Nice. The more we get into this, the more I love it, you guys are fantastic. Now we just need to get some more players in here. Teague, you know you wanna.  wink

We ran through some trial combat, did a little back story stuff and generally had a good time. Several people who said they wanted in have yet to make a showing, you guys still in? Are there people interested who haven't made it to a session yet?

Work ran late and I still haven't eaten, so we'll probably be starting late, sorry.

EDIT: Disregard that, new plan: Start now and I disappear to eat dinner for a bit in the middle.

Did you get the vocal take I sent you?

That. Is. Fucking. Awesome. +1 to Boter.

Yup, plan is same time tomorrow. Looking forward to it.

This week we got characters rolled up for Boter, BDA, and Herc. Next week we'll do characters for everyone who couldn't make this session and probably do some test combat.

Well, there was the Fig reference for us TFNers.  wink

Backing up what Boter said, there is absolutely nothing stopping you from creating a character who looks and acts exactly like Teague. He can even be named Teague. We'll have to do some character building in the sense that we'll need to assign numbers to what fictional Shadowrun Teague is and isn't good at, but we don't necessarily have to build the character of your character, that can just be you, if you wish.

Shadowrun is actually particularly good for this, as you don't really chose a "class" to be, you just make a person with a particular set of skills and talents, i.e. you're not making a wizard or a barbarian, with set skills and roles and trappings of what it means to be a wizard or barbarian. Instead, you might making someone who's good at talking to people, can pick a lock if he needs to, is handy with a shotgun, and happens to have a little magical talent in his back pocket just in case.

I'm pretty experienced with this stuff, and I can get a good sense of a system by reading the rules, but even for me things don't entirely click until I've played it.

Ok, so far I've only got contact info for BDA and Botor, c'mon people. Owen? Herc? Fireproof? Teague? Eddie? Don't leave me hangin'.

My first introduction to D&D was 3.5 edition. The DM had pre-generated us some level 1 characters, but forgot to bring his core rulebook along, so we couldn't even give the rules a quick read to know what was up. He did his best to explain the rules to us, handed out the characters, then threw us straight into Tomb of Horrors. In laymans terms, this is like deciding to take swimming lessons for the first time, so they sail you out into the middle of the ocean, kick you off the boat, and scream at you to tread water. We didn't get very far. Somehow I still had a fantastic time.

I'll probably start around 5-6 my time (CST) and run until whenever. This is my Google+ page, if you add me on there I can add you back so on monday I can add you to the Hangout. So far the only person I've got is BDA.

Technically, since the podcast is done and the forum isn't really attached to a project anymore, everything is off topic.

There are also Shadowrun novels if you want to read some of them. I enjoyed the few I've read, and have been told that for the most part they're all good.

We're playing 5th Edition, as that's what I have the books for. Here's a dropbox link for the pdf. I recommend at least reading the Shadowrun Concepts chapter (Page 44) and the Combat chapter (page 158). Don't let it intimidate you! It might seem confusing and complex at first, but don't worry, I will run everyone through some example combats before we start and make sure everyone understands how it works. It looks more complicated on paper that it is to play. People looking for some more reading and or are planning to make a decker or technomancer, a rigger, or a magic user might want to read The Matrix (page 214), Riggers (page 264), or Magic (page 276) respectively. One of the things I love about this book is it just hase several short stories interspersed between the heavier stuff, so if you're looking to just get a sense of the world, give those a read.

Shadowrun is pure D6 (six sided die). It uses lots of them though, it's a success based system (instead of rolling a few dice and adding up the numbers, you roll lots of dice and determine whether each die counts as a success or not (in this case a 5 or 6 is a success) and count up successes).

I'm thinking we should play Shadowrun. It's setting is a future cyberpunky world, but with magic! If people could start sending me their google hangouts info, next monday I'll grab anyone who's online and we can work out some logistical stuff like roll20 extensions and stuff and I can answer questions and we can get some character rolling out of the way.

Yeah, unless you happen to be free on Tuesday mornings your time, it probably wont work out.

I've never done RIFTS but from what I've read it sounds like it's my kinda thing.

Don't worry, I've found that giving players absolutely zero direction typically results in a lot of frustration for everyone. smile When we get things like setting figured out more we can figure out how we want to do this. Do you want to be a group formed with a purpose (e.g. we banded together to kill the BBEG), or would you rather have me pull you into a larger story as you go (e.g. you're pirates but the artifact you stole has much more significance than the money it's worth)?

Also, lets narrow Sci-Fi down more. Space Opera? Hard Sci-Fi? Sci-Fi with magic? Far far future or not that far away? Space travel?

2 hour sections would be enough - it's not overwhelming to GM, it gives everyone a taste, and you have a week to prepare for the next one.

Don't worry about overwhelming me, I've done 10+ hours sessions with 15+ people, parties split into 5(!) groups, and built full dungeons on the fly with zero prep. Note: While I can put you guys on rails and run you through encounter I've built beforehand, my preferred style is more open world and improv-y. What would you guys prefer, rails or a sandbox?

I've edited into the OP, but I'll put it here too. Some record keeping:

Owen, Star Wars or Original, something beginner friendly, any time (BST)

BDA, Preference Sci-Fi (maybe cyberpunk?), something beginner friendly, not Saturdays (MST)

Herc, Preference Fantasy, beginner but down for whatever, EST evenings

Botor, Preference Sci-Fi, experienced

Teague?

Fireproof, Preference Sci-Fi (maybe cyberpunk?)

Faldor, , beginner

Dave?

Eddie?

Right now it looks like the sci-fi's have it. Looking like 7-8 people, not a bad size. Availability seems to suggest weekday evenings work best. How do y'all feel about Mondays?

(149 replies, posted in Friends in Your Dungeon)

To clarify, 2-3 hours is definitely enough time to get things done, 10 hours is not the norm.

221

(149 replies, posted in Friends in Your Dungeon)

Just so people are aware, Tom is not exaggerating, I've had sessions go 10+ hours long. How long we want to have sessions go is a discussion we need to have. note, combat takes more time than role play, so if we want to focus around dungeon crawling and wacking stuff we need to budget more time, if we focus more on the role play aspects we get get away with less.

There is an official Star Wars RPG, but I'm honestly not a huge fan of the way it plays. I could adapt another system to the Star Wars setting if we want to go that way (I bet Shadowrun's system would kick ass with some alterations, hmmm). If we want to do something custom, building worlds from the ground up is one of my specialties and something I love to do, so don't worry about it being extra work for me or anything.

My Friday, Saturday, Sunday is generally pretty busy, so it would be quite hard to make it happen on of those days. Very late on Sundays might work as a last resort. Weekday evening or night works best for me. Central Standard Time here.

There was discussion in the chat about table top RPGs and how awesome they are, so I volunteered to run a FYIH tabletop campaign. Several people expressed interest, so lets make this happen. So, first up, the three S's: Setting, System, and Schedule.

Setting:
Where do you want this campaign to take place? The world of Star Wars? Forgotten Realms? Something original? Do you prefer Sci-Fi or Fantasy? A mix or both? Other?

System:
What system do we want to use? D&D 5th? 3.5? Shadowrun? Traveller? Homebrew? I have a fairly robust system I built myself, but it's somewhat complicated. Other?

Schedule:
When are you available? What timezone? How often do we want to meet?

EDIT: Little bit of record keeping. People who are in:

Owen, Star Wars or Original, something beginner friendly, any time (BST)

BDA, Preference Sci-Fi (maybe cyberpunk?), something beginner friendly, not Saturdays (MST)

Herc, Preference Fantasy, beginner but down for whatever, EST evenings
