I have to be honest, I get like that too. Not so much with good reviews, but when people I know tell me specifically I have GOT to see something, after I hear that too many times there's a part of my brain that goes "Fuck you! You're not the boss of me!" It's totally stupid but it's a knee-jerk reaction I can't really do anything about. Then I'll hold off on checking something out until I know the idiot resentment towards it has passed and I can give it a fair shake.

This is, incidentally, why I have yet to watch Community or Dr. Who.

Thank you to Dorkman for saying it better than I...

Though, you really should watch Doctor Who...just sayin' wink

Go see The Raid: Redemption right now!

One of the best fight/action movies I've seen in a long time. My screening had only a half dozen other people or so, but we were all saying "OH SHIT" and "OOOOOOH FUCK that had to hurt!" and laughing our asses off at how ridiculously awesome and brutal it is. Most fun I've had at a theater so far this year.

yikes
Wow...an action movie were the cops are the good guys and have to fight their way through?
It looks absolutely brutal, I agree, but it looks like a fun flick.

This confuses me. Is it just some sort of ingrained urge to rebel against authority or do you just hate finding new things to be interested in?

I'm a confusing person and honestly could not articulate well the reason why. I can trace it back to high school were my friends would be like, "Dude, this CD/movie/video game/whatever is soooo cool! You have to try it!" and I would be, "Maybe." The more they pushed, the more I became more "Whatever" about it. So, I just must need to rebel against something and it is the movie industry, I don't know  hmm
I'll admit I don't like change, but if I discover the movie on my own and enjoy it, then that is fine. I didn't go to see Fellowship of the Ring in theaters and saw Two Towers with absolutely no information on the movie save for passing conversation with a friend. On the other hand, I watched Chronicle of Riddick in the theater and loved it from the opening scene, so my tastes are perhaps off kilter from others.

For me, I can be pretty lenient with a movie when I walk in. I will let it try and sell me on its own merits, and not any trailer hype or other promo material. I don't avoid trailers, but at the same time I put about as much stock in to them as I do As Seen on TV product promos-interesting but ultimately misleading.
I also put just a little more stock in movie reviews, save for one or two. If its a movie I wanted to go see, all the negative reviews in the world will not keep from it. Contrary to that, all the positive reviews about a movie I am not interested in will actually push me further away from a movie.

if you don't want to blow $60 on a game you're not sure about, you can always find someone doing a LP for it either on day one or the next day. ME3 had about a thousand videos on youtube by noon on the first day it was released. Most of them have pretty unintentionally funny commentary by hopeless 14 year old nerds as well.

I've been thinking about doing some for older and/or more obscure PSX and Saturn games, but I hate my voice. People will mock me.

Not that they don't already...

We would never mock you...insult maybe, but never mock wink

I haven't purchased a "new" video game in perhaps 5 years so I honestly can't speak to any of the latest stuff out there.  It definitely helps to have things like metacritic, and other websites for review. However, I rarely put stock in game reviews at the same time-I'm pretty easily entertained on that front. I'm pretty much stick with old stuff, like Halo or Star Wars: Battlefront. I've been meaning to try Starcraft 2 as well smile

@redeaxiver 70-80 US for a game? That's craziness.

As to the topic at hand, I have avoided weighing in as I don't really feel qualified to make an opinion on art. I certainly see plenty of opinions flying about as we are want to do on this forum smile

I will say that aspects of video games can be art, specifically the visual design work, interfacing and sound work. If a game is done right, then the production if often similar to that of a movie, in that you need actors, visual department, and sometimes a story, depending on the game.

But, unlike a movie, a game must be developed for a person to play and engage in, otherwise people rage quit.

Perhaps there should be a category of art called "interactive art," where the art must be built to be engaged by humans and not just in a mental capacity.

1. How do you talk? Fast? Slow? Loud? Quiet?

I tend to talk a little fast and loud.

2. What's your accent?
Western American, like most of the DiF panelists

3. Are you most comfortable playing serious, pissed, wacky, annoyed, funny? If you'd rather do something specific like this, let me know, otherwise you'll just get a part and do your best.

I prefer funny, and have a pretty good sense of humor. I also do deadpan pretty well too.

