They can copy rifftrax, and use a line of dialog as the sync point.

With luck Trey is going for the trifecta- doing a DVD commentary, a fan commentary, and iRiff for the same movie smile

Finished listening. I'm disappointed nobody mentioned John Huston's best role, that of Gandalf in the animated The Hobbit smile That's how I'll always think of him.

I divide those into two categories: those I know I'd like but haven't gotten around to watching before DIF announced them, and those I know I'll only ever sit through with either DIF or Rifftrax playing along. Chinatown falls in the first category, and I watched it a month ago so I could see it fresh. Lots of good stuff falls into the second category though, like Eternal Sunshine or The Fountain. I know they're great, but for whatever reason they don't interest me.

You don't think a liar is spreading misinformation about how to detect lying, do you?

Oh, like a repeated transformation sequence isn't nerdy sci fi smile Still, never having watched the show I assume you're right. Maybe they're doing for the same reason they do it in anime, to kill 5 seconds of screen time smile

At this point, could it just be considered a parody of anime transformation sequences, where they repeat the same animation cycle every episode to save the 5 seconds of new animation? Either that or they're setting you up for some joke at the end of the season, like in episode 20 they zoom in and suddenly the pictures are gone and replaced with how to do the Hokey Pokey.

It's one of those comics where I picked up the first issue, said "Hey, this is pretty good", then forgot about it until I later noticed it it had 20+ issues under its belt smile I've watched some of the pilot so far and will record the others, but we'll see if it holds my attention. Just because something's great doesn't mean I'm in the mood for that type of story at the moment.

Well, obviously The Room doesn't count as racy smile I'm surprised nobody has done fan commentaries for Flesh Gordon or the musical Alice in Wonderland, though.

It's a slow paced sci fi film that lets you soak in its universe, and that appeals to me. Moving on.

So it's another Dark City. Good! smile

Although there's something to be said for asking people who's point of view you know to interpret what's on those sites and not want to just read the ad copy. Answering "What is it?" with "Good" is just as unhelpful as someone who refuses to go dig up the information themselves.

You know, I hope the lack of talk about the actual commentary isn't an indicator of how many are actually buying the movie. I don't think I will be able to watch it until I can get a disk rental personally.

My only experience with zombie nazis is a horrible Italian movie. At the moment I don't consider them a plus in a film smile

I have to admit, after reading (iirc) James Randi's take on the film and those involved it's a bit harder to sit back and just enjoy it. It's still good and well done, but there's now an undercurrent of "ah, they're serious about the UFO stuff... okey dokey..."

That...is a really great idea. I'm going to Google that right now.

It came to mind because a) I know some musicals have been translated from French to English, and b) there are definitely some anime I enjoyed much more before they were translated. When you understand none of the dialog, you're free to assume it's all deep and meaningful smile

That said, the music is absolutely fantastic. It's everything that I want in a contemporary musical. I just wish that it had a decent story to go along with it.

Find out if someone ever translated it to French or something and recorded a soundtrack. You could enjoy the music without having the lyrics distract you smile

There are stage shows that take such advantage of the medium that any "opening up" of them sort of ruin it. Others were probably compromised being confined to a stage in the first place and are probably the easiest to adapt.

If you did while I'd pay a reasonable amount, it would cut down on which ones I listen to... which would probably defeat much of the reason you guys do this in the first place (to get people to check out different films). That said, tossing one episode over there for $.99 might be a good promotional tool. Some groups that give their riffs away for free also have them as iRiffs for those who want to pay.

The Mystery Science Theater 3000 guys... well, the final three hosts (Joel has his own site)... sell MP3s of them mocking the latest movies. You know, it's like 3 friends in your head smile They've also opened their store so others can sell their riffs through them, and most of what I blow money on are the better iRiffs. I'm hoping Horr-RIFF-ic manages to get a new one out by Halloween.

On the plus side, both official Riffs and iRiffs are now divided by genre making it easier to browse the back catalog. On the minus side, they're no longer highlighting any iRiffs on the front page making it easier for people to not find that section. Forums seem untouched...

The trick is to have it be faithful while not seeming like they just filmed the stage version (I enjoy filmed stage performances, but those aren't "movies").

I think the main problem is that SF, and space opera in particular, can fall into self parody so easily if not done right that few bother to be intentionally over the top. You have to take the subject seriously as a director if you expect the audience to buy in at any level. The same is true of fantasy, of which there are even fewer successful films (pre-Lord of the Rings).

In anime, there are parodies and humorous SF shows galore, in part because you have a large body of serious stuff that you can riff off of. Even there you usually don't get full on parody (as you do in Project A-KO or Excel Saga) but instead a mixing of comedy and serious drama, either starting as one and morphing into the other like in Gunbuster or going sort of half and half like The Irresponsible Captain Tylor. One of the more amusing things in anime history is that the original Macross TV series (known here as the first part of Robotech) was intended to be a parody but people loved it as serious drama.
