@Saniss-that looks sweet! I have been looking at different paints to modify an airsoft gun. I read that a light sanding and automobile paint can hold better with the plastics. Just food for thought. I think the First Order stormtrooper equipment was cool looking as well.

@BDA What am I looking at? It's amazing!

I've always rationalized it as midichlorians are drawn people who are strong with the Force. And so they can be used to measure Force strength and provide empiric "knowledge of the Force" but aren't what actually determine Force strength. To me, that's the only way midichlorians can somewhat fit Obi-wan and Yoda's description of the Force in the originals. Still, I don't understand why they were even introduced into the prequels to begin with.

It was an arbitrary way of saying Anakin is awesome without actually showing him doing something awesome. The best comparison is in X-Men 3 when they introduce levels or classes of mutants. But, at least in that movie we saw Jean do crazy stuff with her powers, versus Anakin who mopes a lot.

Kylo Ren and even Rey are what Anakin should have been in the PT, in my opinion. Raw, untapped potential and doing things they either don't know they are doing, or, have limited control over.

Regardless, Rey's growth is not a stretch for me. I think it is another side of the Force that we have not seen yet.

If Starkiller were the focus of the climax I'd be more inclined to agree, but it's not. It's the characters we're concerned about, and that forest duel is incredibly tense for that reason. The climax is about Ren, Finn and Rey and where they're going as characters, Starkiller is just an excuse to get them to that point.

As for the bad guys being stupid: even ignoring the fact that superpowers in the real world enjoy doing the same thing over and over again and being surprised when it doesn't work, the First Order being stupid in this regard makes sense. They're slavishly imitating and idolizing the old Empire, flaws and all. Does that make the movie perfect or fix the fact that another giant ball is a dumb idea? No, but I just don't understand someone saying Starkiller ruins the entire movie for them when there's so much goodness in the rest of it.

I'm inclined to agree, though I have mixed feelings on it.

First of all, Starkiller base does bother me. Not in a moving ruining sort of way, but it bothers me.

However, the characters are great. I want to see them succeed, and win the day, and move towards their goals. I was upset that Poe ended up gone for one act of the film, because i honestly liked him. Finn is interesting in his rejection and trauma towards the First Order, rejecting everything it stands for. Rey is an enigma, and is so earnest in her desire to belong, and her reluctance to leave that is intriguing.

A lot of these are emotional connections to the character, so I understand that some people don't get on board with them. Rey, in particular, I understand a lot of the criticism about her Force powers. But, for me, there is a certain raw edge to her power discovery and Kylo Ren, like they are both unrefined and don't understand the full nature of the Force, but are growing in their awareness.

I think part of it is my willingness to fill in some gaps, which I am very much guilty of doing on a number of films. I think that Kylo Ren's mind probe of Rey revealed more of his knowledge of the Force than he meant to, kind of in a "a door open goes both ways" kind of thing. Rey seems to take away a lot of fundamentals of Force powers through his attempts to get inside her mind.

Also, with Kylo, he feels so unrefined in his power (I pity the repair crews in the First Order something awful) that is really a different take on a Force user. Again, like Rey, there is a raw sense to it that really intrigues me on a character level.

Is it overt in the film? No, but I like different takes on characters and that's what keeps me interested.

So, the story isn't that original but I love these characters.

Saw it for a second time today, with my wife and am finally able to get my thoughts down pretty well.

The Good:

The characters-I thoroughly enjoy the new characters, especially Poe and Rey. Rey is an interesting mystery, and I like seeing the "unknown potential" being unlocked and her past is left deliberately mysterious. Poe is snarky and sarcastic and fun, and is a great fun. Wish he had a little more screen time, but he made up for it in the last half of the film.

Finn is probably the most interesting to me from a psychological level, as my wife and I talked about at length the psychology of his character. I understand that the film doesn't go in to the details, but I think Finn was shocked out of his conditioning by all the death. The first mission is all about preserving order, and then the First Order slaughters whatever and whoever. There might be more, but I imagined it as a kind of "shell shock" that many green soldiers can encounter.

Kylo Ren is also extremely interesting as a villain, and I enjoyed the conflict that he is going through as part of the process of the film. He wasn't what I expected in the villain, which was a nice change of pace. He is powerful, and yet unrefined in many ways. I will be curious to see his development as well.

The visuals were great. There were only a couple of moments that I didn't fully buy in to (the Raptar sequence especially) but the starships zooming around and doing some amazing stunts were definitely the highlight of the film for me.

The story was interesting, even if it rehashed many beats from ANH. The characters who were going on the journey were the more enjoyable facet, so regardless of repeat storylines, the characters made it much more interesting.

Choreography-possibly due to being on this forum for too long but I really enjoyed the fights. Not just the lightsaber, but all the blaster play. Finn, Han, Rey, Chewie and even Kylo all had their own moments of just plan combat superiority. Han takes out three troopers, one without even looking. Chewie's bowcaster is a bit overpowered, and I thought it was great.

Speaking of great, I really enjoyed the lightsaber fights. I haven't read all the comments in this thread, but I thought that seeing Finn, Kylo and Rey go at it, each with their own strengths, and inexperience, was quite neat. There was some good moves, some great use of the environment, and even Kylo's crossguards. More impressively, no one lost any limbs O_o What kind of Star Wars movie is this?

The bad-

The ending...too blasted long with the helicopter shot. Could have had Luke pull his hood away, reveal, and credits. It was too long, especially since Luke wasn't going to be doing any more in the film anyway.

Starkiller base-ugh, it's the Death Star but bigger. And the film calls it out!  roll The only cool part was the environment provided for Hux's speech and lightsaber duel.

