I seriously hope he gets a fine for misuse of emergency services or something like that. It is no different than the guy who called 911 because Subway put the wrong condiments on his sandwich, or something like that.

It really is incredibly stupid way to make your point, and like Doc said, it removes the legitimacy of the movement to ban cell phone use in movies.

I wouldn't think it would be that bad, as piracy concerns are still a thing, but apparently it is such that in order to make the point, you have to call 911?

I don't understand... hmm

Just noticed (and didn't see it mentioned) that Howard the Duck is missing in the listing. It appears in ITunes, but can't be downloaded.

I'll see what I can work out. Will be easier after this week is done since school will be done...:D

Also, aural, do you want an audio sample from me before doing the project?

Between that and a laptop mic, which would you choose?

I'm hoping to work it out with a friend who has a mixing board set up but if not, I'm opting to use a guitar hero mic in my work shop, with nothing on but the computer.

I've heard the Guitar Hero mics are decent, use a USB port and can be acquired for cheap, if you want a quick fix.

Not saying it's perfect, but it is an option.

Yeah, this line is great. I mean, the entire post was excellent but I love this line smile

Honestly, it's all what you said, and it's funny that there is talk, in another thread, about redoing another movie. The difference here being that Robocop is clearly a cash cow that hasn't been milked to death, while Stargate is being redone by the original creator.

Personally, I'm no fan of Robocop, but I get the sentiment and am annoyed at the mindlessness of the reboot.

Of course not wink

The movie has a lot of admirers on IMDb (and a lot of haters too). Looks like it's one of those heavily contested flicks, just like Scott Pilgrim. And like Scott Pilgrim, it just didn't work for me.

I thought about it more, and the best way I can explain it is that while I can agree that alot of what it is doing isn't "right", for lack of a better word, it's instead interesting to me. Sort of like seeing Nicolas Cage go crazy and overact in a movie. On the one hand it might feel very out of place and just weird.
On the other hand, it can be your favourite moment in the entire film, and keeping you coming back to the film again and again. If that makes sense.

By the way, if you haven't seen it, Tom Jane helped make a short film about the Punisher a few years ago since he really liked the character and was bummed the sequel (Warzone) wasn't made by him and Hensleigh. It makes me wish even more we had gotten a sequel with Jane. It's really well-made and I'll link it since it relates to the discussion:

Nicholas Cage as the Punisher?

Yeah, even as a kid, watching the films, I'm going, what?

But, for 1994, again, as a kid, i was still impressed by the idea. To me, the fact that Emmerich has always wanted to continue in this world, and in a different vein than the TV show is a plus. The fact that it has been almost 20 years means that technology has come a long way and some of the more goofy aspects of the original film.

I think there is a lot of potential here for Emmerich and the fact that it is a reboot means that he is leaving all the spin offs be, rather than creating HIS sequel to HIS movie. So, he just reboots it and adds to the franchise. If it bombs, the franchise is no worse off than before.

Edit: Also, what Squiggly said. Listening to the Return of the Jedi commentary and this discussion reminds me of this quote:
"What? You think that people are going to watch this on some sort of video device and be able to go frame by frame?"

Another edit (no need for multiple posts-that would be ironic wink )

SF Debris did a review of the 1994 film, and I get the skepticism now. While I am not a huge Emmerich fan, I always welcome a different look at a franchise. So, the optimism, for me, remains smile

You said it, Chewie. I wouldn't trust Emmerich with anything these days.

The TV shows, despite their flaws, were watchable. I liked the humorous tone of SG-1 and Atlantis. The long story arc of Universe was drifting, but I think it could be salvaged. Why not continue the existing franchise? It still has a fanbase. A fanbase that can be lost because of a bad reboot (that's exactly what happened to Trekkies after the J.J. reboot).

See, I don't get this reaction. The point of the reboot is to draw in NEW fans, not just rehash the old material. While Abrams movies were not perfect (by any stretch and I LIKED them( it did draw in new fans and kept the franchise going and made Paramount some money. It worked on a number of fronts, and the hard core fans who didn't like it, didn't leave the franchise because of it. They just won't see the new movies. They are still fans and, for them, the franchise will continue like the movies never existed. Merchandising hasn't really changed so, it really is a wash.

