except that it plays into the sequels somehow I guess? If you were to just look at it as a standalone story though, the lawsuit at the start of the movie just seems like a reason to get Daniel Craig to want to take on this mystery (which is fine, as good a motivation as any), it seems extremely unnecessary to go back and tie off the lawsuit stuff 2 hours later in the movie (though it is still gorgeously shot). It'd be way cleaner if the file Christopher Plummer gives Craig actually has the stuff Craig needs, cut to the media report about his rival being arrested or whatever, and then lead into the current ending with Salander getting him the gift. Shaves 15 minutes out without anything important being lost, unless again, this stuff is super crucial for the next movie.

As someone in the software industry, as well as the tech-startup field, I can add that this movie is incredibly accurate and realistic, both to the technology used and the general feel/vibe around software development. This was especially awesome for me, because I've traditionally been extremely annoyed by fake computer interfaces in movies (cough Jurassic Park). All the commands and tools used by Zuckerberg are real things, which adds a cool layer for people in the know, because it gives you an idea of how the initial versions of FaceMash and FaceBook were engineered (standard apache/mysql stack according to this movie). I really like that kind of attention to detail from Fincher, which also shows up in Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

I enjoyed it a great deal while watching it, and I think its a pretty awesome detective story movie, but I agree that there's a real lack of any kind of "theme" to the movie. It's full of disturbing and violent things, but it doesn't seem to be saying anything about violence, or what causes it, or how to get over it. Its tough because its a very similar movie to Zodiac in many ways, and Zodiac happens to be a masterpiece, so this movie just being really damn good comes off as a bit underwhelming.

That being said, I dug the hell out of it, and it has the best use of Enya I've ever seen.