Rey being left behind-there better be a good reason or I will be upset. I recognize that I have a bit of sensitivity towards children, but it is quite frustrating to have no reasons, and to leave her at 4 years old!

Poe's miraculous retrieval-apparently he got better. I hope that gets explained, somehow, because it seems a bit of a "lantern hanging" moment without actually addressing it. Not really a major issue but still minorly irritating.

Conclusion
This is such a fun film. Aside from two scenes that I struggle through, I had a blast. For me, it may be a rehash of the best of the OT (aside from Death Star 3.0) but it was a fun movie. All the characters work for me and definitely left me wanting more.

9/10.

Pegg's and Lin's comments have been interesting. It has given rise to a lot of talk on Trekbbs that they don't like the trailer and are engaged in damage control.

I always thought trailers were now studio mandated cuts to show certain features, with little to no concern about the final product.

Am I wrong?

Sounds like the movie version of this forum...

The spice must flow...no wait, wrong film.

I wish I wasn't working 50 hours right now. Probably won't see the film until 2016 sad

Justin Lin made some comments that the film is designed to be a conflict of philosophies between Starfleet and the villains. Lin is aiming to provide a bit more of a challenge, as well as a looking forward, rather than back at the prior films.

Warning-there are spoilers ahead, so please click with that in mind. http://io9.gizmodo.com/how-star-trek-be … google.com

Thank you. I had forgotten about that one. I think there is another one about Arathorn, Aragorn's father, leading the Dunedain.

Having just started going through some of the BTS stuff with my wife after getting the EE, the Tolkien edit sounds very interesting.

Also, just to throw more fuel on ME fire, some one suggested they do an Aragorn film based upon the appendices in LOTR, since they have the rights to those books.

Thanks. I still might check it out smile

Was the movie any good though?

As a psych major, the "10%" myth is one of the few that rolls off my back now. I know it isn't true, and I am not going to waste worrying over it.

Also, I wouldn't mind having Trey's take on it. I personally am kind of done with the "didn't land on the moon" conspiracy theory but it seems to be gaining ground.  hmm

Well, you at least articulated your points well. I might pick it up out of curiosity and a bit of 80s nostalgia myself. The Goldbergs interest me for a similar reason.

Personally, I think The Force Awakens works for me, not due to nostalgia, but because it actually feels like a new film. It may not be, and time will tell, but I watch all the trailers and promo material and I get excited because it looks like something interesting. Maybe it is nostalgia, and I know I got excited for TPM in high school, but it genuinely grabs my attention.

One of my reactions to popular culture as a whole is not just the trending in nostalgia but the free availability of different content. There is no longer a wait for content to be produced, and so there is a lack of appreciation for what it takes to produce art.

It reminds me of a reaction video to "50 Shades of Grey" and commenting on how sexuality has become more voyeuristic rather than relationship oriented. Content is viewed but not really participated in. It all strikes me as very interesting development based upon the advancing technology.

TOR isn't nearly as good as KOTOR.

..I say, without much field time in TOR. I tried it for a couple of hours, and it felt exactly like every other MMORPG. "KILL THESE WOMPRATS FOR THE GLORY OF THE SITH! ....+5XP."

More to my frustration was the seriously lacking solo play. You would pick up a quest and be like, "Oh, ok, that sounds cool." Then, you would die...repeatedly.

For those interested, SF Debris just started a series on the Imperial Agent storyline as well as his usual review of gameplay-he had done KOTOR previously.

Favorite exchange:
"This makes no sense! Why didn't we do a scene to correct this?"
"We ran out of money."
"Ah. Right."

That's fantastic.

Anastasia is a mixed back for me. The animation is fun and lively and I think "Once upon a December" is probably one of my favorite numbers, period. That said, I can't get in to the story quite as well as some others, despite it being a rather interesting idea. The idea of trying to con someone in to thinking there was a survivor and the shenanigans involved. Rasputin is well done, and the rest of the cast is good, but I agree on the points that Cusack is not very memorable.

Enjoyable for the music, and the animation but not my favorite.

An all-girl band travels the galaxy performing for Starfleet audiences and any other gig that pays the bills.

You say that, but in one of the extras on the Enterprise DVDs, Brannon Braga says that one studio exec was really pushing for the ship to have another "Ten-Forward"-type area, and each week they'd feature some new band that Paramount/Viacom/Whoever needed to pimp.

I had a lot more sympathy for Berman & Braga after watching those making-ofs (in the sense that it was greater than zero).

I was about to ask if your sympathy scale had even registered before hand wink

Honestly, I would be interested in listening to some of their making of commentaries just because there is so much that goes on behind the scenes that audiences are (generally speaking) unaware of.

Gary Seven is a Time Lord...just think about it.

Oh man. I'm part of a Trek board and the fan reaction has been...bipolar, to say the least. There has been a lot of complaints about it being exclusively available through CBS All Access Streaming, but the fee is 6 bucks a month, so I don't really see the problem.

Kurtzman's involvement is, of course, polarizing. Given is long running history with CBS and TV producer he might have the right set of skills to manage this new show. I think that CBS will be very involved to get the results they want.

The press release states that it is not connected to the new film, but does not detail what timeline or continuity it will be in. Negotiating with Paramount?

All in all, I'm quite excited  big_smile

An ESB trailer recut to the music of the latest TFA trailer. Shouldn't be spoilery since all the footage is from ESB.

It is a more serious trailer than much of the other promo material out there. But,

click for spoilers about action figures Show
Some of Finn's lines that are prerecorded for use in action figures have a lot of wit similar to Han Solo
