I saw Covenant.
Haven't seen Prometheus.
I feel like I should've watched Prometheus.
I would love to have that, were it not for the fact that I live with my girlfriend, and my flat is huge, and I have more than enough office space.
But now I want one of those.
So bad.
Teague, you owe me ten bucks.
I loved it.
As for the version I settled on, it was 'the final cut', as that's what people have told me in the past.
Alright, that fuckin' does it.
It's time to finally watch the one movie I've always been putting off.
Today I'm watching Blade Runner.
Is it just me, though, or is Series 10 in general, quite good?
It's not bad. I may havedone the center piece a tad brighter, to validate the glow, but it works. Would probably also help to see the colorized versions of the others as well, for context,
Adobe has an app called Adobe Capture. If you're subscribed to CC, you can take a picture of those shapes, for instance, and have it instantly vectorized. I'm sure it'll help with doing the icons
I didn't see liking an episode about, presumably, emojibots coming, but it was rather great.
30 seconds to mars?
I'm sticking to my pitch from before Capaldi; Rupert Grint.
I can't believe that anyone would condone CGI Tarkin. It was firmly in the uncanny valley and the ethics of the whole thing are just so fucked.
I had to confirm suspicions from a couple of friends that he was indeed CG. Now, us guys in here, are mostly trained for this sort of thing. We can tell a CG pixel from an in-camera pixel just fine, and honestly, that's a bit of an issue, that more than once has taken me out of the experience, and I hate myself for it. When Tarkin turned around, which I never thought he would, I was blown away. I didn't EXPECT him to turn around. YES it was CG. YES, it was knee-deep in the uncanny valley. CG humans have never been done perfectly, but Tarkin had a lot of people second guessing it, and some even not knowing, not putting together the pieces, and not necessarily being so much into SW they even know Cushing had dies, or that it was shot some 40 years ago.
Leia looked awful and weird, like a ventriloquist doll. I think the ending would've been far stronger had she not been there, especially considering how awful her only line was. Having Organa hint at her was nice, hell even seeing her from the back was nice, but going full Charlie McCarthy with her was just insane.
Actually, upon watching it a second time, she looks even better than Tarkin. Some people call it a dollface, Carrie was quite a dollface back in '77.
I missed John Williams. Also, why use the Skywalker theme anywhere in this movie. It's now the standard "ooo, epic moment!" theme in Star Wars.
I actually didn't. I love the soundtrack. Skywalker theme is also about as much a Skywalker Theme as Hedwig's Theme is Hedwig's theme these days. It's a staple, and used in wrong context, and I like it.
This movie is a giant piece of shit. Like the last time I was this disengaged and bored by a blockbuster was one of the Transformers movies. Who gives a shit about any of these characters? Why is their mission so poorly defined, to where the movie feels like nothing is happening for 90 minutes. Then they stage this big battle sequence, with mostly anonymous good guys and bad guys you don't give a damn about.
Between Force Awakens being forgettable and this being out and out terrible, I feel everyone owes Lucas an apology.
I think it's time you simply retire from watching Star Wars Movies. The general population found VII a good film. Hell, but Prequel standards, it was pretty stellar, if you ask me. Great? Nah. Fantastic? Nah. But it's good.
As for Rogue One? It felt like fucking STAR WARS again. And if that isn't the vibe you got, I highly suggest you simply jump off the wagon at this point, because this is the direction Disney is taking it, and if you ask me, and, apparently the general population; we like it.
Lucas doesn't deserve an apology. He directed ONE good film, and made a helluva great universe. And for that, I thank him. As for the other three films he made, he fucked up. Bad.
I haven't been this excited after watching a Star Wars movie in more than a decade.
It's a very, very good film.
Spoilers ho:
I'm unsure what you're aiming for here.
I think the only real issue I have with it is the price. I'm not saying it's too expensive; it's a powerful computer, but when you look at the amount of PC you get for that price, You get a semi-pro workstation. Which is insane.
Granted, you'd need to get a pretty good monitor as well, but still.
I don't know, I'm actually slightly leaning away. I know I'll be satisfied, but it's a $3000 laptop, which scares me. I could get a decent car for that price tag.
It's right there on the touch bar.
Thoughts on the new MacBook Pro (2016).
First things first: I’m getting one. More specifically, the 15", with an upgrade on the graphics card to a 460. It’s happening, and unless you can convert me to get a PC(more on that later), it’s happening.
First off, the new MacBook Pro finally did what I’ve been aching for for awhile now; reclaim the Pro name. There used to be a time when Macs were either Power, or not. There was the iMac, which was aimed at the general consumer. Pricey, yes, but not really packing that much of a punch. Then you had the PowerMac, which was a pro machine, aimed at pro customers, such as graphics design, video production and/or audio production. Same with their notebook lineup. You had the iBooks, and the Powerbooks. The iBooks were basic notebooks, aimed at every guy/girl out there just wanting a laptop with great battery life, and OS X. The Powerbooks were the same thing, better built and with much higher performance.