Stargate will likely be the same way.

The thing, for me, is that Emmerich had a whole plan for the Stargate universe, and actually had five novels written regarding the aftermath of the movie, involving Hathor and Earth being attacked from space. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stargate_l … elizations

So, while the argument could be made for lack of new ideas, I think that Emmerich is actually trying to explore the Stargate universe further and deeper than he could when the first movie came out. He has greater capabilities, and he isn't going back and making a sequel to Stargate, which SG-1, Atlantis and Universe, all are the sequels, so rebooting it makes more sense.

In addition, Emmerich is on record of wanting to create a trilogy, of fleshing out and entire mythology, pulling from multiple Earth mythologies, including Greek, and only loosely tie together. Now, he can create the grand mythos and overarching themes and put them on a bigger scale.

I'm not saying that SG-1 and the rest were not impressive; they absolutely are, in their own right. It is still one of my favorite TV shows of all time and my brother and I want to create SG team uniforms (yep, nerds). I just am excited to see what Emmerich wants to create.

http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs29/f/2008/055/c/8/Stargate_by_LeFurieuxRoidesmers.gif

So, while I can agree that a reboot is odd, speaking as a fan of the movie and TV shows, I would be more than willing to give Emmerich the chance to revisit it. There is a great amount of potential here and he already has ideas of what he wants to do, not just go back to it because he has nothing better to do.

And, I'm sorry, as cool as Teal'c was, Anubis guard from the film was pretty incredible.

We just had a whole discussion about this in the chat.

I think this looks like hot garbage. Totally joyless, and I hate almost every single creative decision in this trailer.

So instead of a traumatic, iconically violent death by close-range bullets, he dies from a car explosion, like something from a TV pilot on NBC. And instead of having his hand amputated, where you just have a face surrounded by metal emphasizing how he is a cyborg, he now walks around with his 2nd hand completely in-tact, making the suit look like just another power-armor suit. Speaking of the suit, they've thrown out an iconic believable looking design in favor of an awful, ugly, "hip" black-neon monstrosity, to try to make him look cool to 13 year olds. And instead of cool-looking practical models, ED-209 is a fake-looking CG effect.

Oh, and now it looks like Murphy immediately remembers who he and his family are, completely nullifying the entire emotional arc of the first film. The whole thing that's great about the character is that he's a tragic frankenstein monster, a man abused by the system against his will, who finds out who he used to be and re-discovers his humanity by the end.

But nope, instead we can have his wife telling him how he should be a better robo-father and hang out with his son more  roll

Oh, and its PG-13, so he just fights other robots, because if there's anything we having seen enough of yet, it's robots fighting eachother.

I was surprised by the PG-13 rating decision, because that really was one of the hallmarks of the original. Now, it was Paul Verhoeven, so maybe that was just his artistic style and the new director and producers are not willing to make that leap. It seems that the idea of gallons and gallons of blood isn't the in thing right now...?

I mean, I am no fan of the gore in the original, but I understand why it is there. Clearly, this is a business move that indicates that studios are more worried about losing people than keeping the fan base already there.

If all they need is a positive place to channel their energy, doesn't that mean they are basically redeemable?

Yeah, that's my question...

It depends. If someone REALLY likes dismembering living things, whether they want to be dismembered or not, and you find them a job where they can get most of that out of their system legally, have they been redeemed, or just had their evil redirected?

http://cdn.motinetwork.net/motifake.com/image/demotivational-poster/1108/dexter-morgan-hopscotch-corpse-outline-demotivational-posters-1313462731.jpg

In all seriousness, I know someone who will likely turn down a psychopathic road as they grow up and it is difficult to watch, knowing that some how, some way, their destructiveness and violence can be redirected, but for the life of you, you don't know how.

My boss commented that Dexter was an interesting answer to that question. While not necessarily a redemption of the character, it is interesting way to channel that evil. It doesn't necessarily change the person, but sublimates those darker impulses in a different path. The person is still the same evil, just acceptable, in some bizarre way...

It is one way that "Attack the Block" sort of works with the ending because it isn't that the kids are irredeemable, but we, the audience, do not see the redemption. We just see the potential. They are good but can have good intentions.

Interesting psychology here...
