Check this out.

I'm not sure it actually has a "live view" function, but I remember really wanting to get this back when I still had my D90.

Had to sell the iPad 2 for gas money last month, but between work and this year's tax return I was able to pre-order a new one.  Picking it up at my local Apple store after work.  Went for the same 16GB Wifi version, but I kind of wish I had gone for a 4G; 4G on my iPhone 4S is pretty impressive.

I was dubious about the iPad when it was announced, but the last year with the second generation has made me see just how invaluable it is.

Personally, I use mine a lot to stream media from my computer.  I ripped my entire DVD library for iTunes, so between that and a little app called Air Video, I can watch pretty much anything on my computer from the comfort of...anywhere in the house.

The only downside of my current setup, is that my otherwise portable Macbook Pro, is pretty much chained to my desk to act as a media server.  I think my next Apple purchase will be a Mac Mini to take over media server duties.  Eventually I'll be able to afford a decent TV, and I'll want a Mini to hook up to that anyway.

My heartiest congratulations to everyone involved; this is truly an epic achievement.

I was unable to be there in person, and was only in the chat briefly; I'm seriously tempted to just wait for all three episodes to be released so I can experience a taste of what it must have been like.

I won't, but I'm tempted.

Have I mentioned how epically bummed I am to not be out there for this?  Eddie's menu alone would be worth the trip!

Oh well.  Working too, but I'll pop in around 7 Eastern; should be somewhere into Two Towers.

Is it just me, or is there just over an hour of dead air on the MP3 after the sign-off?

Red: yours looks fine
Jimmy: updated yours, as requested
Tom: crap dude, you're way up there!

I removed a couple of duplicates as well.

If anyone else wants to tweak theirs email me and I'll just send you the password, or if you're terribly clever you can figure it out on your own wink .

If you do figure it out though, you're on the honor system to only tweak your own.

Here's where we are scheduling-wise: I'm off next Monday and Thursday, (2/27 and 3/1).  I work swing shift (1400-2200), so while I'm up for recording any other day, it would have to be at around 2400.

Anyone is still welcome to get involved; I suspect ultimately the recording will consist of whoever is available at the time.  So far that's been a...challenge.  What I'd like to try, and I'm open to other suggestions here, is this: post a time and date when I'll be available, and if I can get three people to call in, we'll hit record.

I'm off today, and I've got some running around to do, but I should be home around 2000 EST.  I'll log into Skype for the evening, so if you're available then and want in, leave a post.

The next windows would be my next days off, as indicated above, but for now let's see who's available tonight, and take it from there.

Dave: Anything to keep the conversation going is just fine.  I'll be acting as MC / host, just to try and keep order, but if you've got questions for the group, bring it.

Coen Bros.  I don't care which, but preferably something they wrote and directed.  Thanks to DIF, I can watch and appreciate Kubrick; I'm hoping they can help me with these guys.

I keep hearing that what the Coen's are making are actually comedies; dark, straight comedies, but comedies nonetheless.  I'm not sure I buy it, but I recently re-watched Fargo with that mindset, and it sort or works, I guess.

I'm not sure how related it is, but I recall the trailer for Burn after reading made it look like a fairly straight-up comedy, and I did not get that impression at all when watching it.  To be fair, I think I dozed off half-way through and never actually finished it, so maybe the funny bits were at the end.

The Coen bros. really vex me, because I can see the talent and the craftsmanship, but there's something there that I just don't...get.  Maybe it's that unsettling feeling I get after watching Fargo, or No country for old men.  I know how I'm probably going to come out of a theater feeling after a comedy, or a romance, or a film which depicts life-like combat footage, but I come away from Coen bros. films just feeling...uneasy.  I'm not sure if that has to do with something I'm missing as a viewer, or if it's by design, but it bugs the hell out of me.

Aaaaaand Jeff is back with a vengeance! Bravo sir!

I've only seen Unforgiven once before, in film class no less, but I'm eagerly awaiting it's arrival from Netflix to re-visit it.  Enjoyed that commentary guys; very insightful.

Side note: as someone who grew up in an age when the western was well past its prime, I haven't ever gotten around to exploring the genre.  I think I also saw Stagecoach in film class, but growing up the closest I got was Back to the Future III, and I've never even gotten around to finding out which Eastwood movies they were cribbing from.

So here's my question: what are the quintessential westerns one should see to get a good handle on what someone going into a theater in 1992 might have been expecting?  What are the "must see" westerns?

I mean, I know names like John Ford, Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, etc., but looking at all the films they made, and being so distanced from the time and culture that made them, it's a bit overwhelming to say the least.

Where does one start?

Jeff: Yeah, there was a short a year or two earlier.  I should try and track it down for a compare / contrast.

Edit:

Found the short with a bit of light googling.

Further Edit:

Yeah, everything in the short is in the feature.  The feature adds the relationship aspects, which go to explaining why Ben ends up with his ability.  I could be wrong, but I think some effects work might have been done for the feature to make what were clearly actors just holding poses seem more, well, frozen.  In the short I noticed clear moments where the "frozen" actor was still swaying very slightly, and I don't recall any of that in the feature.

Cashback

A Netfilx recommendation.  After a break-up, art student Ben can no longer sleep.  To pass his extra eight hours a day, he takes a job at a supermarket, and discovers he can freeze time, which he spends disrobing and drawing the attractive clientele.

I'll admit it up front, I was drawn to the poster: a half-dressed very attractive woman, the title card strategically placed just so.  "But there are also a bunch of those wreath things from film festivals, so maybe there's more here than wanton gratuity."  I looked at the description and reviews, and they seemed promising, so I settled in.  Now, yes, there's nudity, plenty of it in fact, but it's not gratuitous.  It sort of hovers between adolescent curiosity and artistic appreciation.  Those who have done any figure drawing will know what I mean.  I guess for the rest there's still plenty of "Hey, tits!"

The way the film deals with relationships reminded me of Eternal Sunshine or High Fidelity.  There is also something of Eternal Sunshine with regard to the time freeze effect, and a couple of other transitions.  Dealing equally with the mundanity of the job as well as Ben's relationship troubles, the scenes dealing with his co-workers add comedic levity, and help keep the film balanced between comedy and drama.

On a cast note: I knew I had seen Sean Biggerstaff (Ben), in something before, and was surprised and delighted when I remembered where I knew him from: Harry Potter, as Wood the Griffendor team captain.  I remember really liking him in that role, so it was nice to see him as a leading man.  I really enjoyed his performance and I hope we see more of him.

All in all, Cashback is a fun, dramatic, and well made film that hooks you with the promise of titillation, and takes you on a journey of curiosity, obsession, heartbreak, beauty and of course, time.  Well done, I'll be revisiting this one.

No worries guys, we'll keep trying.  I'm not in the best shape either after being up for something like thirty hours, the last twelve on my feet outside. Gonna slurp down some Ramen and crash.

Ok, good news: just got a job. Bad news, scheduled for Saturday.  Good news: off at 6.  If we can push things back to say, 8 EST, I think I should be able to get home and ready by then.

Well, that went pretty well.  Next we need to make sure everyone interested has seen, at least, the first film, and has a copy available to play during the recording.  If there is a director's cut or whatever I'm not aware of it, so we'll go with the theatrical release.  Get with me if you're having trouble and we'll work something out.

6:00 Eastern seemed to work today; what would be everyone's thought to trying for a recording next Saturday, same time?

Yeah I'd chip in for that.  Heck, with some Kickstarter help to pay for sets and burritos, we've got more than enough talent around here to handle the effects work for a new episode or two.