This continued for a little while after Apple discontinued the PowerPC CPU’s, and adopted Intel. The name changed to Pro instead of Power, and for a couple of years, it had a point to it. Then, suddenly, the basic line MacBook simply disappeared, and the MacBook Pro took its place. it used the same unibody design, but was in reality basically the same machines, albeit with the word «pro» added to them. It was about that time the pro name started dying.
The desktop computers saw the same thing happen. The good old PowerMac G5 was replaced by a Mac Pro, borrowing the same design, because, you know, if it ain’t broke; don’t fix it.
It wasn’t until 2013 the Mac Pro was redesign, and while I like the bucket, it’s lacking in ways of expandability, which was fairly easy back in the day. I owned a Power Mac G4 MDD, which was a breeze to upgrade. The bucket is nigh-impossible to upgrade after purchase, and although it’s a fairly powerful computer, the only reason I’d get one over a PC, is size. If I want a PC of that caliber, I’m probably looking at a fairly large tower, that simply would take too much space.
Anyway.
The new MacBook Pro is kinda neat. It may be playing a bit too much on the 2009 Unibody design, but again; If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. It’s slimmer, which means nothing, and it’s about 20% smaller in volume, which again, means nothing.
The reasons I’m getting one are many. I’ll elaborate:
Dedicated graphics card.
This one is about fucking time. My current laptop, a 1" MacBook Pro (2014), is lacking exactly that, which is too obvious when working inside AE, Premiere, or even FCPX and Nuke. The lack of hardware acceleration is very apparent when rendering effects for real time playback, and for a $2000+ laptop, it’s pretty insane that it comes with Intel Iris Pro graphics. Which isn’t pro at all. The new model starts off with a Radeon 450, which isn’t bad at all. I’ll await reviews to tell whether or not it’s a Mobile version of it, as it’s not cited anywhere on Apple’s websites. Radeon’s current flagship is the 460, which is available on the 15" model.
Super-fast storage.
Gone are the days of HDD’s, and thank the maker. Granted, my three previous computers have been SSD machines already, but Apple is currently using PCI-e SSD’s, which are super fast, which is nice for having quick access to files and apps. We all know what the hell these things are already.
The goddamn Touch Bar.
Say what you will. It’s a gimmick, it can’t work, etc, I’m not seeing it. Today, my workstation uses a MacBook Pro, and a Logitech mouse. I also have a Magic Mouse in handy, should the need ever rise. The good thing about the Magic Mouse, is that is has a smooth sideway scroll. It’s great while working in NLE’s, to scrub timelines. It’s also a fucking piece of shit, when it comes to working in Photoshop/AE, as it’s a fucking touch panel that A) uses way too much battery(we’re talking 1 month battery time here), and b) when palms are resting, the damn thing will randomly zoom all over the place.
This is why I prefer a standard issue Logitech, but it lacks sideways scrolling, which is a sore loss. The Touch bar is adaptive. It reacts to whatever software/app you’re running, which means in Photoshop, you can have it be a color switcher, and in NLE’s, it displays the timeline, for some uber-smooth scrubbing.
Thunderbolt.
Yes. I actually don’t mind the fact that the machines lack virtually every port thinkable. It’s got 4 thunderbolt 3 ports, all working with USB3.1(USB C) peripherals. This is a good thing. It’s thinking ahead. Do I hate the fact that I have to replace every add-on I’ve ever bought, or add adaptors? Yes. But to be fair, some of my stuff is USB2 already, which means it’s slowing me down already, and my Mini DisplayPort to DVI probably needs a replacement for a better monitor anyway. The lack of basically every port except the 3.5mm Audio jack isn’t *really* a problem, and you probably already know that. All your USB peripherals will still work, they just need an adaptor. And if you’re like me, you have a lot of stuff connected to your laptop already, essentially making it a desktop anyway, so the dongles probably won’t be in the way.
The bottom line is this; Yes it’s expensive. It’s ridiculously expensive, and if I put together a windows based desktop for the same price, I’d have a much more powerful machine, but then there’s the issue of the OS. I prefer Unix over windows. And while there’s an argument that I could just install Linux, and still be on the cheap side, there’s a bit of an issue with software. I use Adobe products on a daily basis. These all work with Windows. I also use Logic Pro X, GarageBand and FCPX very often, which means I’m pretty much stuck with macOS. Of course, I *could* stop using FCPX, and stick with premiere. But clients often use FCPX libraries, which makes it hard. I could also switch to Reaper, Reason or Pro Tools instead, but I’ve tried Reaper, and while it’s good, I also like the creativity I can get going in GarageBand with automatic drum beats and other instruments, that actually help me a lot. There’s always MixCraft, you could say, but anyone who’ve tried both, know that MixCraft sucks sweaty donkey-scrotum.
