Great episode guys. Listened to it on the way to and back from an interview, and immediately went to Hulu and re-watched Ark when I got home.
I'm totally in favor of these "making of" episodes.
For that matter I'd be in favor of a whole "Story Time with Trey Stokes" podcast; Trey's got a story for seemingly anything.
No worries man, there's no particular rush on this; we'll figure out a schedule that works for everyone.
John: Don't worry about it; I may not have been clear enough about it, but I was simply suggesting Saturday as a test, not the actual recording. A dry run if you were, to make sure everyone's setup will work, get to know each other, etc.
Maggot: You're welcome to call in as well; we'll basically only be using Skype for voice anyway.
All I've got is the built in one on my MBP, though if this goes well and I decide to do a few more I'd like to invest in one of those Snowballs.
K, why don't we shoot for a trial run this Saturday (2/11/12) with Skype and everyone recording their own track on their program of choice. Since we have interest from various time zones, I suggest posting your availability in GMT/UTC. Try to give a good twelve hour window to start an we'll take it from there. I'll say from:
12:00 PM - 12:00 AM, EST (-5 UTC)
5:00 PM - 5:00 AM (1700 - 0500) UTC
Pro tip for iPhone users, search for UTC under World Time.
I'll try to have Skype open when I'm at my computer for anyone who wants to check their connection or chat or whatever. My Skype screen name is emfayder, or search for my email: matt.vayda@gmail.com.
I'm not sure how many people one can get on the same Skype call, but I'm thinking I'd like to keep it to four voices.
It looks like we have a pretty good amount of interest, so I guess now we're down to who's available when, and, to a lesser degree, who has a copy of the film to watch while we chat. At the moment my schedule is pretty open, but I'm thinking weekends are probably best in terms of getting folks when they're the least busy. Yes?
I tend to go with audiobooks as well fairly often. In terms of other podcasts, Jake Lloyd turned me onto WTF with Marc Maron. Lots of good interviews with comedians and actors.

Raiding the Lost Ark
I'm just not interested. Besides I saw Episode I like, six or seven times in theaters, so I think they've gotten enough of my money. I may go see the original trilogy when they come out, but I think I'll be investing in a set of those glasses that make 3D 2D again.
Thanks Zarban, that's pretty much the way I was thinking of going.
As far as timing, I'm in no rush, but let's say by the end of the month, or else it'll just keep getting pushed back. Also that way folks who might want to join in have a chance to rent at least the first film prior to recording. Again, ideally I'd like to be able to talk about the whole series, but I understand that that might take folks a while to get around to. I know I'd like to brush up beforehand, so I'd need a couple weeks myself.
Fixed (and anyone else from a non-NTSC area for that matter): We'll have to figure out a work-around, otherwise your copy of the film will get ahead of mine.
I'd really like to do a commentary for, at least, the first movie of this franchise, but also talking about the franchise as a whole. That is of course, unless there's enough interest in tackling all five films, but we'll see. What I'd really like is to get a few other members of the forum to Skype in or something and make it a group effort.
So what I'm wondering is, would anyone be interested?
In terms of format, I'd basically be aping off of the DIF format, since, well, that's what I know. I'm not quite sure how to do it technically; I figure everyone can record their own track locally, on Audacity or whatever, and I'll just edit them all together. What I'm really not sure about is how to get, say, four people from all over the place on one voice chat, but there's got to be a way.
As for my personal take on the films, and my motivation for wanting to do this series in particular: I like these films, and I think they get an undue amount of abuse. Yes they're gratuitous, unrealistic car porn, but if you give them a chance and actually follow them, there is a narrative that connects them, and they deal with some interesting themes.
Oh, there will be car talk as well, naturally, so if you have any say as to whether a Supra can really take on a Ferrari or a Charger, your voice is more than welcome.
I put this on this morning just to have something playing while I did other things, but I kept finding myself watching it. I'm not a fight guy; I could care less about boxing, but I really found myself rooting for Atom & co. Hugh Jackman has a bit of a hero's journey / redemption story which plays out well. The effects were very well done, much better than say, the robot fighting in Transformers.
I'd say it even deserves consideration for the perfect movie shelf.
Um, confused here. You just listened to the Alien 3 DVD commentary? Our ours? Because I remember being on that one. I don't remember Trey mentioning that he worked on that film, but my memory is getting rusty these days.
Wow. I had no idea England had such a bad rap, or was so self-conscious about its nationality. Where does the "evil Nazi person" stigma come from?
Over here we have folks who still like to display the Confederate flag. While there are some who genuinely believe "the south will rise again," mostly it's either tongue-in-cheek or simply folks who are genuinely proud to be from those states. They have to contend with some degree of "racist" stereotypes, not necessarily undeserved (some really are), but I don't know of anyone who would hide those colors on that basis.
I'm really happy with how this turned out, and I'm glad I was able to be a part of it. Looking forward to our next collaboration!
I don't know about anyone else, but the addition of the chat has made the DIF forum page one of my "always open" pages, and I've been more active in the forums since.
So yeah, pretty nifty indeed!
I know it's an Escape from New York rip-off, but still, might work.
^ Saw that yesterday; totally want to build one myself now.
We could use that guy on our next community music project.
Enjoyed the film, for many of the same reasons mentioned. Great script, great director, great music, well done all around.
Also, if you're a fan of Mr. Garfield go get caught up on Doctor Who, he's in a two-parter:
Season 3, Episode 5 & 6
I'm in.
Just when I thought I had a pretty good handle on the whole British thing; that one's getting bookmarked.
(Curious to see what bearing this has on the commentary, but it's informative nonetheless.)
Couple links for y'all.
Found that DMC-12 drag race (I assume Teague did all the graphics):
Chris Hardwick had Tom Wilson on his Nerdist podcast not too long ago (turns out he's a huge nerd, who knew?), in which he goes into some detail about BTTF. The blurb on the page is on the back of postcard like handouts he carries around for fans, and has answers to the most common questions he gets:
Nerdist Episode #125 w/ Tom Wilson
Many of which, of course, are also answered here:
DIF has done Blu-ray commentaries; I'm not certain, but I'm pretty sure that NTSC requires that the final output be at 23.976 fps.
At any rate, the magic number I worked out was 4.289%. I just took the NTSC commentary into Audacity, and used ChangeTempo to make it 4.289% faster.
I just set up a chain (action, preset; Audacity calls them chains) in Audacity to change the tempo and then export it as a new mp3. Saves an extra step, and stores the correct number.
Never heard any complaints about sync-up, but I sort of fell out of doing them a while ago and no one has raised a fuss about not getting them, so.
Haven't been posting a lot lately, but I had to make sure I added my props. We've got a great, talented bunch around here.