4. Do you have specific car limitations? Like, no back seat? I have a van and a 4 door. Pretty wide open

5. Problem with profanity? Yes, I don't swear.

Also, 6. Pick a movie you love. Doesn't have to be your favorite, but one that you just freaking love.

Emperor's New Groove, hands down is my favorite movie to quote. I also can mimic many stand up comedy routines as well.

I would like a small part, and can even work in the fact that I am a new dad if you like.

Good grief, is National Treasure the only movie he actually survived?

Who is his agent and what kind of negotiations does the guy do for Bean? I mean, I have heard of having tough roles, but this guy gets some tough death scenes.

^^ Also totally horrifying and possibly the most brutally atheist movie ever made

I loved the first 20 minutes or so until the very first wolf attack after the crash. I kept getting more and more pissed off at it up until the... eating scene. At that point the movie goes from "jump scare every five minutes" to having really suspenseful scenes created by the characters active attempts to escape the wolves. So... First 20 minutes are great, last half hour or 45 mins is great, the middle half hour or 45 mins kept punching me in the face and screaming "I'M A MOVIE LOL!" It was also during this period that the worst couple of wolf effects are shown, and where the wolves suddenly no longer growl like animals and instead sound like someone left their lawnmower idling. I think one of the wolves may have been operating a dump truck somewhere in the darkness as well. The sound design in the middle bit of that movie is really odd.

Not to derail this thread further but I have to agree. "The Grey" is a movie that did not go like I expected it to, and the whole survivor theme felt hollow the more times they ran away from the wolves. Each character, save for Neeson, was fairly unforgettable and almost interchangeable.

I felt the filmmakers were constantly trying to out do each scare, and I felt it was a missed opportunity to actually do a different twist on the whole man vs. wild theme.

I have become the same way with analysis. Its not that I don't want to be entertained-I can be entertained just find by things like "The Grey" and as you said watch it and enjoy it. But I love background information, things that give details and life to the characters, Things like plot holes, and inconsistencies bother me now that I am more analytical.

People who just want to be mindlessly entertained don't get that wanting depth is not film school snobbery-its wanting something to think about after the popcorn is gone and you've gone home.

I am always amazed at the talented artists on this forum. I personally cannot draw worth anything. My attempts have been mostly mash ups of other people's works. I hate being that guy who asks for help for doing photoshop work or rendering, so I just ooh and aww at pretty pictures.

I prefer to write, especially science fiction, especially military scifi. Writing is really my only talent.

The burning Ent in the Two Towers has always been called "Jacko" among my friends.

Personally I liked the Treebeard in the movies. It may be a nostalgia as he was pretty much as I had imagined him when I read the books when I was young.

But to me the best part of John Rhys-Davies Treebeard is his rendition of the burárum speech. Whenever my son is sick or is fighting the brave fight against going to sleep. I take the little guy on my shoulder and do my Treebeard impression. It usually does the trick in less than five minutes. I guess it’s the rhythm and the rumbling of the voice that puts the boy under.

I like John Rhys-Davies as Treebeard too. I recall on one of the behind the scenes things that Treebeard was inspired by CS Lewis deep rumbling lecturing style at Cambridge. I always thought it was funny that Tolkien was inspired by his friend in that way.

Also, interesting note, Tolkien said in one of his letters that the Two Towers also could refer to the White Tower in Minias Tirith were Denethor had a palantir and had a battle of wills against Sauron. That was part of the reason for his despair and depression.

Still working through Return of the King commentary but so far, but it is so far my favorite. The whole scene at Orthanc of Wormtongue and that discussion by the panelists was hilarious.

And last year, in the space of two weeks I lost my grandfather (to Cancer), my cousin (to suicide) and a family friend (again to that fucker Cancer) but a couple of live shows with DiF cheered me up no end and for that, guys, I am grateful smile

Wow, that's some rough stuff. Glad that you were able to make it through with help from some friends in your head wink

I agree that I would like to know who found that review helpful. Apparently talking down to people is a helpful trait. Eh, it would be a waste of space to defend DiF on the DiF forums, so I'll just bring on the anniversary goodness:

You guys rock! You are those crazy friends that I would probably hang out with after someone stole my lunch money...so, your comments and humor often make me laugh and help chores go by better.

I look forward to the new thing!
