Honestly, and i wish I could discuss this more, the negative responses I have read all seem to hang on the villain, which I noticed in the Trek 09 one as well. I mentioned it before, but I guess I'll say it again, if you don't respond to the villain, you won't like the movie, at least it seems to me...

Teague,

Sorry that I missed today, all. Today has been a rough day and ended up in the doctor's office fielding tired children.

Hope it went well and look forward to next time smile

I'll take one November to go please wink

I'll be happy to do like audio editing if it can be done in Audacity...really the only program I have experience with I am afraid.

Can GIMP somewhat too. Also coming up with ideas of "what are you doing, movie?" over famous movie pictures.

I think I'll hold off on commenting for a month until I see what the new one turned out like. I don't necessarily object to a more action-packed approach, I just wish they'd do it in the context of something that felt fresher. Right now it looks like Nemesis, the reboot, and now this one are all trying to be the exact same thing.

Have them fight The Borg, or at least some kind of unique enemy (a non-humanoid race might be a start), you have a universe at your disposal, there are lots of possibilities.

I can appreciate this point but not the Borg-they had their run and there really is no good way to bring them back to the big screen without feeling padded.

But, a new villain would be interesting. I agree on that point smile

Summer movies? Does that include Star Trek Into Darkness because if not, I might need to watch some trailers to refresh the brain wink

That could be a good Intermission topic, Trey. Movies that would never be greenlit today and the "how did this happens."

I support this. I know this isn't the Intermission thread but my recent foray in to "Into Darkness" and revisiting the "Star Trek: 2009" thread I really, really, want to here a Star Trek overarching series discussion, from original to Enterprise, since Abrams has been hashed out and people died and we really don't want that again...

I haven't paid a bit of attention to this movie so far, and just now happened to read a two-sentence description of the ending.

If that description was accurate... yeeikes.  Promethean indeed.

I assume you're talking about

MASSIVE INTO DARKNESS SPOILER Show
Cumberbatch's magic blood? It might work in context. Certainly bears an uncomfortable similarity to Prometheus, though.

I'll spoiler this for my thoughts. Spoilers if you haven't read the prequel comic or Doc's comment.

  Show
I decided to read more about what Trey mentioned because curiosity killed the cat. I think the leak is a deliberate misinformation, based upon the comic that I read, as well as other information I have gathered. For one, Abrams has come a long way to keep Harrison's identity a secret only to let it slip out a month before.
Secondly, the comic actually provides a different antagonist than Harrison, and yet is somehow connected to Harrison in some way-it is left deliberately unclear.
Third, Harrison is supposed to be one of Starfleet's top agents and deals more with the darkness within Starfleet, rather than an outside attack.

Ok, spoilers done.

See, I vehemently disagree that this should be the case. You have a giant universe of infinite stories you can tell, and the only framework their capable of is rehashing Wrath of Khan for the 4th time out. The level of narrative laziness and cowardice is mind-boggling to me. Look at the TOS movies, there's 6 of them, and they for the most part all try to do totally different types of stories, and for the most part it works great.

I happen to like Star Trek the Motion Picture a lot, you take that style of movie and fix some of the pacing issues, and it would be awesome. It's really depressing that something like that isn't even an option. Would it kill them to make a movie called Star "TREK" be about actual exploration?! But no, we gotta have 50% of it take place on earth, and a villain Kirk can have a punch-out fight with.

Maybe Nolan's Interstellar next year will scratch that TOS itch, I guess we'll see.

This could escalate quickly, but I am glad to hear different takes here.

For my part, I actually like Abrams approach because he is actually dealing with the consequences of the first film. Kirk is captain, but inexperienced, cocky and full of himself. He isn't perfect or polished like the Prime version we know. Instead, he has go through a trial by fire and the crew actually has to gel under his command. Its a lot messier than the TV show and I think that is a good thing, for the most part.

Here's the other thing, as Marty pointed out-Hollywood is not as likely to take those risks. Formulas work because its a business model. And, no offense to all my fellow Trek fans, Star Trek has become a bit stuck it a rut. Not that Abrams vision is the only one that should be presented, but it lost itself in the formula of bad guy of the week, defeat them, move on, no consequences.

So Abrams, for all the slamming against him, is taking Kirk and instead of just putting him in command and he carries on Shatner's legacy, we see a man making mistakes, having to grow, having to be challenged and dealing with consequences. There are not many Trek episodes that do that.

Would an actual exploration movie be better? I think so, yes. I am tired of Earth being the center point, kind of like in Dr. Who series 1 when a lot of episodes centered in Cardiff. Needed a break from the scenery.

I maintain, and still do, that a show about the Kelvin and her crew would be an excellent show. I think that could capture the exploration aspect, especially with Robau's chilling comment that "There is no help for us out here." That is something that could be explored.

I honestly am hoping to hear Trey's thoughts on the Motion Picture and the direction of the Star Trek franchise now. Glad to see more discussion here smile

Personally, while I am not one who wants to actually go, I admire those who do. Its similar to the Moon-there were several Apollo missions and the terrain was a little less hospitable than Mars.
I think with Mars there is more to it than just what avatar posted, though I certainly understand his point of view. The point, I think, is the challenge of it, just like past explorers. Whether it makes rational, logical sense, it is still apart of humanity.

I don't think that the government should underwrite it completely. It will probably take a combination of private enterprise and public funds to create the project, develop the test parameters, training and technology to make it work. Yeah, it might take a little for-profit motivation, but that's not all bad. It motivated Columbus, Hudson, and several other explorers, for good or for ill.