Of course, it should also be noted that I happen to like Apple’s ecosystem with Apple TV and iOS as well, both products I own and use daily.
Now feel free to try and convert me to Windows. If you can do it, I’ll even give you a hug. I own a gaming computer which arguably is more powerful than the MacBook I’m writing this from, but I can’t stand Windows 10, and it’s only used to power on, and start Steam/Origin.
I'm ordering one, but I'd love to hear your (un)educated thoughts on the notebook.
I'll write a more detailed assessment later tonight, but I'd love a proper discussion on pros and cons, and why you want one, or absolutely don't want one.
Let's keep the Mac vs PC discussion out of here. I've got both systems already.
yes. But also, I work in consumer electronics retail.
The Extended Edition episode was a great FIYH reunion episode. It was way fun, and for us, it was actually more of listening to WAYDM again, but this time we could actually partake and comment on the guys.
Did I help on this thing, or did I not?
I too, want this poster. Preferably on my wall.
Make it so.
I saw footage from that thing in a fan-made trailer for "Star Wars Obi-Wan". Wondered where it came from. Will watch!
I don't even know how to rank this film.
I had high expectations going in, somewhat dampened by early reviews, but I don't think my body was prepared for the utter crap that is Suicide Squad.
Now, don't get me wrong, there is A LOT of good stuff in there, it's just not cohesive or coherent.
Spoiler time:
Now, over to the characters. I've not read a lot of SS, but I've read some, and seen "Batman: Assault on Arkham", and read quite a few stories in which some of these characters appear, so I consider myself educated enough on the subject to have a right to complain.
However, most of the characters are pretty spot on.
Harley Quinn is pretty well portrayed, but I was missing some batshit-insane moments, to actually give her some weight. Don't get me wrong, that bitch isn't tame, but she lacks a little more pow, to justify the others referring to her as insane.
Capt. Boomerang is pretty much exactly as expected; fun aussie. He's in it for reward, doesn't care much about anything, until the end, obviously. Character arcs and such.
Killer Croc is smaller than the animated films, but it's not a problem. He's fun.
Deadshot is great. Will smith simply delivers, but struggles with a horrible script.
Katana is not someone I know much about, but she's not much in it.
El Diablo is also an unknown for me, but I like the performance overall.
Enchantress is a ... weirdo. Cara Delevigne performs better than I though a model would, but it doesn't help when she's driven by hatred to take over the world for no REAL reason. (Waller has basically caged her, so that means the entire human race needs to die).
Then, there's the Joker. I loved him. Seriously, Jared Leto brought it. His performance is very, very different. In TDK, Joker is an anarchist. As in "what would happen if all of this actually happened in real life?". In "Batman", The Joker is very much based off of comic books and the old TV series, which also worked out good, but Leto's Joker is a borderline psychopath, and I enjoyed watching him strut his stuff on the screen.
However, the writers fucked it up at one point. The relationship between Mr J and Harley is... complicated, simply put, but I know Joker would never go out of his way to get her out of a tight spot. He's not a hopeless romantic, he's the abusive boyfriend that loves her in his own special way. But the film ends on him busting in to Belle Reeve to rescue her, which irked me.
All in all, I loved the characters, the actors portraying them, but it all fell flat due to some fucked up shit.
Okay, I'm ranting. I hated the film. There's so much damn goodness in it, it's hard to understand how it all went wrong, but I blame studio execs meddling, as per usual. I wish they'd learn from Deadpool. Give the director some fucking trust.(although in deadpool's case, the director got next to no money, and zero trust, but without meddling.) It seems like DC is trying to catch up with Marvel too fast, and crams too much exposure in every film, instead of genuinely building up to the final mashups with great products. Suicide Squad had a lot of potential, and it's clearly in there, but unless there's a director's cut somewhere down the line, I'm done. I have zero trust in DC anymore. Marvel's getting it right, but DC can go suck a fuck.
The short version is this:
Don't watch it. If you want to watch it based on the trailers, let the trailers be your shining beacon of hope of what this film could have been. The final product is extremely horrendous.
Just a stale, by-the-book spy movie.
To be fair, it is based on a book.
I did have a feisty collection of DVD's a few years back, but with Blu-Rays and the likes of Netflix coming along, I've gotten rid of most of it. I just didn't want to start another collection after swapping my VHS collection with DVD's. I've got about 40 items on the shelves, most of which is box sets and Doctor Who.
