You may be, I can't speak to that. I don't think so.  neutral

But, in unrelated-related news - WE ARE BACK ON ITUNES! FIYH, WAYDM, The Intermission, and Documentality! (I think.) Shabooms.

There's still a few episodes offline, for various reasons. Once they go back online, the links will work again.

Hollllld. Hooooooolllllld!

Coming up on it, now.

Less than two weeks out, and I want to spend the last week fleshing out my top seven songs. Additionally, I should really have that process done much sooner, so Alex can get to thinkin' about the instrumentation on the songs we're going to do.

As of right now, I have fourteen new-song snippets, and probably five old songs I could drudge up and do properly for the album. Today I'm going to write at least one more song, and start thinking in terms of narrowing it down. One more song.

Last night, my friend Meghan came over and we came up with more song names, which is really a fun activity in a group setting. I now have probably 250 song names all in, and I've loved the process I've come up with for writing songs to fit weird titles as opposed to writing titles to explain weird songs. It feels right. It also opens up the ideas tremendously and gets me out of my own way. And, because at the end of the day you're just writing songs that you think are good, you end up putting just as much of yourself and your worldview into them as you would any other way.

Here's some of my favorite names from last night's song titling session.

I Have Some Things to Say About Your Sister
Gabriel Is A Negative Zone Of Game
Alone With Our Genitals
Limp Dick Christmas Lights
Poorly Laid Plans And Hospital Visits
Six Things I Learned At Logan's Birthday
A Week Long Celebration Of Your Ass In Those Jeans
Bottomless Mimosas At San Quentin
This Rock Star Life Ain't Gonna Live Itself
Asexual Fetish
Costume Party For One
An Eventually Fatal Misunderstanding Involving Bill Nye and Bill Nighy

This board is for creative storytelling.

On these here podcasts, we love to look at a movie (or other creative project) and figure out if something isn't working. Sometimes it's obvious, and the problem with Sucker Punch is... Zack Snyder writing Sucker Punch. Sometimes it's less obvious, and it's "okay, Sucker Punch had a semi-interesting idea that they completely failed to express coherently, but here's the better version of what I think they were going for."

Whatever the problem is, whether it's something everyone agrees with or it's just your problem, isolating it is tricky. Solving it is trickier. And we love tricky shit.

So we aim to get in the habit of creative problem solving, and break the habit of just shitting on something and moving on. In the real world, you don't have to be a chef to know when a steak is crappy. But on this board, we challenge you to make a better steak. Because it's fun.

Sample post format for new threads:

Topic Title:

"[username's] [Fix, or Rewrite] For [Project]"

Post body:

[Introduction]

[Isolated Problems with Project]

[Proposed Solutions for Problems]

[Script Treatment of New Interpretation]

This isn't a rule, but a guideline. Do whatever you want.

As for "pitches," it's just what it sounds like. Maybe you're not Monday Morning Quarterbacking an existing film or franchise, maybe you have an idea for a way to handle a reboot, or an entirely new story. We are in. Post it. Start the conversation.

The only thing we want to discourage is two-sentence topic posts, like "Liar Liar, with Bryan Cranston playing every role." Come on. Exercise some brain muscles. New movies, old movies, any movie you've ever had a problem with - figure out your problem, and figure out a solution.

And show your work.

It's the sort of thing that doesn't make sense until it does. Like innuendo. Or gin.

Yeah. It's also the one where Mike learned the pleasure of drinking Malibu Rum from the bottle.

Trey: "Ooookay, no more drinking game for Michael..."

Mike: "IT IS NO LONGER A GAME"

Just randomly listened to some of this commentary in the car today, and was dying laughing. I think this might be one of our funniest episodes. Hoof.

Some of you already know about an article I recently wrote (and didn't publicize, heh) about an experience I had on Reddit. Without giving too much away, it was fucking nuts.

Anyway, just for funsies and because I have the equipment, I've put together an "audiobook" sort of version of it, because I had always wanted to try such a thing.

Unabridged, about forty minutes long.

Enjoy.

This is a really fun episode.

Yes, they cost TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS YOU HAVE THREE DAYS PEOPLE GO GO GO.

I'm liking this Kickstarter joke.

Anyway, no, can add as many boards as I want. I could add a board called "Everybody Shit on Saniss" and it would mean nothing to me. Fear me.

What would you guys think about (more specifically, would anyone actually use) a board on here, like Reviews, called Pitches and Rewrites? It'd be along the same lines as Reviews, but more in the vein of what Jake posted in his awesome "Mending Steel" thread.

I mean, it's one of our favorite things to do around here, really trying to figure out the central reason a movie doesn't work right, and then figure out a clever solution for that problem, whether it's tone or motivation or plotting or whatever. And it can be done for pretty much any movie that isn't perfect, so there's a lot to be done with such a thing.

I'm imagining a semi-default framework for a thread being something like

"Movie Title Fix by User"

Movie Title

My specific problems with it, and why I think they're problems

Medium-length treatment write-up of my "draft"

And discussion would ensue.

Bear in mind, we all like reading these things when they happen, but what I'm really curious about is how many of y'all would actually enjoy posting a thing on at least a monthly basis. New movies, old movies, whatever. Would that get any use?

Pft. Disowned my ass. We were just waiting to see how your Vine videos turned out.

Also, for my money, you destroyed this. Super cool.

Update: I think I just wrote my new favorite song.

Not, like, favorite song of what I've written. My new favorite song.

It's called "I Feel More Like A Leonard."

Any movie, doesn't matter, I'll post act one from it.

Any movie, doesn't matter, you'll post act two from it.

Any movie, doesn't matter, they'll post act three from it.

Let's see what happens. The only stipulation is try to maintain the same characters throughout the frankenmovie. I'll change the names from my movie; keep using my protagonist and add names as you need to.

Act I

Barney works at his dad's store, filling up the hours, selling what they sell... but his passion lies in music. At night he practices his instrument in the back room, playing along to old records, and generally not doing anything with his talent. His girlfriend Betty is growing bored with him. Some of his old friends have formed a band, written an original song, and booked a gig at a talent show... but one of them has broken an arm and can't play. Barney agrees to play in his place, invites Betty to watch, and when they get onstage he changes the tempo of the song without warning and effectively turns the ballad into a pop song. The place goes nuts. Betty is impressed. The band is divided over whether to be pissed about the change, or to be excited that - holy shit - they just got offered a steady gig! In any case, things are looking up!

I feel like I just heard their side.

Someone mentioned this article recently - Trey, maybe? - and it's the sort of stuff we always talk about, but still, reading it was eye-opening.

Yeesh. Sell your stocks, everyone. Also if anyone wants to come build cabinets with me in Idaho, plane tickets are still available.

I am not fully opposed to naming the album some permutation of this thread title.

Anyway.

Since said breakthrough, I've gotten down about ten Worthwhile Song Snippets, wherein I've figured out a tonic space (chord progression, melody area, harmony area) and a "voice" for a particular song idea, and fleshed it out to at least a verse and a chorus to remind myself later what such a song would be like. This is my new strategy: from my list of fifty song titles, I want to get twenty song snippets down by one week before I leave for Boston. (Which is now happening on the 8th, so I wanna be done with twenty snippets by Monday the 1st.) At this point, I'll either whittle down what I have to my ten favorite ideas, or just send all twenty as-is to Andy and Alex, and see which ones they think have the most potential.

In any case, over-deliver a week in advance, and spend the last week tightening up the "selects." By the end of that period, I hope to have seven Fully Written Songs to take with me to Boston, from which we'll pick the best five or so for the album. (And presumably they'll end up going through a couple more rewrites through the rehearsal / tracking process.) As I said, I've got ten so far; ten proto-songs. If you've hung out in the live chat, you know the song "Mister Perfect?" Like that. Enough of a song that you know what the song is, but only about fifty seconds long.

It's worth noting that I consider getting to Worthwhile Song Snippet phase the hard part - after you have that stuff, it's just a matter of writing more words and a bridge. Much easier than coming up with the functional bits of the basic song construction. For me, anyway. (Faking this, remember?)

Since I'm in the spirit of sharing, I'll give ya ten song titles. Who knows if you'll ever hear any of these, or if they'll have the same name when you do.

I'm Not Crazy About Radiohead
Writing A Letter (To Your Mom and Dad)
This Pen Sucks
When Will You Be The Past
I Like Your Stupid Face Just In General
It's Not You, It's Her
Some Kind Of Calamity
Recently Outlawed Hairdos
Little Kid With A Gun
The Insidious Communist Propaganda of Steve*

*thanks to Dorkman, for inspiring this song title in the Nightmare Before Christmas commentary

Of these, gun to my head, my top three are Writing A Letter, Recently Outlawed Hairdos, and Some Kind Of Calamity. (Honorable mention to This Pen Sucks.) But it's impossible to say. This represents at most half of what the spread will be when I start whittling it down, which means the next five songs I write could be my new five favorites, and then that again, and these wouldn't make it into the top ten.

Or the rest will suck. Who knows. Anyway, happy with the progress. God help me.

Also, planning on taking a nice video camera with me to document the Boston parts of this in video, so if anyone wants to donate a nice camera to the cause, I'll ship it back to ya when I'm done.

I'm serious. Mail me a camera. She won't get a scratch.
